Petition to Ban Carcinogenic Chemical in Rangitikei’s Urban Public Places

TO: THE RANGITIKEI DISTRICT MAYOR ANDY WATSON, AND CEO ROSS MCNEILL

We are calling on the Rangitikei District Mayor Andy Watson, and CEO Ross McNeill, to protect the public’s health by banning the use of the carcinogen glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, within the Rangitikei town limits. We want to see the Community housing grounds and parking areas, street verges, berms and roadsides, public parks and walkways designated chemical free zones.

Why is this important?

Recently glyphosate was classified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a Class 2A carcinogen, meaning, it probably causes cancer.
In 2009 French Professor Séralini’s two year study on glyphosate found it produced large cancerous tumours in rats. Because its effects are cumulative and not immediate (that is they only show up over a long period of time) people generally think it is safe. Dr. Don Huber, an award-winning, international scientist, microbiologist and professor emeritus of plant pathology at Purdue University (US) who has 55+ years experience in research and expertise in the area of plant pathology, says that contrary to the common claim of safety, a large volume of peer-reviewed scientific information clearly demonstrates that Roundup herbicide is chronically toxic to human and animal tissues and leads to cancer, premature death, kidney and liver failure, blood disorders and a host of other diseases.
Glyphosate is many times more toxic than DDT, and there’s also a correlation between Glyphosate use & bee die off.
With our cancer statistics at one in three now and climbing, it is important we protect the public, particularly children, from exposure to this chemical. It is a product most Council contractors use in keeping both urban and rural public areas weed free. There are some Councils however that now use chemical free alternatives, one in particular is hot water and foam. Some of us have already requested of Rangitikei District Council that they consider a chemical free alternative, however they’ve declined, based on their own report that failed to look at the proven cost effectiveness of hot water and foam treatment which is almost equal in cost to chemical spraying.
Our environment has long been subject to frequent spraying of this toxic chemical and France’s highest Court ruled in 2009 that it is not biodegradable as advertised. It has now also been found present in human blood, urine and breast milk. With WHO’s damning conclusions we need to be taking responsibility for protecting our health and making our beautiful district healthy and environmentally friendly for all. The public spraying of this carcinogenic chemical is a violation of our human rights.

Help us make public areas in our Rangitikei towns both glyphosate and chemical free now.

Rangitikei Mail reports on Rangitikei District Council’s Spraying decision

Spraying Decision Dismays

By Caroline Brown

A Marton resident says she is disappointed with the council’s decision to continue using a chemical-based herbicide for weed control.

Pam Vernon claims the council has side-stepped health concerns about the main active ingredient of Roundup – glyphosate – and instead focused on cost.

The Rangitikei District Council voted on March 26 to maintain existing methods of weed control and to formally establish no-spray lists. Residents choosing to be on the no-spray list would be responsible for the upkeep of the land.  The council contracts the spraying of urban areas to Fulton Hogan.

The council requested a report on alternative methods to chemical spraying for weeds after Vernon raised her concerns around the safety of current methods in a presentation at the end of last year.

Non-chemical sprays, pastes, gas burning and hot water treatment were investigated in the report as alternative options for the treatment of weeds. The council report indicated that cost was a prohibitive factor to many alternative methods.

At the meeting Cr Cath Ash questioned the report’s indication that hot water treatments were 15 times more expensive than herbicide and suggested the council contact some providers for quotes. Ash said the council had an obligation to consider alternative methods to chemical spraying in light of research by the University of Canterbury into the risks of glyphosate and the World Health Organisation suggesting glyphosate was a potential carcinogen.

Vernon said she also had issue with the report’s conclusion on the cost of hot water treatment. She said she had contacted a provider and was told that while at the moment it would be about 10 to 15 per cent more expensive by the end of this year it would be cost comparable.

Vernon said she decided to make a presentation to the council last year after ongoing issues with spraying around her property. She said it was good to finally have a formal no-spray register, however she did not think it went far enough.

“I believe the council are not really interested in finding another option.”

Mayor Andy Watson was not available for comment but in a statement endorsed the council’s decision based on the commissioned report.

