UK police forces are increasingly experimenting with controversial new facial recognition (FR) technology for crowd control and locating suspects. Critics, however, have labeled the trials a shambles, pointing to the high error rate and even higher cost of the program.
Documents released underFreedom of Information Act requestshave shown that collectively South Wales Police and London’s Metropolitan Police have spent millions of pounds on trials of the technology, despite the fact that both systems have been shown to have an error rate over 90 per cent.

Lakeland farmers have been told they no longer own the water after rainfall hits the ground on their properties.
Desperate for irrigation water to keep their banana crops alive the State Government delivered a mortal blow preventing farmers from building any more dams over 50 megalitres capacity without applying for an expensive licence.
Mareeba-based Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy officer Patrick Huber broke the devastating news at a meeting of Lakeland farmers recently.
Mr Huber stressed that water caught in domestic rainwater tanks was safe from government hands but any other water belonged to the State.
Releasing the Draft Water Plan for Cape York Peninsula he said overland flow had to be protected and the department would soon require land owners with existing dams, large or small, to supply dam measurements and capacities to the department.
Within 12 months of receiving the information the DNR would then issue a licence for the water and install meters on all private dams to get an idea of water usage.

This is horrible beyond imagination for this family. And it sounds extremely suspicious doesn’t it? This family was paid absolutely no respect in this. Not by the authorities anyway. Remember what retired Doctor Charles Baycroft has told us recently… ‘if you die from 1080 poisoning nobody will know’ because Doctors he said are not allowed to look for it, and they are bullied into not testing. Word has it that the leaves in the area where Whitney walked that day were smeared with 1080 gel, a highly concentrated application.
The NZ authorities do not practice the precautionary principle with the spreading of 1080 poison people. In fact they are now legally allowed to drop it into your waterways without the previously required consents, even though the manufacturer’s warning says take care not to drop it into the waterways. Whilst they continue to claim it is harmless, there is much independent research that says otherwise. (See 1080science for further independent info). In light of that, in my opinion it is safer to follow the precautionary principle, that is, proceed as if there were a possible risk to your health rather than assume there is none. EWR

Rocket Lab staged its eighth successful launch at 12.20am last night from Launch Complex 1 on the Mahia Peninsula.
The “Look Ma No Hands” mission carried the first satellite for a new maritime surveillance constellation for French company Unseenlabs. It will deliver maritime data to help shipping companies monitor their own vessels, as well as threats such as pirates and illegal ships.
The launch also saw satellites deployed for rideshare provider Spaceflight, including the Global-4 satellite for US Earth-observation company BlackSky and two United States Air Force Space Command “technology demonstrators.”
Over the past 12 months, Rocket Lab has launched small satellites into space for four US government clients: NASA, SOCOM (Special Operations Command), DARPA (the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) and repeat customer the US Air Force.
Earlier, founder and chief executive Peter Beck played down Rocket Lab’s military customers, saying defence technologies like GPS where dual-use, and that his company had only launched experimental not operational payloads.
And although Rocket Lab does not make all details of a mission’s manifest public, it does have to disclose all cargo to the NZ Space Agency, with final sign-off by the agency’s minister, David Parker. Both safety and “national interest” tests are applied by the NZSA.
Rocket Lab will announce details of its ninth mission in the coming weeks as it contiunes to build toward its goal of a launch a fortnight.
Beck recently revealed his company is developing reusable rockets.
Rocket Lab has also been putting the final touches on its new launchpad, housed at NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia on the US East Coast.
Beck said earlier this month that it could be one of the fastest launchpad builds ever. It had started driving piles at the beginning of the year and would be ready by year’s end.
The customer would be a US government agency.
Beck said some US government clients preferred Rocket Lab to have a US launch site.
However, the Kiwi-American company is also upgrading and expanding its assembly plant in Auckland and its Launch Complex One on the Mahia Peninsula.
Beck said NZ would remain Rocket Lab’s high-frequency launch location because of our skies and sea lanes – which, compared to the US East Coast – are empty.
His company is currently on a drive to hire another 100 staff, which will take its total complement to around 600 – most of whom are employed in NZ.

Universal Law/sovereign law trumps all others.

Sadly this has happened many a time in NZ and is part of the new corporate scene… certain segments of society no longer matter. The elderly are one of those segments. A society where people are valued on their financial contribution only … where only profits matter … is one that is in severe decline in my opinion. I’ve seen this scenario elsewhere where a gentleman who had gone to hospital in an emergency & had to leave his flat unlocked … the housing management were not too interested. This just wasn’t the norm two and three decades ago. How sad for these elderly folk who died alone when people were genuinely worried for them. EWR

An elderly man lay dead in his council-owned flat for four days before he was discovered.
It is the second case of a resident at a Haumaru Housing-run village dying and not being found for several days.
Iain Halliday, 88, was found dead at Birkdale Court, on Auckland’s North Shore, in late June.
His death came just two days after the body of Bryan McGinty was found at Leabank Court in Manurewa. McGinty had been dead for five days.
In both cases the men had been unwell and concerned neighbours had asked Haumaru Housing staff to check on them. And in both cases the residents said they felt their concerns had been ignored.

The results of several studies suggest that women who work at night — factory workers, doctors, nurses, and police officers, for example — have a higher risk of breast cancer compared to women who work during the day. Other research suggests that women who live in areas with high levels of external light at night (street lights, for example) have a higher risk of breast cancer.
Researchers think that this increase in risk is linked to melatonin levels. Melatonin is a hormone that plays a role in regulating the body’s sleep cycle. Melatonin production peaks at night and is lower during the day when your eyes register light exposure. When women work at night or if they’re exposed to external light at night, their melatonin levels tend to stay low.
