A NZ hunter who shot a pheasant for the table found its crop full of 1080 poison

Thanks to the GrafBoys for this video clip which speaks for itself.

For those who are asking how come the bird was still alive? …  a comment from the GrafBoys: “The bird most certainly would have died, if not shot. There is a two hour or more, latent period before the effects of the poison are felt by the victim. Some animals, cold blooded, can take even longer before the poison kicks in. This bird would have been feeding on pellets in a drop area and may have flown across a forestry road where 1080 poison wasn’t laid. Often poisoned blocks are right next to unpoisoned ones.”

And were it pre feed, non poisonous pellets as some are suggesting, then that would change precisely nothing. The same bird and others like it are still going to eat the drop of real poison to come aren’t they? That is the purpose of the pre feed drop. So still the question remains for you … do you want to risk eating a bird that may have consumed 1080? You obviously can make up your own mind about that, however I would not touch any game captured in a 1080’d area, period.

So, in my opinion it goes without saying, if you hunt for your food, you should always check the stomach or crop contents for poison. This is the stark reality now as the authorities appear to be throwing all caution raised by health professionals to the wind. They need to be invoking the precautionary principle:

This principle is expressed in the Rio Declaration, which stipulates that, where there are “threats of serious or irreversible damage, lack of full scientific certainty shall not be used as a reason for postponing cost-effective measures to prevent environmental degradation.”

(Note, ‘cost effective’, corporate speak right there).

At any rate, if there’s any doubt … best to err on the side of caution. Remember the Indian family from Putaruru. They would not test for 1080 (until it was too late) which looks to be standard going by the testimony of the retired NZ Medical Doctor.

Their website is tv-wild.com. Their doco is a very comprehensive overview with the independent science to illustrate the question marks that remain over the use of this poison. Neither do we tolerate trolls. Mainstream would be the place to air your pro-poison thoughts, you already have an accepted platform. This is a venue for sharing the independent science you won’t of course find there.

POSTSCRIPT:

Predictably the damage control trolls have shown up on this post, both FB & in comments here. Many demanding was the bird tested? Time & date please? They don’t of course demand the same of DoC whose own records confirm they kill non target wildlife on an ongoing basis with nary a ripple of discontent from the pro poison people. Whose tracks are also covered by the total reluctance to test for 1080 poisoning (see our suspected 1080 poisoning page). I reiterate this is a warning bell to those who hunt for food. It is clearly becoming very unsafe to do so because of both poisoning and secondary poisoning.

 

The article clearly does not claim that the stomach contents were tested however, if you hunt for food and find similar gut contents that you sincerely believe are clover as one person suggests, then feel free to go ahead and eat. Bon appetit to you. Remember though, if you get sick like the Putaruru family, you likely won’t be tested for 1080 even if the attending doctors think you should. Good luck with that.

Pleading with the emergency operator to “hurry up, hurry up, hurry up,” Shibu Kochummen’s last thought before he collapsed was of a dead dog.

The local hunter who supplied the wild boar to him had said when Kochummen picked up the meat that his dog had died.

“I remember falling down and saying, oh, that hunter told me his dog died. I asked him how and he said it was poison or something. That’s why I thought the food we ate made us sick.”

It was Kochummen’s last thought for three weeks.

He would wake from a coma strapped to his bed at Waikato Hospital.

“I asked what the date was,” he said. “I was in shock at that. I can’t feel like 20 days had passed. It felt like a dream.”

His wife felt the same when she awoke.

“I thought I had only been hospital for one day,” Babu said. “I thought I had better get to work and why am I still here?”

At 3.30am on November 16, Kochummen woke in pain. His wife, Subi Babu, was vomiting and shaking. He started suffering the same symptoms.

Kochummen found strength and called on his mother in the guest room of their Putaruru home. “I said, ‘Are you okay?’ ” he said. “She said no and fell down. I went to call the ambulance.”

All three had eaten a wild pork curry for dinner about six hours before. Their two children, aged seven and one, didn’t eat the dish.

Doctors and friends filled them in on the details of their illness and symptoms. It was sobering to hear. The three had to be lashed to their beds as they were prone to thrashing around. At other times they would laugh uncontrollably like children.

While this was happening, doctors were at a loss trying to determine the cause of the illness.

Clinical notes obtained by family and written by doctors at 9am on November 16 said the patients had encephalopathy, a general term that means brain disease, damage, or malfunction. The possible causes were listed as “1080 poisoning, botulism, typhoid encephalopathy.”

Botulism was thought to be the cause of the illness, as the family seemed to respond to treatment for that, but on December 15 a test of the food for the food-borne illness came back negative. Waikato DHB said tests for 1080 also came back negative.

A working diagnosis of food poisoning meant the three were ineligible for ACC cover. They also faced a huge medical bill for Kochummen’s mother, 62-year-old Alekutty Daniel, a foreign national.

“Because we are both not working and the hospital bills, we cannot afford to pay it in our lives,” Babu said.