More on Marton’s leachate saga

Plant performance queried

By Zaryd Wilson

The persistent resource consent compliance failure of the Marton Wastewater Treatment Plant has come under scrutiny.

Representatives from Rangitikei District Council fronted the Horizons Regional Council environment committee yesterday to explain the plant management and decisions made.

The plant’s discharge into the Tutaenui Stream has been failing compliance for at least a decade and is in breach of environmental and reporting conditions.

An independent report last year highlighted leachate, which the plant accepts from Bonny Glen landfill, as the main factor behind significant compliance failure. Without the leachate, the plant would likely meet compliance. RDC has accepted the leachate for a number of years under an informal “handshake” deal in return for payment from landfill operators Midwest Disposals Ltd.

Council representatives acknowledged problems with the MWTP and said they were committed to meeting compliance.

But it is going to cost.

“We regard it as serious and we’re taking our time to get the decisions correct,” Rangitikei Mayor Andy Watson said.

Rangitikei’s infrastructure manager Hamish Waugh said council had improved its data reporting in the past 12 months.

“I acknowledge that it wasn’t up to scratch in the past.”…… read the article HERE

Wanganui Chronicle

Who will pay? Probably not the main polluter in this dance anyway. “…we’re taking our time to get the decisions correct” (emphasis added) …. well that is the truth. And in 2011 ignored attempts by the public via its own community committee to get this whole fiasco out in the open and dealt with.

Monsanto Employee Admits an Entire Department Exists to “Discredit” Scientists …Natural Society

From Natural Society … by Christina Sarich …

This article shows what lengths this company will go to to push its poison on people. Not only do they lie, they pull out all stops to stamp out any opposition. The heat has turned up for them with WHO’s latest announcement that Glyphosate probably causes cancer. And still our environmental protection agencies continue to allow people to slather it everywhere… schools, Councils, farmers, contractors.

“Dare to publish a scientific study against Big Biotech, and Monsanto will defame and discredit you. For the first time, a Monsanto employee admits that there is an entire department within the corporation with the simple task of ‘discrediting’ and ‘debunking’ scientists who speak out against GMOs…”

10 FLOORING FOOD WASTE FACTS

From an interesting UK site called ‘This is Rubbish’ (TiR) ….  TiR is a voluntary group started in 2009 that:

“aims to communicate the preventable scale of food wasted in the UK, through policy research, community and arts led public events.”

They have compiled some fascinating facts and figures. Did you know for instance, that:

1. “It’s estimated that 30 – 50% of food is waste globally. 1

2. 18 – 20 million tones of food is wasted annually in the UK. 2

3. Assuming that in the UK and US 25% of food is wasted, 10% of GHG emissions from these countries come from food that is discarded. 3 ”

(Note: follow links to article for references cited).

I’ve noticed many food outlets will donate their unsold food at the end of the day to charities who quickly pass them on to those folks they know are in need. I recall during the ’90s collecting weekly a car boot load of bread from a local supermarket for that purpose. Another area I lived in (NZ’s beautiful Bay of Plenty) local growers left two large bins of ‘seconds’ from their Kiwifruit harvests free for the taking, which ended up in homes or as stock feed. Brilliant. Then there are the folks I’ve seen recently on FB who have swap stands or free stands near their gardens to dispose of surplus and feed people who are struggling financially … equally as brilliant. If you have a fruit tree that produces more than you can use, consider placing boxes of it at your front gate for passers by to take. Sharing is caring. Your generosity will return to you. I assure you.

April 2015 014

Then closer to home, was my dear Dad who grew an enormous vegetable garden and gave most of it away … serving two purposes … he loved gardening and growing things … and also enjoyed the buzz he got from helping others. Not only did he give the produce away, he also made pickles, relishes, jams and preserves, much of which he also gave away. Having lived through a Depression and a World War he knew the art of survival and making the most what he had. Like many in his era, his shed was chock full of odds and ends to fix stuff with … that was the era that preceded our current ‘throw away’ society. Perhaps this is where the ‘throw-away-the-food’ mentality comes from? Seriously, the fix-it thing is what could drastically cut back the rubbish and recycling problem that is growing into magnanimous proportions … a topic for another post.

