On the 10th of November three members of a Putaruru family were struck down with violent food poisoning. Within hours they were comatose. Five weeks later, two close friends who supported the family members, told their story to Steve and Clyde Graf, who work with TV Wild. In the fascinating interview, Joji Varghese describes how up to four nurses were required to restrain the victims, because their involuntary convulsions were likely to harm the patients and the nurses. They had to be strapped to their beds, while the effects lasted for one and a half weeks. Symptoms indicated early on that this was not likely to be botulism poisoning. Mystery also surrounds the pot of curry pork found in pristine condition, five weeks after returning to their home that was meant to have been “decontaminated”….

Pesticides Linked to Declining Bee Populations Also Threaten Birds and Small Mammals

From organicconsumers.org

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has determined that popular pesticides linked to declining bee populations also pose a threat to birds and, in some cases, small mammals and insects.

The EPA released preliminary scientific assessments of four chemicals from the neonicotinoid or “neonic” class of insecticides on Friday as part of an ongoing review that environmentalists and farmers are watching closely. Previous EPA assessments echoed research showing that neonics can harm the bees we rely on to pollinate crops when sprayed on cotton and certain fruits and vegetables.

“The EPA’s assessments confirm neonicotinoid pesticides are extremely harmful to birds and aquatic life at the very center of our ecosystems,” said Lori Ann Burd, director of the Center for Biological Diversity’s environmental health program, in a statement.

Environmentalists blame all four of the neonic pesticides under review at the EPA — clothianidin, thiamethoxam, dinotefuran and imidacloprid — for declining populations of honey bees, butterflies and other pollinators, including several endangered species. Of the four, imidacloprid is probably the most widely used and controversial.

In their most recent assessment, EPA scientists determined that imidacloprid poses an “acute risk” to birds when sprayed on crops. Birds, small mammals and insects could also be harmed if they eat crop seeds treated with the pesticide.

The findings echo a report published earlier this year that found imidacloprid and the controversial organophosphate pesticide chlorpyrifos can impair songbirds’ ability to find their way while migrating. Environmentalists are also concerned that the chemical may pose health risks to humans, including cancer and increased rates of autism in young children.

In 2016, the EPA also found that imidacloprid “potentially poses risk to [bee] hives when the pesticide comes in contact with certain crops that attract pollinators,” according to a preliminary assessment released at the time.

1080 threat suspects shocked to discover their house was bugged

From the Nelson Mail

A Golden Bay couple suing police for being wrongly targeted in a 1080 blackmail investigation have been shocked to discover their home was bugged.

Rolf and Ute Kleine, who run teahouse and bakery Takaka Infusion, obtained police documents through their lawyer in November that reveal their house was bugged with a surveillance device 20 days prior to a police search of their home in 2015.

The Kleines have lodged a statement of claim with the Nelson High Court and are suing police next year.

They say both searches and their warrant applications were unlawful and illegal, and they had been inaccurately profiled by police seeking those responsible for a threat to Fonterra to put 1080 pesticide into baby milk formula.

In one of the police documents the couple obtained, Senior Sergeant Aaron Pascoe wrote that “very little” conversation could be picked up through the surveillance device planted in their home.

“I believe that the lack of evidence to date from the Surveillance Device warrant is either due to the poor quality…, or an indication that Rolf Kleine has acted alone (so he has not spoken to his wife about what he has done), or both,” he wrote.

Rolf Kleine said the whole thing “keeps getting worse and worse”.

“Police didn’t find anything, not even a little bit against us, and they just kept going and kept going with no evidence at all,” he said.

Ute Kleine said the couple used to joke that police might have bugged their home, but when it was revealed they really had, they were left reeling again.

“It’s different if it’s your phone than if it’s really your private room, and they can listen to everything you say and do,” she said.

“When I am at home, sometimes I have this feeling, ‘is there somebody listening to me?’ It’s not a good feeling at all. Other times I wonder how many times did they actually enter our house; it must have been at least three times.”

Update from a Neuroscientist on the Waikato family poisoned by wild boar meat .. the anomalies surrounding the official diagnosis

ARTICLE BY Serena Maja* and Michelle Read

“Rehabilitation from sub lethal 1080 poisoning is simple. Time.
Botulism treatment takes a long time, years. Whereas recovery from sub lethal 1080 poisoning is much faster.
This family could have been treated for alzheimers, for mumps, for shellfish poisoning, for botulism, for polio, for meningitis. The results would be the same, they would recover.
The timeline of the recovery is just as diagnostic as the timeline of the illness, and the time line does NOT fit botulism” … Serena Maja, Neuroscientist

The family is facing a massive medical bill after they were made ill following a meal of wild boar.

Officials are still to confirm botulism, but it is the ‘only thing’ they are testing for. And now the report says ‘confirmation will take months’.

ACC has told them they don’t ‘qualify’ for compensation and botulism is not covered by ACC.

We are not making the statement that this is poisoning from pest control operations, but at the same time we find it interesting that the authorities are determined that they have a case of botulism and do not look elsewhere.