“That’s why our lawyer is helping us with our ACC.”

Progress has been made. The Waikato DHB wrote a letter to ACC after a request from the family’s lawyer, after it was determined botulism was no longer considered the cause of the illness. A copy of that letter was given to the familiy’s lawyer at an urgent meeting with acting DHB chief executive Derek Wright.

The letter was written by Dr Liz Phillips, who wrote: “It is my clinical opinion (backed by medical evidence) that they ingested an unspecified neurotoxin with the meal …. I believe this would meet the criteria required by ACC for accidental poisoning and entitle them to cover of medical expenses and access to physiotherapy.”

The couple hope the ACC claim will be accepted, but they said what they want more than that is to know what caused them to become so sick so fast.

“We worry about our children and our future as we don’t know what is going to happen to us,” Babu, 33, said.

“We still get symptoms. If we go for a walk, we feel uncomfortable and it is like our body is doing tremors.

“The muscles become painful for three to five hours afterwards. If I am holding a phone, I can only do that for 10 minutes or my hand will start shaking. It happens whenever I hold something. That’s why we want to know. We can have a plan.”

They do not accept the “unspecified neurotoxin” may remain unknown and that Waikato DHB says there is no evidence of any public health threat.

“If it happened to us, it could happen to others,” Kochummen, 35, said. “We need all testing to be done.”

Family friend Joji Varghese visited the family every day they were in hospital.

“I was at my son’s baptism and we noticed they were not there,” he said. “We made some calls and found out they were in Hamilton hospital.”

Varghese and other members of the stricken family’s church arranged a support network to look after the two children. Their two youngsters have since gone to India to be cared for by extended family.

Varghese also wants to testing done.

“I wonder in New Zealand, who has such strict border patrols to stop things coming in, that we can accept there is just an unknown neurotoxin out there,” he said. “That’s scary, really. We need to know what’s out there.”

Kochummen and Babu have been cleared to travel back to India for a month to recover with family but before they depart they wanted to express their thanks to the New Zealanders who rallied around them at a time of crisis.

“The community was amazing,” Babu said. “We are very thankful to everyone who helped us and our family.”

Poisoning our food is a time worn tactic

Some of my regular readers & correspondents will be aware of my art work being exhibited recently … (having just completed my Bachelor of Maori Visual Arts degree at Putahi a Toi, Massey). For those who are interested I’m posting my work here on the site because it concerns 1080 poison. 

(As good fortune would have it by the way, my two adult children, both artists in their own right,  were also exhibiting at the same time in the Te Manawa Gallery in Palmerston North. The recent feature article from the Manawatu Standard will give you the background to their work also. We were all interviewed as a trio. Unfortunately my daughter’s work is now gone, some of hers is in the newspaper article).

The theme of my work is poison, in particular 1080 & arsenic, which encapsulates the ongoing issues we are facing today … well at least those of us who are concerned about the toxic chemicals that we are involuntarily immersed in daily. These two poisons interweave throughout our history, and are only two of 280-300 active pesticide ingredients registered for use in NZ (read Dr Meriel Watts’ The Poisoning of NZ, p19). The poisoning of our food, our water, our people. The arsenic episode began in the nineteenth century with what was known as the NZ Government’s ‘Sugar & Flour’ policy, where non-selling Māori were targeted with aid in the form of flour mills and other ‘goodies’ to entice them to sell their land. Subsequently the flour became poisoned (as has happened & is documented in other colonized nations) to the extent in the Upper Whanganui River there was a notable decrease in the Māori population.  The poisoning was also discovered & documented by  missionary Rev Richard Taylor in his journals. You can read about it in David Young’s Woven by Water. It is also of course in the oral histories of the River & was spoken about in the Treaty hearings. Tariana Turia (former politician, co-leader of the Māori Party) also wrote about this in the Taranaki Star at the passing of Sir Archie Taiaroa, from the River. Sir Archie had wanted the stories to be made known, saying that Māori were forced to rely on flora and fauna to avoid being poisoned. My great uncle from the Whanganui River died of suspected poisoning. What a damning episode to the record of a so called ‘Christian’ nation. Civilizing so called ‘savages’? It is very clear who were the savages. And so it goes on today with the systematic dropping into our environment, the deadly ecotoxin called 1080.

On this theme I created an assemblage, after the work of indigenous Australian artist Tony Albert, detailing the current poisoning of our waterways and food by the aerial 1080 program operating here in Aotearoa (NZ). In my research on that I have seen testimony of concerned Whanganui people subject to aerial drops who saw incidences of miscarriages & cancer immediately after one. Like the cancer clusters around the cell towers, the authorities of course deny all of this. Dr Peter Scanlon (late) detailed that there have been little if any studies on the effects of 1080 on the unborn. Remember the post about how two midwives advised their pregnant patients to leave town when they heard of an imminent 1080 drop? I would certainly be erring on the side of safety & leaving also were I in their position.