I confess I’m guilty of waste at times although I’ve cut that back and am more mindful of using leftovers creatively instead of biffing them. Did you know for instance, you can make apple cider vinegar or apple jelly from apple peels and cores? ? Or that you can make pickle or relish from water melon rinds?

I have a friend who said as a child they had a cook up of all the left overs one night a week. (Only what was edible of course). I guess this may (or may not?) go down well with the creative chefs however … in the bigger picture we who eat well on the planet are actually the minority. This alone causes me to be very thankful for the food I do have, and more mindful of the need to not waste it. And last but not least, to use what I save in all of this, to feed a hungry child elsewhere on the planet. We may one day need the same generosity ourselves. Our current political regime here in NZ is forgetting that fact. Something to think about.

From EWG … are you eating an endocrine disruptor?

This report is from Johanna Congleton, EWG Senior Scientist. EWG if you aren’t aware, is the Environmental Working Group in the US. I’ve featured this essential group on the Food page here and consider it a vital tool in our toolbox for discerning what’s in the products we’re buying and consuming or using on our bodies and in our environments.  I’ve referred previously to their info on endocrine disruptors in tortilla chips. But this article expands on their properties and the potential for harm they carry and provides details regarding the products they feature in:

“Proper endocrine signaling is particularly important during critical windows of development—while in the womb and during childhood and adolescence. Chemicals that disrupt hormone signaling can lead to adverse effects on development, reproduction, and the neurological and immune systems”.

I note several Weight Watcher products contain them for instance. Their Carrot Crème Cake, Chocolate Crème Cake, Golden Sponge Cake, Lemon Creme Cake and their Red Velvet  Creme Cake. Sara Lee is another product that features there amongst many others, but pertinent to NZ these two I have noticed on our shelves. EWG features a dirty dozen guide to food additives, a handy reference tool for you to search all those little unpronounceable or indiscernible additives most of us just pass over. Be aware peoples, one cake or one biscuit may not harm us in the short term, but habitually consuming these products is setting up, in my opinion, a time bomb in your body. Somewhere down the track you may well be paying with your health. The groups charged with protecting our health (in this case the FDA … they have their equivalent in all of our countries) have listed the use of propyl paraben in food as

“Generally Recognized As Safe…  Despite mounting evidence that propyl paraben disrupts the endocrine system, the FDA has failed to take action to eliminate its use in food or reassess its safety” says the EWG.

Processed Foods Similarly Addictive as Illicit Drugs, Another Study Shows

From Natural Society, an expose on how processed foods operate in our bodies. A good reminder to grow or buy organic and preferably prepare our own meals from fresh. Increasingly our foods from supermarkets are empty of nutrition. Like an automobile, our bodies need fuel to operate … nutritious fuel.

“A new study has found what many studies have already concluded – that the junk food plaguing grocery store shelves alters certain parts of your brain responsible for levels of hunger, thirst, and the body’s natural rhythms and cycles. In other words, processed foods and junk foods are addictive…”

Community Gardens are Catching On for Kiwis ….

This article is from the local newspaper, the Rangitikei Mail, courtesy of neighbourly.co.nz

Community gardens are indeed catching on. If you missed it a couple of days ago I featured the Todmorden (UK) ‘experiment’ that revolutionized the town. (Pam Warhurst, How we Can Eat our Landscapes). It’s so inspiring and so worth the watch … & at the Garden page there are articles on the topic if you haven’t time to watch the TED video there (13 mins approx).

Anyway, back to this post which is an article on community gardens in NZ and how they are catching on for people wanting to grow their own food but lacking the space to do it.

The Dangerous Effects of Trans Fats in Pregnancy … From GreenMedInfo

This is from Eleni Roumeliotou at one of my favourite sites … a reminder for vigilant checks of those packaging labels. Those sneaky ingredients that look harmless enough and we pass over … be aware and check the facts.

“Trans fats are known to sabotage heart health since the 90s, yet remain a main ingredient in industrial, processed food. Since nutrition during pregnancy affects the baby´s long-term health and brain development and functions depend on dietary fat intake, we should worry about the impact of trans-fats on the brain of unborn children and the next generation in general…”

New Study from NZ Shows Roundup Herbicide Causes Antibiotic Resistance in Bacteria

From Sustainable Pulse:  “Research lead by a team from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand has found that commonly used herbicides, including the world’s most used herbicide Roundup, can cause bacteria to become resistant to antibiotics….”