The International Society for Infectious Diseases asked on the 18th November for clarification because this is unlikely to be botulism. A number of medical professionals have contacted us within NZ and stated that this family cannot have contracted botulism because of the timing of the onset of symptoms, the symptom of loss of consciousness, and the fact that botulism is not contracted from fresh meat.

However, this family did not receive a lethal dose of poison.

Pig sensitivity to 1080, for example, is estimated at between 0.4mg/kg and 1mg/kg.

Animals rapidly evolve resistance to 1080, and we have used 1080 poison for more than 60 years.

Exposure to sub lethal 1080 doses can lead to protection against 10x the normal LD50.

Therefore, these boar (and we have no real data on boar) may be able to tolerate 4mg/kg and 10mg/kg minimum, before half of them fall over and die.

Human susceptibility is not known. Estimates are between 1mg/kg and 4mg/kg, although we do know that genetic variations in the human glutathione transferase enzyme change sensitivity, i.e. different halotypes/races of humans will experience variations on that sensitivity.

It is not unlikely that the family ate a significant non-lethal dose of fluoroacetate and fluorocitrate (the lethal metabolite of 1080) from poisoned pork.

The onset time of 1080 poisoning is 30 minutes, the symptoms are identical.

Botulism and Botox (botulinum toxin) poisoning do not fit the symptoms at all, either dynamically or by effect.

Tutin poisoning does not fit the observed toxicological profile either.

Why is 1080 not being considered as the primary likely cause? Are we putting our fingers in our ears and refusing to look?

We are dropping ever increasing amounts of the stuff. Two pellets will kill a child. This kind of sub-lethal secondary poisoning is an ever increasing likelihood. We’ve observed it in raptors catching sub-lethally poisoned mammals already.

The test for 1080 poisoning (and fluorocitrate poisoning, 1080 being the delivery mechanism for fluorocitrate) is simple, yet our government insists it is not. NMR spectroscopy is used worldwide to observe either the fluoridated molecules directly, or to assay the metabolic by-products of fluorocitrate poisoning.

Given the amount of 1080 used in NZ, we should have test facilities in every major population centre.

The fact we do not speaks volumes.

“One of the most detailed descriptions of recovery from 1080 poisoning is McTaggart’s (1970) report of a child who ingested rabbit bait: Ten days after ingesting 1080, the boy began to recover during hospitalisation. He was able to keep his eyes open, and to appreciate some movement, but had marked hypertonicity of all limbs with frequent spasms of his arms and legs. At this time he was incapable of spontaneous movement, and remained unable to feed himself for a full two weeks after regaining consciousness. Twenty-four days after he ingested 1080, the boy had regained some range of movement in his arms and was able to recognise familiar people and objects. Ten years later there was evidence of mental retardation with a verbal IQ of 65, he was still unable to walk without crutches, and suffered from tetraplegia, hypertonicity of all limbs, cogwheel rigidity of the wrists, moderate to severe cortical blindness, divergent squint, and epilepsy. It is likely that the mental retardation was the result of brain damage caused by anoxia during periods of fitting (Pridmore 1978), although there is evidence of brain damage resulting directly from fluoroacetate poisoning (Trabes et al 1983). Other patients have experienced a similar prolonged recovery period (5–6 days) (Gajdusek & Luther 1950; Robinson et al 2002) with complete eventual recovery. Pneumonia is a frequent complication of human 1080 poisoning cases (Williams 1948; Brockman et al 1955; Pridmore 1978; Ramirez 1986). While these infec- tions may reflect hospital intervention, it is also possible that infection is promoted because of the increased respi- ratory secretions typical of 1080 exposure (Chenoweth & Gilman 1946; Quin & Clark 1947; Brockman et al 1955; McIlroy 1981, 1982a, 1983, 1984, 1985).”

We are suggesting the cause could be 1080 as the time frame of the symptoms, the symptoms themselves, the time frame of the recovery and the symptoms of the recovery match 1080 poisoning. Doctors didn’t diagnose botulinum toxin, they thought that it might be, and treated as if it was. As yet, the results for the tests which would confirm botulism have not come back, and without those tests, the unusual time frame, unusual symptoms, unusual time of recovery and unusual recovery symptoms, botulism is unlikely. Recovery from non-lethal 1080 poisoning is time – (I’ve quoted the 10 year old boy case which is a perfect exemplar). They could have had limb massage, prayer circles or irrelevant anti-toxin for botox and they would still have recovered in the same way as observed recovery from non-lethal 1080 is normal, it is only if they had had a lethal dose that they wouldn’t have recovered.