Returning to the assemblage it contains images I’ve used with the permission of the donor* featuring the 2018 hikoi with Emile Leaf & Alan Gurdon. The basic message is … ‘Kāti te paitini haere i ā tātou kai!’ … ‘stop poisoning our food!’ It also features the assimilation drive of the colonists who desired land & and an eventual absorption of Māori into the white race. Well documented if you search … Angela Ballara’s ‘Proud to be White’ is a good start. The newspaper archives she cites speak volumes. Wiping out an ethnic group is technically called genocide however that is well nigh a dirty word in many circles today.

Te Kaupapa Here mō te Parāoa me te Huka | The Flour and Sugar Policy – Artist: Pam Vernon, Te Atihaunui-a-Pāpārangi

Description: Governor Grey’s 1840s policy of aid and education saw the provision of many flour mills in NZ including along the Whanganui River. Matahiwi’s Kawana mill was named after him. David Young records in Woven by Water (p 49-50) the rapid decline in population on the upper river and the alleged systematic poisoning of non-selling hapū there. The government policy therefore became known as the ‘sugar & flour policy’. Land alienation was further fast tracked via The Native Land Court, with depopulation of Māori occurring via land wars, the introduction of muskets and European diseases. Te reo Māori was banned in schools and the assimilation agenda continued into the twentieth century (the Hunn Report,1960).

Part of the assemblage is this Biblical scripture taken from Matthew , translated it means: “…for there is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known” referring to the secret poisoning of Māori who would not sell their lands.

There is another scripture under the visible one (second ‘page’) that quotes Isaiah 26:21, “See, the Lord is coming out of his dwelling to punish the people of the earth for their sins. The earth will disclose the blood shed on it; the earth will conceal its slain no longer.

The image below is also part of the assemblage detailing what a former NZ Premier John Ballance had to say about Māori. He was called a ‘nation builder’.

The work below titled ‘Ekoruhe 20:13 | Exodus 20:13’  is an installation featuring three flour bags. I was told years ago by a kuia in our home town that the flour bags marked for poisoning had a red circle on them. I’ve taken artistic license to add red circles to the bag marked ‘paraoa’ (flour), although I am unsure how the red circle originally looked.

Description: “Kaua e patu” (do not kill), are words from the Bible, the book brought here by the missionaries. Governor Grey’s Flour and Sugar policy was said to be partly an attempt to reduce Māori ‘rebellion’ against land acquisitions, targeting areas where he hoped to acquire land. With the alleged poisoning of Māori, they were forced to use their knowledge of flora and fauna to avoid death. Used globally to this day, the destruction of indigenous food sources on colonial fronts is a time-worn tactic. Currently, another poison is being dropped into our waterways, contaminating both our water & our wild food.

Description: For over 50 years, 1080 poison, a class 1A ecotoxin with no antidote, banned in most countries, has been dropped regularly onto NZ soil, currently at amounts of 4,000 tonnes per annum, enough to kill 60 million people. The Government recently changed legislation so that it can drop 1080 into the waterways without a resource consent, excluding the operation from Resource Management Act protection. A retired NZ Doctor recently warned that if you die from 1080 poisoning, nobody will know because Doctors are bullied by the MOH into not testing for it.

Description: It’s claimed by DoC that 1080, a class 1A ecotoxin targets pests, however, originally an insecticide, 1080 kills all oxygen breathing animals and organisms (Dr M Watts 2010).  A 2002 Otago 1080 drop killed an estimated 10,000 non-target birds. Over 5 years, of 89 dead tagged kiwi in the Tongariro Forest, none were tested for 1080. In 1984 Brodifacoum exterminated Tawhitinui Island’s entire weka population.

The bird image is from a carved kōkako from Te Keepa Te Rangihiwinui’s house, Huriwhenua, at Ranana on the Whanganui River. It’s speculated it may symbolize the raven sent forth from Noah’s ark (David Young, Woven by Water).

Finally is the work titled St Joseph’s Church & Convent at Hiruhārama. Hiruhārama is on the Whanganui River, home of the pictured Catholic mission presence and Sister Aubert.

Description: Patiarero on the Whanganui River was re named Hiruhārama (Jerusalem) by missionary Reverend Richard Taylor in the 1850s, as were many other Whanganui River settlements. In 1892, Suzanne Aubert (known as Mother Mary Joseph) established the congregation of the Sisters of Compassion, a charitable and religious order, where they cared for abandoned children. Their presence is still there today.

I acknowledge all the kaiako at Putahi a Toi Massey & in particular Kura Te Waru Rewiri from whom I’ve learned so much. My learning is a journey that’s still in progress.

And finally, a correction regarding the Standard article. This is a misunderstanding by the writer who assumed I was from Patiarero going presumably from my painting the Hiruhārama image. I whakapapa to the River through my father’s side (see ‘about the author’ at the main menu) … I am unsure which is our marae however. Still researching that. Apologies.

“Twenty years of 1080 in the Haast Valley has killed our kea population”

WHERE HAVE ALL THE KEA GONE?