An update here on the ongoing Glyphosate research this time from our own laboratories here in NZ … it gets more disturbing by the day. Each piece of research that is damning of the product should be leading all countries to ban it. RDC’s Verdict on Non-Chemical Urban Spraying Option in the Rangitikei

URBAN SPRAYS OPTIONAL

Urban Sprays Optional CD Times

I have written a response to this article, not published at this stage (it may or may not be). You can read it here:

Letter to the Editor re ‘Urban Sprays’, 31st March 2015,

This issue was raised with the RDC 12 months ago citing much research deeming glyphosate a probable carcinogen. The response; ‘unproven extrapolation’. Following discussions with the Mayor at my request, he said if a cost effective alternative were found it would be considered. Seven months later I made a presentation to the RDC citing the research again, requesting opt out from chemical sprays in Rangitikei’s urban public places. Two Cnlrs voted it onto the agenda pending a report by Council. I then forwarded contact details for a company in Ak with a proven system costing 10-15% more than glyphosate (not 15x more) set to match glyphosate by end of year. The contact wasn’t followed up. If you decide to opt out of chemical exposure, be prepared for ridicule and unpleasantness.  When RDC discussed this, the Clr for the proposal, in citing the latest announcements from WHO and Canterbury University, was directed to stick to questions not discussion, whilst seconds later a Clr against the proposal, still question time, was allowed to expound on the safety of glyphosate. For more info & if you’re for a chemical free urban Rangitikei, sign the petition at envirowatchrangitikei.wordpress.com or the Sustainable Rangitikei FB page

Please note, the online petition will not be on the websites until this weekend 11th April.

Please consider signing it if you are at all keen to restrict chemical spraying around town where humans, including our children, are exposed. You will find more information on the spraying of Glyphosate in particular, on the Glyphosate page, a sub page to the Chemicals page. Links to the research are there also. More on how we’re being too clean … and compromising our health

This article is from Mother Earth News. A couple of days ago in the ‘no dig’ garden post I raised the issue of our over cleanliness … and the need for soil microbes for our health … you can read that here if you missed it. Here we have the same principle discussed by a Medical Doctor, Linda White.

“Our immune systems were designed to cope with a germy world. Unless you live on a farm, postindustrial life can be relatively sterile. Theoretically, exposure to microbes and parasitic worms early in life matures the immune system….”

Report Finds Gerber Baby Food Filled With GMOs … Don’t feed this to your baby

Here is some shocking news on baby food and formula. I’m unsure if this brand is sold in NZ however readers from the US will recognize it. A quick search tells me it is sought after by parents outside of the US. A fairly recent report told us NZ baby foods contain 800x more pesticides than those in Europe. Good reason to do some online research before buying. I emphasize online because it tends nowadays to be not 100% reliable to simply ask the companies. Remember the Ribena fiasco? Two fourteen year old High school students discovered in a classroom experiment, the manufacturers, GlaxoSmithKlein had been lying about the Vitamin C content. If you’ve read the information on my website with regard to how corporations operate (see the movie The Corporation on the Corporations page) you will know they are frequently caught lying. Their bottom line is profits not people, health or safety …. a sad reality. Nevertheless the tools are there for us to find out for ourselves. Better still, if you can, grow or buy your own fresh organic food for baby, that is by far the best. You will then know what it contains. Do your homework and protect your precious little ones.