As I sometimes add to controversial posts, part of the purpose of this site is to expose lies and corruption and to publish truth that mainstream media will not. If you happen to be pro any topic posted here, there is little point trying to spark up a debate in the attempt to convince myself or others of your view point. I suggest you head to mainstream media where you will find like minds & your posts will almost certainly be published. It also goes without saying, abusive commenters are blocked instantly. The Neuroscientist cited in this particular post wishes to remain anonymous so has used a pseudonym. This is obviously why you will not find the name in a google search however I can assure you that Neuroscientist Serena Maja is real and is a Cambridge Masters. The wish for anonymity is not unusual, and people do contact me from time to time stating the same … for obvious reasons. Recent history has proven that speaking the truth or challenging the status quo these days can incur very unpleasant repercussions. You can accept or reject the information offered in this article as you wish. Nobody is saying it was 1080 that poisoned the family, we are asking the question everybody should be, why is 1080 not being tested for when clearly no firm diagnosis has yet been reached? I have added one response by Serena who I’ve made aware of some of the questions that have come in. And on that note, the questioners clearly have not read the article properly as most of the queries are answered in the article itself anyway.  EnvirowatchRangitikei

Animal Carcasses and 1080 Poison Baits Contaminate Waterways – District Health Board Responds Clyde Graf

From Tasmanian Times
he Graf Boys – Clyde & Steve Graf

Rural families all across New Zealand are being exposed to 1080 poison, and increased risks of bacteria from decomposing animal carcasses, in their drinking water. In August, two councillors from Waikato Regional Council presented concerns to the Waikato District Health Board’s Medical Officers of Health, after many community members were unwittingly drawing water that had 1080 poison bait dropped directly into it. The Department of Conservation, one of the government agencies that undertake aerial 1080 poisoning operations, failed to appropriately inform the local residents.

A video covering several different incidents includes testimony from a Hawkes Bay family explaining how they were exposed to the poison while walking through a local forest. When they visited their hospital they were informed there wasn’t much that could be done, as there was no test immediately available for 1080 poisoning.

When aerial operations are undertaken, poison bait is dropped directly into streams within the operational areas. Landcare Research states in their water testing protocol that “water samples taken within 8 hours of bait application are expected to provide the greatest likelihood of detecting any residual 1080.” One of the conditions set by the Medical Officer of Health is that the poison operator provide mitigation if it’s requested by household occupiers or managers of huts/camping grounds, until any water contamination is proved clear via water testing.

Unbelievably, the victim of an unprovoked assault (two reliable eye witnesses) who was concerned about 1080 storage in a CBD has been charged with assault!

Folk will recall the recent incident at Whitianga with the unloading of 1080 by DoC in the CBD, totally against the rules of storage of poisons. And Graeme Sturgeon who went to the public location and was assaulted whilst still in his car, with two reliable eye witnesses to the attack. If you visit the article you will see the eye witness statements made to the Police. Including Graeme’s. Here we have an update from Carol Sawyer on the unfolding events… (see petition at the link for enquiry into storage of 1080). Strange isn’t it, the vagaries of NZ law and justice? This will be most interesting to watch… read Carol’s update on events. EnvirowatchRangitikei

UNBELIEVABLE !!!! ASSAULT VICTIM GRAEME STURGEON CHARGED WITH ASSAULTING A DEPT OF CONSERVATION SECURITY GUARD !

Well it was the other way round according to witnesses to the event, (retired Victoria University Senior Lecturer Dr. Wendy Pond and local artist Diana Halstead) and also Graeme himself.

Graeme was assaulted while still in his vehicle and had a bloodied nose and torn clothing to show for it. All these people are in their seventies and do NOT deserve this kind of treatment just because they oppose the aerial deluging of a World Health Organisation, Class 1A, EcoToxin onto their land and particularly onto their “home patch” and precious waterways! But…. the best form of defense is attack and we have seen this all before from DoC, haven’t we?!

Graeme said to me today that he “ABSOLUTELY REFUTES ALL ALLEGATIONS, and will be defending the charge against himself vigorously”. He has employed a criminal lawyer to defend him. He will be appearing in Thames Court on 30 November and will be pleading NotGuilty.

(I foresee a fundraising campaign, fellow anti-1080 people. DoC has large pockets, supplied by all of us. Graeme does not !)

The NZ Police are laying the charge, though it has taken a month for them to do this. I suspect it has been ‘up to the top and back again’ and has little if anything to do with the local constabulary.

Graeme is charged with assaulting a DoC security guard in the Liquor King carpark, Whitianga, where 20 tonnes of 1080 poison (stored there in secret for the previous 6 weeks) was being loaded in the dark, again in secret, in a public carpark, on the evening of October 17th, 2017. This was to enable a 1080 poison drop in the area the next day. The poison was being stored in Whitianga’s CBD, adjacent to residential homes and supermarkets, without appropriate signage, with unprotected loading staff (not even face masks or gloves!), all unknown to the building’s other tenants and, incidentally, unknown to the fire department too, locals tell me. It was, frankly, one of the most blatantly “up yours” efforts by the Dept of Conservation to date!

Many of you will be familiar with the events of that night, as I and others reported them in great detail at the time, and it happened only one month ago. However I have attached this latest information to one of my original posts to refresh memory, and I have added Graeme’s comment from that night too.

Graeme will appear in Thames Court on November 30, 2017. I do so hope many are there to support him. Please add this important date to your calendar, Coromandel people – and anyone else who is prepared to make the trip ! Bring your banners!!!

A New form of Botulism or something more deadly? (the case of the poisoned Waikato family)

Tuesday 21 November 2017, 2:15PM
By J. James

“…in the process of elimination the doctors think it is definitely some sort of poisoning within the boar itself so maybe the boar has consumed poison before it was shot down and so whatever was in its blood has found itself in to theirs ….”