“On the night of the 30th November [the day of the last 1080 drop] a single kea was heard screaming in the trees behind the township. After that the five kea in Haast township were never seen again. Two years later there are still no kea in Haast Township … twenty years of Compound 1080 in the Haast Valley has killed our kea population … and on the 15th November 2018 the Department of Conservation plan to aerially drop Compound 1080 poison again on Haast……”

 

The photo above is the saddest thing I have seen in years – taken today – a flax bush in full flower and not a single kea to be seen.

 

Back in November 2010 the flax bushes in Haast township were filled with the noise and antics of kea fighting over the sweet nectar. One evening I saw seven kea in one bush. The next photo was taken on the 10th November 2010……..

By April 2016 we had five kea permanently living in the town – this photo below was taken on the 12th April 2016………..

But on the 30th November 2016 the Department of Conservation as part of their Battle for our Birds campaign aerial spread Compound 1080 near Haast township (True Left Haast drop zone)……..

So the flax bush flowers and there is nothing to eat its sweet nectar. Compound 1080 does not increase native bird numbers………… Sixty years of Compound 1080 has not saved New Zealand wildlife…….. twenty years of Compound 1080 in the Haast Valley has killed our kea population………..

 

And on the 15th November 2018 the Department of Conservation plan to aerially drop Compound 1080 poison again on Haast……

 

Why? There is nothing left to kill.

Why aerial 1080 is more than a science debate (Stuff)

This is from Stuff. Surprizingly. Instead of the usual mainstream ‘bona fide justification for poisoning everything and saving our native birds’ (not) it actually acknowledges the information that campaigners for clean water and for refraining from poisoning the entire ecocide have been advocating for decades. Perhaps they’re now getting too loud to ignore.

Damon Rusden has restated the scientific case for continued use of aerial 1080 to control pests, but his argument fails to address the social side of the debate.

Underpinning the continued reliance on aerial 1080 lies the ambitious goal of turning back the clock – of eliminating every single introduced rodent, mustelid and marsupial with the aim of making New Zealand “predator free”. While there is virtually unanimous agreement that our native flora and fauna deserve protection, the feasibility and costs of returning the country to a pre-European state are often overlooked.

In fact, the logic behind being “predator free” requires closer examination. Is this nostalgic vision of returning the country “to what it once was” really what we need and want? Is it possible, and at what cost? If we are going to try to turn back the clock on introduced species, there needs to be consensus on how far back we want to go, and the methods of doing so need to be evaluated in more than just scientific terms.

Taking a big picture view on introduced animals may mean allocating some areas as predator free focus points, while other areas are managed with different outcomes in mind. Introduced species do have their benefits – possums yield fur, for example, and this is a valued resource on many levels. Accepting that possums are part of our national ecosystem and managing them accordingly, might therefore be a better option in some areas.

The ‘where’ and ‘why’ of 1080 also needs careful consideration. Rusden asserts that 1080 is dropped “in areas which are inaccessible by foot”. This might have been true once, but it is far from the truth today. On the West Coast, aerial 1080 is being applied to areas that are easily accessible on foot, with well-established hut and track networks.

The recent Karnbach operation is a case in point, with aerial 1080 placed in the main Waitaha riverbed and on the surrounding tracks. The supposed precision of aerial application resulted in baits submerged in the river itself. This operation, along with many others in the region, was conducted by Ospri as part of the TBFreeNZ program.

These operations have nothing to do with saving native birds or forests. Any benefits to native species are an unintended consequence of protecting the farming industry. The two goals should not be confused, or seen as one and the same.

Rusden goes on to claim that “much of the substance of the anger at 1080 seems to draw from the anti-establishment well”. In fact, there is more than anti-government sentiment at play here. There are sound ethical and animal welfare concerns surrounding 1080 use. What Rusden also fails to mention, is that the majority of aerial 1080 proponents do not live in the areas where it is being dropped.

A lot of the anger and resentment stems from a feeling of absolute powerlessness and lack of meaningful engagement with what is happening in one’s backyard. People who live in a place are often deeply passionate about it in a wholly different way to someone who comes to visit once a year. While the visitor may prize the area for its chortling flocks of tui, the family down the road obtain their water, and possibly their food, from the same block of bush. There is a fundamental difference in perspective. When the helicopters laden with poison buzz over your backyard your water supply, meat safe and recreation ground are all potential targets.

The science may be clear, but it doesn’t take into account the social, cultural or resource value associated with our ecosystems.  For those who live in these areas, the anger at this top-down approach is heartfelt and understandable. Simply writing it off as emotion or anti-government sentiment is not helpful.

Economic consequences are another consideration. The current regime of aerial 1080 drops offers little or no economic return to local communities. It would be heartening if locals were approached ahead of any drop, to identify areas that would be feasible trapping targets. Employment is a real concern in areas such as the West Coast, particularly when many of the traditional industries are being shut down. Local residents should be given the priority when it comes to pest control work.