The article is from Natural Society’s website:

todmorden

From Pam Warhust in Todmorden. Here is one of the most amazing videos (13 mins) you’ll ever see if you have a love for transformation (and gardening). Like those TV programs featuring transformation of your home, your garden … anywhere … this ‘experiment’ can revolutionize the whole way townsfolk view gardening and its purpose in their surroundings. Representatives from the Todmorden project were invited to speak in Christchurch following the big 2011 earthquake to inspire their rebuild. Their system if you like, has spread around the world in fact … the TED video featured will show you just where. She and a group of volunteers … ‘we’re only volunteers and it’s just an experiment’ …  sitting around the kitchen table dreamed up this scheme to grow edibles around their town. Skipping all the usual paperwork and permission seeking they just went ahead and ‘did it’ … they grew edibles all over the place …  in front of the Health Center and the Police Station to name two. Amazingly, it all turned into a whole new tourist trade, inspiring growth in local small scale industries. People come from all over the world to see the Todmorden ‘experiment’ …  ‘even’, says Pam, ‘when nothing much is growing’. I’ll be surprized if you don’t just love this video … it is inspirational and magic… watch on the Gardening page where there are also links to articles you can read on Todmorden, or at its source on YouTube. (Note, on the Gardening page it is halfway down the page and entitled … ‘Pam Warhurst: how we can eat our landscapes’). Enjoy.

How to build a no-dig garden … no kidding!

I personally don’t garden any more … well not at the moment anyway … I miss it too. Getting your hands in the soil and growing your own food is so rewarding. I learned that fact many years ago. Gardening is also therapeutic. A nurse once told me research corroborates that it is healing (although I’ve not yet researched it myself). It does make sense and years ago I watched a family member recover from her grief at losing a child by losing herself in a flower garden … which turned out to be a very beautiful garden. There’s an analogy there about burying seeds under the earth only to see them, once watered & subjected to the sun’s warmth, sprout and bring forth new life. This is the miracle of gardening, it is so multi-faceted and the rewards so numerous. To even further support the whole idea, (and I did research this one), there are organisms in the soil that are necessary to our gut. An elderly lady told me not that long ago that we are too ‘clean’ … we need to get dirt under our fingernails. Where once we did just that gardening, these microbes would be easily ingested. Now they’re clean washed away. Check out Dr Mercola’s article on this one:

3 “Dirty” Ways to Recharge Your Gut Health

Jordan Rubin (N.M.D., Ph.D.) is another who can testify to this. As a very young man in 1996 he was suffering from Chrohns disease. He had wasted away to a skeleton and almost died. Eventually, after a long road of trial and error and a lot of expense, Jordan regained his health by supplementing the small amount that he could eat with homeostatic soil organisms. His story is miraculous. He has written best-selling books, one of which is called ‘The Maker’s Diet’.

So, having established hopefully by now, at least some of the benefits of gardening, I’ll return to the original point of this post … I know there are folks who are unable to physically dig the soil but here is the beauty of the little known ‘no-dig’ method. I’ve only seen one person in my circle who has tried this method and did have a go a few years back with some success. Anyway, here is a great site with the ‘how tos’ of the no-dig method if you would like to give it a try.

Popular olive oil brand sued for selling fake product cut with cheap fillers

From Naturalnews.com, “As much as half of all olive oil brands sold in the U.S. are fake” …  another reminder that corporations lie (watch ‘The Corporation’ doco). Another reminder to keep informed and research the facts, especially if you value your health. And a further reminder to buy certified organic …  the closer to home the better. Support your local farmers and growers and know what you are eating. Contribute to their livelihood and keep your local communities going.

I’d read of this concern recently too regarding olive oil … that companies are faking the contents. A topic I’ve yet to look at more closely. Very disturbing.

“GM-Free” Domino’s Caught Selling GMO-Laden Pizzas

From NaturalSociety … all too common now, the lying of corporations to sell their wares. So here Dominoes has been caught LYING. People are waking up to their wiles. A good expose of corporations that explains all is the doco ‘The Corporation’. This will clearly set out for you how and why corporations tell bare faced lies. They have no conscience for one but analytically, it goes deeper. To guard your good health you must research the facts. No longer can we rely on these behemoths to be truthful, and neither can we rely on the mainstream media to report the truth either. The thing with the GM developments, and particularly with GM crops that tolerate lashings of glyphosate, WHO has recently announced glyphosate probably causes cancer (which we did already know from mountains of other research including France’s Professor Seralini’s findings) however it is convenient for governments world wide (aside from some) to ignore the facts. For further information on all of the above visit the Corporations page and the Glyphosate page on this site.