With the recent case of poisoned pig meat causing serious health affects in three members of one New Zealand family the world is watching and asking are we seeing a new form of botulism?

PubMed ProMED – is the International society for Infectious diseases and has this to say  -(find it at the bottom of the page)

”…In summary, if this is proven to be due to botulism, by identification of the toxin in either the patients and/or in the food, the description of the time of onset of the symptoms would make this reportable as 15-30 mins post ingestion is highly unusual…”…

In short they are questioning if this is indeed botulism given the symptoms or even a new strain.

However, they do not know New Zealand’s history of dropping a deadly poison into its eco system a poison so deadly there is no antidote – a poison that kills anything that breaths oxygen and that can be up taken by both plants and animals in sub lethal doses.

sodium fluoroacetate better known in New Zealand as compound 1080 is  indiscriminately aerially dropped out of helicopters throughout New Zealand’s pristine eco system and water ways.

interestingly in a Radio NZ interview – family friend and church member Joji Varghese, had this to say

..“…in the process of elimination the doctors think it is definitely some sort of poisoning within the boar itself so maybe the boar has consumed poison before it was shot down and so whatever was in its blood has found itself in to theirs ….”

He goes on to say that without a proper toxicology report no one can be sure and that the toxicology report is expected shortly

Social media is abuzz with theories – I am not saying here that it is sodium fluoroacetate but it is certainly something to look at because of its ubiquitous presence within the entire eco system of New Zealand

It serves no one to obscure all possibilities because one might upset a million dollar industry.

It is not uncommon nor is it unknown as this study shows

Sodium fluoroacetate residue in feral pig (Sus scrofa) carcasses – Is it a significant secondary poisoning hazard?

...”….Feral pig control in Australia is heavily reliant upon poisoning with sodium fluoroacetate (1080) bait. Tissue residue levels may be considerable and pose a potential risk to non-target consumers. Tissue/fluid samples (liver, kidney, stomach, stomach contents, small intestine, large intestine, muscle and eye) from lethally poisoned feral pigs were removed and assayed for fluoroacetate concentration. The digestive system, specifically the stomach contents and stomach, consistently contained the greatest concentration of 1080 within individuals. Few non-target animals apart from introduced mammals (fox, dog, cat) appear at risk from consuming muscle tissue, however, many native species may be at risk from consuming visceral tissue (especially stomach and contents). The practical risk is probably low and reduced given the rapid decomposition of carcasses in the field. Regular consumption of poisoned pork may exceed the recommended daily intake of fluoroacetate and be a risk to human health, but there is a low probability of this occurring…”..

Pigs can also eat deer or possums that have been killed by compound 1080 and gain a sub lethal dose from that

Research is showing that one of the fingerprints to look for is fluorocitrate

What I am learning through others in the Stop the drops movement is that Sodium Fluoracetate metabolises into FluoroCITRATE or is a metabolite of compound 1080.

…”….It has been known for many years that fluoroacetate and fluorocitrate when metabolized are highly toxic….”…

We know that – 1 part per trillion in water can disrupt hormones  and be uptaken by plants

In a separate study – a vet is calling for an investigation into a toxin in wild pigs that affects dogs and might also make humans sick. – which begs the question – might this also be connected with compound 1080 being up taken by plants and eaten by pigs

compound 1080 is an indiscriminate killer with no antidote with potentially harmful and life threating sub lethal does –

There is very limiting independent study done on what it is actually doing in the environment as this report shows

See the unloading of 1080 just meters from housing, defying all the rules

This is what i stumbled upon on Tuesday 17th of October 2017. Around 20 tonne of the deadly eco-toxin 1080 (Sodium Flouroacetate) being handled and loaded onto trucks by workers contracted by the Department of Conservation. As you can see, i was able to proceed into the heart of the operation unhindered, as there were no warning or hazard signs present. This took place on a public through road and parking area close to retail stores. The fence you can see behind the trucks is the back fence of about 3 or 4 residential properties. No public safety measures were taken to inform the public of what was happening. Shame on you D.O.C!!!!!! Video is my own. Song is my own. Three people hospitalized in the Waikato, New Zealand, after eating wild boar may suffer permanent damage as a result.

The family are being treated for suspected food poisoning at Waikato Hospital after consuming the meat, believed to be contaminated by an unknown substance or bacteria.

Shibu Kochummen, wife Subi Babu and mother Alekutty Daniel were found unconscious by emergency staff at their Putaruru house on Friday.

Mr Kochummen collapsed while calling emergency services for medical help.

Family friend Joji Varghese told Newshub poisoning may have occurred after the victims ate contaminated pig.

“Shibu and some of his friends… went hunting for some wild boar,” he said.

“They cooked and consumed it on Friday evening for dinner. Within half an hour they began throwing up. Shibu tried ringing the emergency services.

“Someone turned up at their door and found all three adults unconscious.”

Mr Varghese says the trio are now in a vegetative state, and doctors are determining the cause of the incident.

“They have been diagnosed with food poisoning after having consumed contaminated wild boar,” Mr Varghese said on Facebook.

“The nature of contamination is yet to be determined. Doctors are puzzled by the severity of the condition, as such a potent contaminant has not been reported in NZ since 1983.”