The debate around 1080 is more than the sum of all scientific papers on the topic. It is as much a social issue as it is a scientific one. There are cultural and economic aspects that need to be considered, alongside the goal of bringing back the birds and restoring the forests.

Many people in New Zealand rely on wild pigs to feed the family.

Between 2012 and 2014, Auckland Council tested wild pigs for brodifacoum (rat poison) poison residues. Of the 14 pigs tested, 13 of them were positive for poison residues.

The Department of Conservation aerially spreads brodifacoum bait across offshore islands to eradicate targeted wildlife. The DoC policy for using the poison on the mainland is however, far more strict. (see below)

Oddly, brodifacoum can be brought over the counter at hardware stores all around New Zealand, and some regional councils dish tonnes of the stuff out to local communities to spread around – like on the Coromandel Peninsula, where there are pigs present.

Perhaps a review of the use of this poison is warranted??? And while they’re at it, put a moratorium on 1080 poison as well …

Best take care in the bush or anywhere near 1080 drops. Your Govt appears reluctant to test for 1080 & threatened prosecution remember of the NZ medical doctor who advised testing before and after 1080 drops. (You really would think the Dept of Health would be praising the good Doc for wanting to look after the health of NZ citizens). You’d also be forgiven for thinking they were hiding something. Protect yourself by educating yourself because the authorities are telling us that although 1080’s deadly to dogs it’s harmless as a packet of crisps to us. Doesn’t really add up does it? And it appears that not only is the quantity of 1080 being increased, but the strength as well. HELICOPTERS DROPPED ENOUGH PURE 1080 POISON FROM THE AIR TO KILL AS MANY AS 60 MILLION PEOPLE IN 2017 – ( 1/100th teaspoon pure 1080 can kill an adult )

In 2015, approx 2 million kgs ( or 2,000 tonnes ) of 1080 poison baits were dropped by the air onto this land of ours. (967,000ha x 2kgs per ha).

In 2016 DoC alone dropped 1080 poison baits over more than 720,000 ha in 2016, but one has to add (unknown) OSPRI /TbFree figures to that, so the area poisoned is probably more like 150,000 ha ( 3,000 tonnes baits ).

As the amount of 1080 poison baits used increases every year, last year it is generally thought that between 4,000 and 5,000 tonnes of 1080 poison baits were dropped from the air.

The percentage of pure 1080 poison in the baits is 0.15%, so If we assume the more “conservative” figure of 4,000 tonnes of 1080 poison dropped from the skies last year, 0.15% of that tonnage contains enough pure 1080 to kill approximately 60 million people, (when ingested at maximum efficiency), and make another 60 million people very sick… just ONE YEAR of poison !
( The LD50 for human beings is 0.7 to 2 mgs per kg bodyweight )

Imagine one twentieth of that amount of pure white 1080 poison powder instead of salt or sugar, ( or 1/100th of a 5 gm teaspoon ), and that is how much pure 1080 poison it can take to kill one 50 kg human being….. or to put it another way, two 1080 poison baits ( and less than one bait for a small child ).

We do this every single year, and the amount keeps increasing, not decreasing.

It has worked on nearly every creature on which they have tested it, including human embryos.” In the wake of these discoveries, a number of CRISPR-based companies have sprung to life with the hopes of furthering gene editing in everything from food and medicine5 to eventually producing “designer babies” that have had unwanted genetic traits edited out.

However, while CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing is more precise in that you can target a specific area of the genome, two recent studies call for a rethink, as the process of gene editing can trigger cancer.6,7 As noted by STAT News8 these findings could be “a potential game-changer for the companies developing CRISPR-based therapies.”

Originally released under the name The Silence of the Pandas in 2012, the book became a German bestseller before being recently published in English following a series of injunctions and court cases, according to The Guardian.

Monsanto, Coca-Cola, Shell, HSBC, Cargill, BP, Alcoa and Maine Harvest have reportedly all benefited from the WWF’s green label while continuing business as usual, said Huismann. While publicly condemning such corporations, behind closed doors the WWF has set up “round tables” of industrialists on hot commodities such as palm oil, timber, sugar, soy, biofuels and cocoa.

An ethnic group residing in the Congo, the Baka people, say they’ve been forced from their ancestral lands in the name of “conservation.”

“WWF is a willing service provider to the giants of the food and energy sectors, supplying industry with a green, progressive image… On the one hand it protects the forest; on the other it helps corporations lay claim to land not previously in their grasp. WWF helps sell the idea of voluntary resettlement to indigenous peoples,” said Huismann.

An elite club consisting of 1,001 of the world’s richest people, including philanthropists, industrialists and upper-class naturalists, are reportedly operating out of the WWF, which was set up more than 50 years ago by Prince Philip and Prince Bernhart of the Netherlands. This elite club serves as an “old boys’ network,” holding “influence in the corridors of global and corporate and policy-making power.”

Aside from being in bed with some of the world’s biggest polluters, the WWF has also been accused of committing crimes against indigenous peoples by funding their “displacement” and “cultural extinction,” contributing to more than 20 million people who are now classified as “conservation refugees.”