Raw milk gives a child relief and healing from chronic eczema

“Eight months ago, Shaylin Downs struggled to make it to school. Her chronic eczema saw her spend days in a wheelchair, travelling to Taranaki Base Hospital three times a week for treatment, unable to enjoy many of the opportunities her school friends did…”

This little girl spent some days wheelchair bound & up to three days a week getting hospital treatment for her eczema. Any parent knows the agony such a child goes through … the itching … unable to scratch and sleepless nights. Yet after a recommendation to try drinking raw milk she is now able to enjoy a normal life. What a wonderful story.

And there are other stories out there like this one. I know personally of kids who suffer eczema if drinking treated milk, but don’t with raw.

Raw milk can still be obtained in NZ, although in some countries it is banned because of health scares. The need to be super sterilized went to the other end of the spectrum and much of the goodness contained in raw is destroyed. Modern equipment and the production of organic raw however means the product’s quality is stringently controlled. Like any food item, you treat it with respect and heed all the requirements regarding cleanliness and refrigeration. I personally buy organic raw, have done for nearly ten years and I seldom ever drink the treated product now.

Hello Dolly, Farewell Eczema

RJURIF57BSJLISRQA5MYHSAYC4

Stratford Press
By Ilona Hanne

Eight months ago, Shaylin Downs struggled to make it to school. Her chronic eczema saw her spend days in a wheelchair, travelling to Taranaki Base Hospital three times a week for treatment, unable to enjoy many of the opportunities her school friends did.

With her sheets and pyjamas needing soaking off her in the morning, Shaylin’s life was dominated by her illness.

This summer however, Shaylin is looking forward to being able to join in with her friends, and even going to the beach, something that used to be impossible for her with the salt and sand aggravating her skin.

The difference, says Shaylin’s mum Nikki Hall, is down to a change in diet. “Since Shaylin has been drinking Dolly’s Milk every day we have seen such an amazing difference in her skin and it has impacted her whole life.”

Dolly’s Milk is a raw milk business run by Peter and Margaret Dalziel in Stratford, and they say they aren’t surprised by Shaylin’s story.

“We have heard from lots of people that raw milk can make a real difference in conditions such as asthma and eczema, as well as a range of other ailments which is why we suggested Shaylin try introducing it to her diet.”

With the dramatic improvements in Shaylin’s health, she and her family were able to enjoy a family holiday to Auckland for Shaylin’s 11th birthday. The trip was funded by members of the community who worked hard to raise $2085.17 through various events and auctions.

“I just can’t thank people enough, Shaylin’s life has been completely changed over the past year, and it has been really amazing having the community be so supportive of her.” Nikki adds that her church have also been “amazing, they have supported me emotionally throughout this, as it has been so draining, trying to manage Shaylin’s eczema and keep going every day”.

Nikki says that while Shaylin’s eczema still needs careful management, “and we certainly don’t go anywhere without making sure we have plenty of Dolly’s Milk with us”, their entire family life has changed. “I can now look for more regular work. Before I was limited because I was often at home with Shaylin when she was too unwell to go to school.”

Moana Hancock, one of the fundraising co-ordinators, says that they are “so very grateful” to all the businesses who helped by donating goods and services. These include: Nix Dungeon, Romayse Tutus, Eternal Essence, Dolly’s Milk, Verdigris, Studio 88, Institches, Lara Fay Hairdressing, Egmont Beauty, Ink Pot Cafe, Dane Carr Personal Trainer, Bite Me Cakes, Suede Hair by Design, Ann Coles Photography, Ashleigh Tippet Make Up Artistry, TET Stadium Restaurant and Bar, Robertson Eczema Relief and the Stratford Press.

Shaylin herself thanks everyone in the community who have helped her, adding a special thank you to all her friends, “who have stuck by me even when I was in a wheelchair”.

And from another MD on the benefits of raw HERE

Do your own research and make an informed decision. If you opt for raw, you can buy it from the farm gate in many districts throughout NZ. You will need to ask around your area locally. There is now a world wide trend to shut such sources down in favour of processed milk which again, contains little nutrients compared to the raw counterpart. Even organic supermarket milk is heated according to standards so again, the nutrients are diminished. Very sad all around. Our forbears drank milk straight from the cow as did I as a child before it suddenly became a health risk. Interestingly nobody I knew of back then ever got sick or died from drinking raw milk. It was delivered daily, free, to children at school to drink during break, and we purchased it raw from the dairy, baled by the dairy owner into our own billy (or small milk can). That was in the era before we needed recycling. The bottles were washed & refilled. Who had the healthier, more cost effective and (that Agenda 21 word) sustainable system?