He says the effects of the contamination may lead to irreversible damage.

“We do not know what was in that boar. The tests – the toxicology reports – still have not come out,” he says.

“Currently all three are conscious but they’re not aware of their surroundings. They spasm often, so they’re moving involuntarily. There’s no response to proper stimulus. Doctors fear it will lead to some form of permanent disability.”

He’s calling for aid from New Zealanders to help the family, who have two children and face a difficult recovery.

“I have had detailed conversations with the doctors treating them and they fear the worst,” he wrote on Facebook. “They reckon it will take up to two months for the poison to be washed out of their body.

“Only then can they start to recover. Even if they recover consciousness, they may suffer permanent damage to their bodies, such as partial or total paralysis or tremors.

“There will be muscle wastage, which will require intensive physiotherapy. All of this could take up to six months or more.

“Their road to recovery is a long and rocky one.”

The Waikato DHB says Mr Kochummen and Ms Daniel are stable in a ward, while Ms Babu is in a serious condition in a high dependency unit.

“We are still investigating potential sources for the illness in this case, of which wild pork meat is one,” says Waikato DHB medical officer of health Dr Richard Vipond.

“We do not have any evidence to determine any broader contaminated game meat or that there is a risk to public health.”

A detailed toxicology report is expected on Friday.

With growing cracks in the 1080 edifice the censorship scramble is ramping up

The outrage is growing as the glaring cracks in our ‘clean green’ image get too big to disguise!

Last week my site some may recall was hacked & a piece on the Green Party’s 1080 stance DELETED which was not clever as it merely moves the formerly conspiratorial belief in the existence of a ‘thought Police’ (for some) to, well … factual evidence doesn’t it? Not only was it removed from this site, it had just previously been taken down off Facebook. Please ask yourself ‘why?’

So the cracks are widening ever so gradually & like the proverbial dam stoppage the establishment are dashing hither and yon running out of proverbial fingers to stop up the leaks. I’ve said this before, this site gets literally thousands of views & shares on 1080, hundreds on other pressing issues and some only tens. The 1080 poison issue is by far the one that Kiwis are most angry about.  And the issue that clearly is also policed by trolls who endeavour periodically to convince me that 1080 is harmless stuff you’ll find in your morning cuppa, after all it is derived from camellia leaves they tell me. As if we have never read a piece of scientific data in our lives. I’ve also said before I don’t entertain or invite long convoluted time wasting-discussions on the pros of 1080 poison. If you have those views, head off to mainstream media and discuss them where they’re the status quo. Some of us would prefer to eliminate pests with eco friendly methods, period.

Anyway a recent piece of good news comes from a certain bus company in the Wellington region that placed 1080 ads on its buses. Ads that provoke one to think about the science behind poisoning and the possibility of alternatives for conservation. This piece of news serves two purposes actually. One that there was somebody willing to put their money where their mouth is & tell the world what’s really happening with the poisoning program and how it is threatening to damage our export base (aside from ruining our ecosystem). And secondly, the fact that the ads are now being taken down through opposing pressure, proves my initial point, the thought Police are alive & well. The ads aren’t lies but it’s preferred it seems that we the public don’t draw our own conclusions about that. Please share this information far and wide. I’ve heard it’s already gone global. It becomes more farcical by the day, the outrage growing as the glaring cracks in our clean green image get too big to disguise.

Following is Carol Sawyer’s post on the anti-1080 bus ads (slightly edited):

The header image shows the “Kea” bus, in Courtenay Place, Wellington around the 6th November 2017. The signs on the buses are being removed! The image above points to the possibility that 1080 is in some of our honey.

It looks as though there has been a campaign against the ads, and one that appears to have successfully bypassed the normal channels, those being the Advertising Standards Authority.

It appears the signs are to be removed from the buses because of the complaints. The buses are from Newlands Bus Company and Mana Coaches. If people want to let the companies know they support the signs they should phone MetLink & let them know (details below).

They seem grateful for the calls, and have been flooded with complaints, so a lot of praise is needed as a counterbalance !!!

Absolutely no bad language or threats.

MetLink ( 0800-801-700 ) who handle complaints, etc for Newlands/Mana is is the best place to phone. Let them know you are extremely impressed with their bus advertisements, on Keas and honey, and congratulate them on their free-thinking and progressive attitude.

THREE years on, two women alleging 1080 poisoning while picnicking STILL waiting for answers from NZ Health

Be sure to listen to the audio in the radionz article. A reader has pointed out that the National Poisons Center Director (towards the end of the audio) says there is no test he knows of for 1080 poisoning. The toxicologist says it should not be used anywhere where humans could come into contact with it. Remember the recent images of the children near 1080 on the walking track in a Timaru drop zone?

From radionz

Two women who believe they were poisoned by 1080 more than three years ago say it’s ridiculous they are still waiting for answers from health officials. Gwen Gardner and her sister were having a picnic inland from Greymouth when a helicopter flew over them. A while later they began to feel sick, and when they returned to their car they noticed 1080 pellets nearby. The West Coast Medical Officer of Health gave the women a draft report in 2015 but they have not heard from her since.