This is obviously quite old but worth a re visit. See how things were creeping in so very long ago? This is not that long after Corngate when the esteemed Helen Clarke let the secretly sown GE corn crops in various places throughout NZ be left to grow to harvest. She initially ordered them pulled up but I suspect corporate persuasion made her change her mind. How dishonest and treacherous can you get? Be aware Kiwis as the article says regarding animal feed, three years ago I rang two producers of chicken and pork here in NZ and neither would admit to GM feed for their livestock, however added they ‘couldn’t rule it out’ because the feed wasn’t labeled as GM. Greenpeace today released results that show an Ingham frozen chicken product on sale in New Zealand is contaminated with genetically engineered (GE) soy ingredients (1). Earlier in the year, tests also revealed the Aussie-owned brand uses GE soy in its feed (2).

“Inghams are showing a total disregard for their customers preference – which is for GE-free food,” said Greenpeace campaigner Steve Abel. “Inghams continue to import GE soy meal into New Zealand for use in animal feed – and this latest test shows that Inghams are using GE soy contaminated ingredients in their products too.”

Greenpeace also criticised lax labelling regulations which mean GE feed and many processed ingredients don’t require GE labelling and enter the food chain by stealth.

The environmental organisation is encouraging the public to phone Inghams on 0508 800 785 and express their opposition to GE food. Greenpeace volunteers will be distributing postcards addressed to Inghams and demanding that they remove GE feed and ingredients from the food chain.

“Supermarkets and other users of Inghams products and feed should also demand that the company commit to a GE free policy,” said Abel.

New Zealand’s biggest poultry producer Tegel and their feed subsidiary NRM, shifted to a non-GE feed policy in 2001 following a public campaign by Greenpeace.

“Tegel have set the standard for excluding GE ingredients in animal feed. It’s time for Inghams to clean up their act and stop contaminating New Zealand’s food chain with unwanted GE,” said Abel.

The growing of genetically engineered crops threatens conventional production and the environment and GE foods are insufficiently tested and labelled.

A letter to the editor of the Dominion Post points out quite clearly here that mainstream media is guilty of omitting the blatantly obvious in their reporting… misleading the public perception of the reality of 1080 poison. If you care to examine the research on 1080 (the independent research, not that of those who justify 1080 use) you will find some serious holes with some serious leakage.

New study suggests more than a quarter of scientific papers “spin” results

(Natural News) Headlines about health studies often leave people confused and frustrated, with a study claiming that a certain food is bad for you often contradicted by one that says the opposite just days or months later. When you throw the financial interests of various studies’ sponsors into the mix, it’s no surprise that many people take scientific studies with a huge grain of salt. However, even die-hard study skeptics are likely to believe new research that shows scientific papers regularly spin their results.

After reviewing 35 published academic studies of the phenomenon of “spin” or “science hype” in biomedical scientific papers, researchers from the University of Sydney’s Charles Perkins Centre and Faculty of Pharmacy discovered that more than 26 percent of studies known as meta-analyses or systematic reviews contained spin. When they focused solely on non-randomized trials, the proportion skyrocketed to an alarming 84 percent.

The spin came in many forms throughout the studies in question. Some made inappropriate claims about results that were not statistically significant, while others attributed causality when it was not possible. Studies also used selective reporting, like choosing only to mention certain data in the conclusions, and some made inappropriate recommendations that were not backed up by the study’s results. There were also many instances of studies painting data in a deceivingly positive light, such as by writing abstracts that were overly optimistic, underreporting any adverse events, and describing the study’s design in a way that was misleading.

A lot of this spin was connected to outside influence on the scientists in question, and more research is needed to uncover the extent of this behavior. Study co-author Professor Lisa Bero said: “The contribution of research incentives and reward structures — for example financial and reputational — that rely on ‘positive’ conclusions in order to publish and garner media attention is yet to be addressed.”

Our waterways planet wide are now highly polluted and no longer safe to drink. Consequently, the water that’s fed to us in the town supplies is replete with chlorine, fluoride and other additives to prevent us getting sick. However, there is a long term sickness cost to that. Only 40% of NZ rivers are safe to even swim in now. The Manawatu river is the MOST POLLUTED river in the southern hemisphere. Someone got trench mouth from ingesting that river water. It’s contaminated with spirochetes that cause leptospirosis & lyme disease among other things (all in the article of the last link there). They’ve been polluting our waterways for the past century basically and continue to do so. We can no longer eat what remains of the food in our waterways … the whitebait’s nearly gone, birds are declining, eels are dying. All in the name of profits for the few.

So it’s important to start the conversation on obtaining healthy water to drink. Town supplies are not healthy in the long term. This is a huge subject that’s been widely debated … best to research it & make your own informed decisions before getting sick.