Doctors even prescribed it for health. Gone are the days. EWR

These revelations are shocking. Please read, educate yourself and protect yourself & your loved ones…

Having attended RDC’s brief discussion on this yesterday, and heard their total endorsement of this toxic product, and refusal to consider the mounting evidence against it I’m left mystified. Presumably intelligent people, some of whom have university degrees, steadfastly refusing to consider the fact that the World Health Organization just MIGHT be right?

Pepsi Wins Battle to Keep Adding Carcinogen to Your Soda

This is disturbing; from the naturalsociety website:

“Pepsi One and Diet Pepsi drinkers lost a battle against the GMO supporting company, Pepsi Co, recently when a federal judge dismissed a class action lawsuit over the carcinogenic additive, 4-methylimidazole (4-MeI) found within the beverages.

The substance 4-MeI is a byproduct of caramel coloring, and it has been proven to cause cancer in multiple scientific studies. The Coca-Cola Company previously eliminated the chemical from its drinks, while Pepsi Co did not….”

Consider boycotting them.

A Vacant Lot In Wyoming Will Become One Of The World’s First Vertical Farms

From the ZME Science website….by Mihai Andrei

Not something ‘necessary’ at this point in NZ with its wide open spaces, however, inspiring nevertheless for those high rise city dwellers who want to get started growing their own food. It is very do able.

“We’re replacing food that was being grown in Mexico or California and shipped in,” explains Penny. “We feel like the community’s really ready for a project like this. Everybody’s so much more aware of the need to reduce transportation, and people like to know their farmer and where food’s coming from.”

“Indeed, by growing your food directly in the city you save money (and reduce pollution) on transportation; you also save a lot of time and effort too….

If you care about your health … (or …. ‘watch out for the additives’)

Somebody I know locally, as we discussed food and what’s in it these days, handed me an additive list she takes shopping with her so she knows which items to avoid. The list comes from an excellent website I’d not seen before … and one which is closer to home for Kiwis. The site is www.additivealert.com.au

Described there are, of 300 additives in our food, 60 that are particularly questionable, and some pose definite health risks. Some of them are known carcinogens. They advertise a book there called ‘Additive Alert’ by Julie Eady.

“This book is the essential consumers guide to selecting
food that is as risk free as current knowledge will permit. Presenting a well thought out and logical flow of information, it is easy to read and understand. “Additive Alert” makes real healthy food choices simpler for us all.
An absolute must for the health conscious.”
Dr Joanne Samer MB.BS, Post Grad Dip Health Science, Perth WA

Like the EWG site, you can search these & identify the side effects of additives. One for instance is number 102, called Tartrazine, and is linked to hyperactivity, skin rashes, migraines, behavioural problems, thyroid problems and chromosome damage. It has been banned in Norway and Austria.

Check out the website and add it to your favourites if you find it useful. In addition, if you find additives in your favourite products, vote with your wallet, obviously, and don’t buy, but also, consider phoning the makers of these products and ask that they desist from using the additive/s. If they won’t, tell them you won’t buy them. Consider, if every consumer did this, things would change fairly quickly:  Visit  Additive Alert

GMOs, Monsanto’s RoundUp Found in Kellogg’s Froot Loops

Now, we know that most folks think Roundup is so safe you can drink it. A local farmer told me when it was first introduced back in the ’70s it was advertised as being as safe as ‘Sunlight Liquid’ dishwash. If you really think it’s safe, visit the Glyphosate page on this site. It has been linked by independent, peer reviewed research with many illnesses, including cancer & birth defects. Especially, read the research and watch the video from the French team of scientists who tested this product for two years on lab rats (there on the ‘glyphosate’ page). They grew enormous tumours. Monsanto tested their own product on lab rats for just three months. It was given long term approval and here we are more than 3 decades later and it is still be slathered everywhere, and particularly on GE, Roundup read crops. Many farmers use it pre harvest on their wheat. We are ingesting this stuff from many fronts. Educate yourself and spread the word.