Petition For Inquiry into the storage of bulk 1080 in the Whitianga Central Business District – please read & consider signing – it could be your district next

We the undersigned petition the Mayor, Chief Executive, and elected councillors of Thames Coromandel District Council to undertake a full and independent enquiry into the storage of 1080 in the Whitianga CBD at 20 Joan Gaskell Drive, behind Department of Conservation offices.

We further petition Council to protect the health and safety of ratepayers by undertaking independent water monitoring for poison residues following all 1080 aerial operations, within the parameters and time frames set by Manaaki Whenua /Landcare Research, and with public notification of the results.

Was it legal to store 1080 adjacent to residences and food and beverage outlets? Who knew about this storage? Who was notified? Who should have been notified?

We request that the answers to these all these questions are made public.

The Greens’ official stance on 1080 is probably not what you think it is

Following on from the recent post on 1080 & the Green party that had been mysteriously removed by those who would censor what we believe, a short commentary here on the meaning of ‘Green’ particularly with regard to the said party that claims ‘green’ … time for a re evaluation …
What springs to mind here is Kermit the Frog’s song ‘It’s not Easy Being Green’ for the older among us who remember it. It can’t be easy being really green these days, by traditional standards. Especially on poisons & insecticides like 1080 which ironically is green but nevertheless a  “highly hazardous broad spectrum poison that kills all oxygen-breathing animals and organisms” according to Dr Meriel Watts (but which officially, somehow, manages to target certain pests only, such is the brilliance of our esteemed leaders).  It’s especially not easy when the government/corporation you (at least partially) represent OWNS the poison factory. Especially when your government/corporation has been consuming 85% of the world’s supply even though it’s banned most places on the planet. Such is the conundrum of being green these days. Time for a name change praps? Bring it into line with reality. If we’re to teach our kids honesty then best be real methinks. They’ve already cottoned on to the lies we live with, praps part of why we have the highest teen suicide rate in ‘clean & green’? And the filthiest river in the Southern Hemisphere to boot.
So going by the removal of the said article regarding Michelle Read’s communications with the Green party from both here & Facebook, seems the latter is not green either? (and possibly don’t want you seeing evidence to the contrary so to speak?). It’s all getting way harder to cover up nowadays.

My site was hacked & a post about the Green Party’s 1080 stance deleted!

Two days ago I had an as yet unpublished post featuring communications with and about the Green Party’s stance on 1080, hacked into and deleted.

I find this particularly disturbing and believe it illustrates the reach now of surveillance note particularly  ‘Five Eyes.

How this came about was curious in that it involved Facebook initially. The information contained in the item was in fact was posted on Facebook by a fellow blogger and consisted simply of a record of communications between another blogger and the Green Party about their stance on the use of 1080 poison in NZ. That original information with names, is posted below.

The information was taken down by Facebook actually, with no explanation given as would normally be the case. It contains no offensive remarks (as can be seen) and did not appear to violate any of the rules. A discussion ensued where I asked to be given a copy of the information so I could post it to this site. I duly copied it and dated it to be published on Saturday 4th November 2017 (next day).

When I returned that day to finish off editing the post, my own comments remained but the communications between the Green Party and the blogger had vanished completely. On there was an information video by DoC NZ about 1080, a link for which was in the Greens communication. I deleted the video thinking it must be an error of sorts, and then replaced the information that had been deleted, thinking I must not have properly saved the original post.

Whilst I was doing so, in between saving it and previewing it (whereby a copy of how it will look once published appears) the information DISAPPEARED AGAIN and the video REAPPEARED.

Now to cover bases, my site is a free WordPress site. I had availed myself of their two step authentication process which means aside from the usual login password to WordPress, I was also sent a text message each login with a one time new SECOND password. So the hacker (presuming this was the work of a hacker & perhaps a more savvy internet user may be able to shed more light on this) had gotten past the two steps, and supposedly had access to my text message.

I’m left wondering why of course, this person was keen to delete the Greens’ communications. And curious about the progression from Facebook to WordPress. WordPress, having taken a while to respond to my query on this, eventually advised me to change my password. No other explanation. I’m awaiting further information.

Here is the original post to Facebook, posted by Carol Sawyer, citing communications by Michelle Read:

THE GREENS ON 1080 POISON

Michelle Read wrote to the Greens, a comprehensive, lucid letter, complete with scientific tables and facts, with this accompanying note:

30 October, 2017

Dear James Shaw,

Thank you for replying to my email of 14th September via Geraldine Molloy and Stephen Lungley. It was good to hear the different views put forward by your party. Congratulations on the outcome of the election.

Please find some more helpful information which I hope you decide to appropriately distribute to those in your party who will make important decisions for our environment.

It is vital we reduce our pesticides use in line with the ‘developed world’ instead of escalating them on the basis of an ideology. We cannot afford to keep pretending that poisons are an answer to a problem that may not even exist in the way it has been presented to the public. Please do take a moment to read this.

Whilst the other OECD nations are reducing pesticide use, New Zealand alone is bucking the trend and escalating the use of these chemical poisons. The compound known as 1080 is such an example of extraordinarily high use of a deadly poison… some would say it is overkill.