An excellent and informative video where experts (two Medical Doctors & an expert in Rongoa – Maori medicinal plants) are discussing the effects of chemicals, particularly 1080 in our environment and its uptake by plants. As you will see there has been little research to cover many areas of risk. By the Graf Boys this is important information to have. Bearing in mind the authorities are telling us it’s safe as houses, educate yourself and make an informed decision yourself. Gone are the days of believing the official word … that word is now corporately controlled and profits a priority. These three men share some very interesting information. EWR

A video which has encouraged me to keep speaking up about these environmental risks to our health has been that produced by TED talks (they’re on Youtube also) called ‘The Dangers of Willful Blindness’ (the video is on our Home page). Gayla Benefield was just doing her job — until she uncovered an awful secret about her hometown that meant its mortality rate was 80 times higher than anywhere else in the U.S. Worse, when she tried to warn people of her discovery they didn’t want to know! How often we are faced with fact but choose not to believe. We adopt what I call the ‘three monkeys’ approach where it’s assumed, if we neither see, hear nor speak we’re safe … a lot like the ostrich really. But somewhere down the track we run the high risk of it all coming back to bite us on the proverbial rear end!

See here how murky our clean green image is now?  Yet again we are consuming food that is not safe, with neither our knowledge nor our permission? They approved this secretly folks! How can we possibly trust these people who are charged with protecting our food supply? I posted a while back the alert that our stock is being fed GE feed. At least the business operators “couldn’t rule it out the feed wasn’t GE” as it included corn and soy, typically GE products. And the Greens have also made statements about GE feed here in NZ. If GE feed and hormone growth products are so safe why then are they being so underhanded about it all? Not rocket science is it? Vote with your wallet and don’t buy it. There aren’t a lot of options left to us as clearly they’re intent on steam rolling ahead with opening this Pandora’s box. To the peril of the public I might add.

Back in 2002 the Greens announced – “A new growth hormone made by GE bacteria has been secretly approved for use on NZ pigs, and there is no requirement to disclose its use on the label.

This growth hormone makes pigs grow by up to 20% more in the last month of their lives. The hormone Porcine Somatotropin (PST) is injected into the necks of pigs every day, for the last 30 days of their lives. Advice from the manufacturer is to inject pigs in the neck to prevent the meat being downgraded.

The hormone was approved by the Animal Remedies Board on 12 October 2001. A similar hormone for cows, bovine somatotropin, was refused approval by MAF last year because of concerns about European consumers refusing to buy hormone-treated milk and meat.

Australian officials had acknowledged there would likely be residues of the artificial hormone in pork from treated pigs.

As Sue Kedgley, spokesperson for the Green Party commented, this hormone was highly controversial and was not even approved by the FDA for use in America…”

‘Camping’ on Your Own Land is Now Illegal in the US — Waging War Globally on Off-Grid Living

The world is not as it used to be, as many of my own generation are generally concluding. This kind of ruling against off grid living is becoming more commonplace & in spite of the authorities saying they are not trying “to drive people off their properties” … that is not how it is appearing. Looking at the bigger picture and the other anomalies we see … it is becoming a ‘crime’ to give to the homeless, the hungry … a ‘crime’ to even be homeless in spite of the fact the failing economic system has made them that way (witness the tent cities springing up in many places). Rules around collecting rainwater off your roof for heaven’s sakes … the powers that be figure they own the water … witness Nestlé’s claim that water is NOT a fundamental human right (except for themselves & the like who bottle it and sell it for obscene profit, yes even in NZ) … rules around passing your surplus vegetables over the back fence to your neighbours or selling them at the gate … all being increasingly restricted, even in NZ (the Food Bill ... read the fine print plus see where it is headed) ... rules around where you can camp, it’s becoming less possible to simply pull over anywhere in your camper van. Another issue coming to light more and more is the poisoning of our wild food with the indiscriminate slathering of 1080 and other poisons throughout our wilderness places.

Basically our freedoms have been eroded, in very tiny increments, over a very long time. Tiny enough that initially they weren’t so noticeable. (Like the frog in warm water analogy … water that is set to eventually boil & cook its contents). Today, they are flashing at us like neon lights. The illegality of feeding homeless people goes totally against the grain of all that is human and compassionate and is not what people want. It certainly isn’t what Kiwis want.

Time to stand up Kiwis and fight for what is right. Speak up and let the authorities know you are not okay with it. Your silence is taken as consent.

‘Camping’ on Your Own Land is Now Illegal — Govt Waging War on Off-Grid Living

Costilla County, CO — Across the U.S., local zoning officials are making it increasingly difficult for people to go off the grid, in some instances threatening people with jail time for collecting rainwater or not hooking into local utilities.

As zoning laws have increasingly targeted the off-grid lifestyle, many have moved to the Southwestern U.S. as an escape from overzealous zoning officials.

In Costilla County, Colorado, there has been a major influx of off-grid residents to the San Luis Valley. The combination of lax zoning regulations, cheap property, and an already thriving community of self-reliant off-grid homesteaders has led to many new residents.