Here is the article from the Natural Society website that says Roundup has been found in Froot Loops! No surprizes there … it’s also been found in human breast milk. It has to stop… read article on Fruit Loops, other cereals and GE foods.

Presentation to Rangitikei District Council Re Chemical Spraying in Public Places

On November 27th I presented to the Council Forum information (including credible research) regarding the need for some parameters around the spraying of chemical sprays in public places. Click on the documents to read:

Of the twelve Councilors, two are interested in this issue. Clearly convincing people of the authenticity of the independent research is a hard sell. People will either not look at the research or they just don’t believe it … even the long term research of Scientists, Doctors and Professors in their respective fields … unmoved by the obvious conflict of interest that exists in Monsanto testing their own product. The product is not safe. Please read the expanded information on Professor Seralini’s two year long experiment on rats on the Glyphosate page.    Monsanto tested their product prior to release for the required 90 days. Further to this, the following information offered by Dr Meriel Watts from Auckland (see PANANZ website & also link at the end) highlights quite explicitly the problem with the initial approval of glyphosate and Roundup. It follows a govt submission she has recently made regarding very high pesticide levels found in NZ’s baby food (800 times higher than the EU’s). She states that the testing of pesticide levels including Glyphosate, are industry funded, and therefore subject to a conflict of interests. I cite that info here:

1) No critical study in these vital toxicity assessment areas, that form the parameters used to approve our daily consumption, our RfDs / ADI’s, are ever supplied by an independent organisation like, say a university or public interest group.

2) Every animal study for glyphosate (the pesticide commonly known as Roundup) that the USA EPA and the WHO use to apply the ‘non-carcinogenic to humans’ rating, is sponsored and paid for by an agrichemical company.

3) The toxicity studies for glyphosate (Roundup) are all private, obtained directly from contracted laboratories that only work with industry – Product Safety Laboratories, Dow, ABC and Covance. They are unpublished and unavailable for review by public sector health representatives or individuals.

4) The very studies that provide the parameters that end up being residue levels, within toxicity assessment, are only ever supplied by the very organisations that require the toxicity assessment to be declared safe.  In the case of glyphosate, the studies for proving non-carcinogenicity are only ever provided by Syngenta, Monsanto and Cheminova.

5) Furthermore, no study ever uses the stronger, more effective complete formulation of Roundup, (only the weaker active chemical glyphosate is used).   And I believe this ‘policy’ has profound ramifications for our health.

This is precisely why the lack of parameters around spraying Glyphosate and any other chemical sprays concerns me.

A book by Dr Watts on pesticides and the vulnerability of children is now in our local Marton library or can be found on the pananz website. The title is ‘Poisoning our Future: Children and Pesticides’  http://www.panap.net/sites/default/files/Poisoning-Our-Future-Children-and-Pesticides.pdf

The Real Reason Wheat is Toxic (it’s not the gluten)

Here is an article that traces many allergic issues back to glyphosate that is sprayed on wheat crops before harvest. A regular practice apparently that kills the plant and allows an earlier harvest. Great idea if you don’t mind ingesting a herbicide that’s been linked with many diseases including birth defects and cancer.

According to the US Department of Agriculture, as of 2012, 99% of durum wheat, 97% of spring wheat, and 61% of winter wheat has been treated with herbicides. This is an increase from 88% for durum wheat, 91% for spring wheat and 47% for winter wheat since 1998.

Roundup linked to birth defects

New Study Shows Direct Link Between Monsanto’s Glyphosate And Birth Defects

By: Tammy Marie Rose

“Monsanto’s herbicide Roundup, which contains glyphosate was linked to fatal kidney disease back in the spring.  In parts of Central America after an epidemic of fatal kidney disease Roundup was banned in El Salvador and Sri Lanka.

Now new study shows a strong link between glyphosate fetal deaths and birth defects.  Monsanto continues to stand by its product calling it a ‘safe and effective herbicide,’ but as the evidence mounts it is becoming abundantly clear that Monsanto is doing all that it can to keep the public in the dark….”
