
Scientific advice ignored by Westland District Council when it axed fault avoidance zone

The Westland District Council ignored advice from four prominent scientists when it removed the fault avoidance zone from Franz Josef.
The council moved to drop the restrictions, which previously prevented businesses from developing on the Alpine Fault line running through Franz Josef, on Thursday.
However, a letter penned by four scientists – Dr Virginia Toy, Professor Mark Stirling, Dr Caroline Orchiston and Dr Nicolas Barth – offered a stark warning about the effects of the decision.