The off-grid lifestyle, enjoyed by an estimated 800 people, is now being threatened as county officials have recently made moves to essentially regulate and license the lifestyle into oblivion.

Tensions boiled over during a county commissioners’ meeting in San Louis, Colorado, devolving into a shouting match between homesteaders and police. One of the major points of contention is the county’s attempt to ban camping on your own property, in an effort to force the off-grid homesteaders back onto the grid.

What’s in our meat? … and is NZ really GE free?

I purchased pork chops recently, and specifically chose the brand that advertises itself as being humane to its animals. Nice grassed grazing (for their chooks and pigs), outdoor huts with lots of hay. Definitely free range which is refreshing in a world where we’re seeing the steady growth of factory farming. The pigs and chooks looked happy indeed.

Not having done too much homework of late on this front, as in I buy organic when I can but mostly restrict my meat intake … I thought I’d better contact the manager and just check, do they feed their animals non GE food?

Well, the reply confirmed my suspicions and of course confirmed for me, no more pork, or any other meat, that’s not organic. Occasionally I obtain produce … vegetables, fruit and eggs, from growers who don’t use sprays of any kind which is next best to organic and less costly. In the instance of the pork, the manager told me he couldn’t rule out that the pigs weren’t eating GE feed as some of their soya feed is sourced from the US which he acknowledged meant it could quite well be GE. So … they are working on getting alternative feed but as yet … no … no guarantees. To recap here, it is definitely great to see farmers treating their animals well, housing them properly with room to roam and forage … definitely a huge improvement on the crates and tightly enclosed concrete and steel pens that occasionally feature on the news when animal activists expose them. So kudos to this farmer on that aspect. However, the GE food is definitely of concern, and especially if the animal is destined for your plate.

A couple of years ago I read a local book called ‘Seeds of Distrust’ by respected local investigative journalist, Nicky Hager. Our country, good old New Zealand, is touted world wide as being amongst other things ‘clean and green’, ‘pristine’, ‘unspoilt’ (the Rangitikei’s official logo), ‘GE free’ and even ‘nuclear free’ (it helps attract business). Interestingly, as an aside on nuclear free, radiation levels have been recorded at danger levels in the South Island. Fukushima possibly? That is definitely worse than what we’re told and definitely not all sorted by any stretch of the imagination.

Anyway, Hager’s book details the events surrounding the planting of GE sweet corn in several locations here in 2000. When this came to light the current Prime Minister at the time, Helen Clarke, ordered these be pulled up. As is the usual with such events, some discussion went on for a time and eventually it turns out, the corn was not pulled up, but was left to come to full harvest. And our threshold of acceptability for GE content was raised as well. Problem solved as it were. Thanks to big-business lobbying (corporate persuasion) and to Helen Clarke, the GE sweet corn plants were allowed to spread their pollen and were harvested for sale in NZ and overseas. The rest of the contaminated seed batch was also approved for planting and the public not told.  Do you still believe everything the Government tells you?

This has been a good reminder for me, don’t buy supermarket meat, or any meat that isn’t organic. Unless you know who bred and killed it. Otherwise you may likely be ingesting GE food.

I’ve replied again to the company that ‘can’t guarantee’ the pigs don’t eat GE feed, with a link to one of Jeffrey Smith’s videos (included below) about what the GE food does to animals’ livers. The animals are reported to smell highly putrid when slaughtered and their livers are obviously diseased. Which does remind me of the recent furore in the South Island when around 200 cows died after eating swedes that are herbicide tolerant. Predictably the link between swedes and these deaths has been all but wiped off the radar but that’s a topic for another post. Herbicide tolerant by the way, means that the crop can be sprayed with herbicide (as is the case with GE crops that are sprayed with glyphosate) killing the weeds but not the crop. The crop retains residues of the herbicide and of course whoever/whatever eats the crop ingests the herbicide as well. This is why glyphosate is being found in human blood, urine and breast milk, even in people who don’t use glyphosate. It is in our environment.

A disturbing prediction from statistics here. If you are a thinking person, you must do the research and see what has been happening here. Surely in an era of unsurpassed technology and expertise this should not be? Clearly you have an internet connection to be reading this, so research the topic particularly in relation to vaccinations. And keep an open mind. This gloomy prediction was made at a GMO conference in December of 2014 by MIT senior scientist Stephanie Seneff, PhD. Originally a computer and artificial intelligence researcher, Seneff has shifted over the past several years to biology, with a focus on the impact of environmental toxins on our rapidly declining health.

Aluminum toxicity has been an issue with Dr. Senef, so vaccines are part of her equation to autism. But possibly just as much is the pervasive abundance of glyphosate. She and her research partner Anthony Samsel researched the relationship of glyphosate based herbicides (GBH) such as Roundup to the epidemic of many modern diseases, including Celiac, Alzheimer’s and autism.

Glyphosate is present in unusually high quantities in the breast milk of American mothers, way beyond the allowable levels of glyphosate in water. Urine testing shows Americans have ten times the glyphosate accumulation as Europeans.