***********************************************************

Here is the reply she received ( I have even been nice enough to correct the spelling in the credits Geoffrey Woodhouse has at the bottom of his letter. He had “Assiocate Minister for Environment” ) :

2 November, 2017

“On behalf of Hon Eugenie Sage, Minister of Conservation, thank you for your message of 30 October regarding the use of 1080 in pest control operations.

There is a lot of good information provided on the Department of Conservation website that can answer the concerns you raise. The following page covers most of the key points: http://www.doc.govt.nz/1080

Here’s a video from New Zealand’s Threatened Species Ambassador that explains why 1080 is an essential tool in protecting endemic species: https://www.facebook.com/DOCTSAmbassador/videos/380996898900459/?hc_ref=PAGES_TIMELINE

I recommend that you read the recent report of the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment on this issue; it is very approachable and provides an independent, scientific assessment of the points you have raised. I have attached the link here: http://www.pce.parliament.nz/…/evaluating-the-use-of-1080.p…

And here is Michelle’s response to that :

That is a very disappointing response and does not address my complaint.

The current failed aerial poisoning programme has existed for 64 years. It doesn’t work. There are no credible DoC reports or data to show net benefit to any species in the New Zealand forests, apart from rats and mice that is.

Please read the following:

A recent review highlighting several reasons for concern regarding the New Zealand Government’s policy of widespread aerial poisoning with sodium monofluoroacetate (1080), was sent to several Government ministers and staff (in August 2016). A letter in reply, in support of the ongoing use of 1080, was received from the Department of Conservation (DoC). The letter claims that there is foundational evidence aerial 1080 poisoning is ‘safe’, will retain its efficacy against rats throughout repeated applications, has desirable biodiversity outcomes, and that there are no current alternatives to its continued use. These claims are refuted based on documented evidence. Further, examination of documents concerning the management of two species, kea (Nestor notabilis) and mohua (Mohoua ochrocephala), reveals no scientific, ecological basis supporting pest control by DoC. There is an urgent need to review conservation management in New Zealand.

With the anomalies noted in Kea deaths, a serious upgrade in monitoring is required for us to see that 1080 is actually doing what DoC says it does

It is very clear we need better accounting of numbers with this poisoning programme.

As this letter by Ron Eddy in yesterday’s Otago Daily Times points out, in 2014 at the start of it’s ‘Battle for the Birds’ programme, the Dept of Conservation claimed there were only 1000 to 2000 Kea left in the wild.

To summarize the info in this letter:

  • DoC recently announce they have “no breed to release programme operating to help increase our declining Kea population”
  • DoC further announces on 28 Oct 2017 that “there are ongoing threats to wild Kea” (Bird of the Year)
  • DoC’s info reveals that “between 2008 and 2014 the government, DoC and Ospri aerial 1080 operations had poisoned 24 out of 199 monitored Kea”
  • We can never know of course how many unmonitored Kea died of 1080 poisoning in the operations (and why aren’t they testing as previously noted with Kiwi deaths to prove that 1080 is actually doing what it purports to?)
  • DoC info supporting the start of the Battle for the Birds programme in 2014 “claimed there were 1,000 to 2,000 Kea left in the wild
  • Even though the department acknowledges that the Kea population is still declining it is now claiming there are 5000 to 7000 Kea left in the wild!

1B kea numbers editorial.jpg

Mainstream media’s bias on 1080

“One study in 2013 followed 34 monitored Kea in a poison-drop area. Five of them were found dead after the drop, and analysis confirmed 1080 as the cause of death. That’s a mortality rate of nearly 15%…

… nowhere in the article was there mention of the Kea’s significant risk to 1080 poison…”

One instance when silence is not golden …

A letter to the editor of the Dominion Post points out quite clearly here that mainstream media is guilty of omitting the blatantly obvious in their reporting… misleading the public perception of the reality of 1080 poison. If you care to examine the research on 1080 (the independent research, not that of those who justify 1080 use) you will find some serious holes with some serious leakage.

DoC’s storage of 1080 raised concerns back in 2014 at Port Nelson

In light of the recent incident over storage of 1080 in the Whitianga CBD and associated assault on a senior person, (an author and conservationist) in a public car park, this reflects further on the public safety issues surrounding these scenarios. Educate yourself on 1080 (the independent research) and the very real issues of concern that the MSM is not telling you. Not really. And these peaceful protesters are being painted as violent thugs. This senior man was no thug.  EnvirowatchRangitikei
From the Nelson Mail
CONCERNED CITIZEN: Charter boat operator Barry Bird is surprised 1080 is being held at Port Nelson…Port dust was always blowing on to the site behind the Anchor Restaurant & Bar where he had been working on his boat, he said. Pedestrians often walked past No 45 but there were no signs telling them it was a 1080 bait facility.

The Department of Conservation is refusing to confirm or deny that 1080-laced baits are being handled at a Port Nelson warehouse across the street from a bar-restaurant and close to several other businesses.

A forklift was loading tandem trucks with bales of baits yesterday at AS Fiskevegn House, a blue-and-white warehouse over the road from the Anchor Restaurant & Bar in Vickerman St.

Charter boat operator Barry Bird, working on his boat in the area, was surprised and alarmed to find that the baits were being stored and transported from there for several weeks, with no warning signs on the road side of the building or its fence.

When the Nelson Mail took his concerns to DOC, it said they had three storage facilities in operation at Port Nelson. Only one housed poisoned baits, with non-toxic baits at the other two.

DOC wouldn’t say which of three places held the poisoned baits, or where at the port the other two facilities were.

Bird, who is a hunter but said he wasn’t a member of the Ban 1080 Party and wasn’t totally opposed to the poison’s use in predator control, said his concern was about public safety. He believed 1080 was highly toxic. “It’s a major hazard.”

Port dust was always blowing on to the site behind the Anchor Restaurant & Bar where he had been working on his boat, he said. Pedestrians often walked past No 45 but there were no signs telling them it was a 1080 bait facility.

“They wouldn’t have a clue about what’s going on there. If there was a fire or anything here and the wind was blowing the wrong way, this could be catastrophic.”

The baits were in shrink-wrapped bags but a forklift could pierce one, he said, letting out dust.

“There’s plenty of rural places they could store it where in the event of a catastrophic event, they wouldn’t pollute everybody.”

  • Bird said none of the business people he’d spoken to in the area had been informed of the 1080 operation.
  • The Anchor Restaurant & Bar manager confirmed that she knew nothing of the operation.

DOC spokeswoman Trish Grant said there were 73 tonnes of non-toxic bait and 150 tonnes of toxic bait in storage in the port industrial area. Non-toxic cereal baits are dropped first to encourage rats and possums to eat them, with poisoned baits dropped as a follow-up. “The 1080 bait is being stored, handled and transported strictly in accordance with Hazardous Substances and New Organism Act (HSNO) requirements,” Grant said.

The bait containing 1080 was in a storage facility secure and appropriate for storage of hazardous substances, with warning signs in place at the building’s entrances. Exact locations were being kept secret for security reasons.

Grant said the bait had been stored since May, and was primarily for use in Nelson-Marlborough as part of the Battle for the Birds programme to protect native species against the predator boom caused by this year’s beech mast. Grant said the bait was bagged and shrink-wrapped in pallet loads at the Whanganui factory.

“In one instance, some bait was re-baled inside one of the secure Nelson storage facilities.”

1080 is toxic to humans but the Ministry for Primary Industries says that to “get sick” you would need to eat at least 100g of carrot baits; drink more than 5000 litres of water in one sitting from a waterway directly contaminated by a poison drop; or eat at least 37kg of meat, in one sitting, from sheep that died of 1080 poisoning.

1080 is an alias for Monofluoroacetate, a chemical. Monofluoroacetate was originally developed and marketed as an insecticide. It functions primarily by interfering with the citrate step in the Krebs cycle [5]. The Krebs cycle is the major and an essential mechanism by which all air breathing creatures utilize food to produce energy. It is therefore universally toxic to all animals, essentially every living thing except plants and some micro-organisms. The degree of toxicity of 1080 is extreme, but varies somewhat among species. It is categorised by the World Health Organization (WHO) as 1A, their highest rating, “extremely toxic” [1,2]. The PAN pesticide database classifies 1080 as one of the few “PAN Bad Actor Chemicals”, by which it means “highly acutely toxic” [2]. It can kill every air-breathing animal. One hundred milligrams is sufficient to kill an adult human [1]. In theory, one could kill at least 20 million people with the amount being dropped into New Zealand Forests every year.
Dr Q Whiting-OKeefe (BA Chemistry, Math), MD, FACMI

The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies 1080 as ‘Extremely Hazardous’, most countries ban it outright. NZ uses 85% of the world’s supply.

A senior author & conservationist is assaulted by DoC employees in a public car park say two eye witnesses (includes Police Statement)

INCLUDES DR. WENDY POND’S WITNESS STATEMENT TO DoC ASSAULT ON GRAEME STURGEON, COROMANDEL

assault4.jpg
Graeme Sturgeon showing injuries and torn clothing from an assault by DoC employees

From Carol Sawyer

Author and conservationist, Graeme Sturgeon, was assaulted, his clothing ripped, his face left bloodied, and his car doorhandle broken, by DoC employees on 17 October 2017.

“…the driver’s door was opened, he was hauled out, and punched in the face by a DOC contractor, Mr X, without warning or explanation.”

There were two witnesses, Dr. Wendy Pond, and artist Diana Halstead. They had been told DoC were loading 1080 poison in the middle of Whitianga and had gone to investigate. All three are senior citizens in their seventies. They had done nothing wrong and were in a public car park and were amazed at the scene that confronted them.

I am told the 1080 poison had apparently been stored in the DoC office in the CENTRE OF TOWN, for approximately six weeks, unbeknown to the Mayor of Thames, Coromandel District Council, maybe also unknown to the Fire Chief, and apparently unknown to the other tenants of the building. DoC were caught out breaking all the rules, in other words !

I should add that the New World Supermarket is across the road, Countdown is 24 Joan Gaskell Road, so virtually next door. The 1080 poison was surrounded by food outlets in other words.

As well as this the 1080 poison was apparently stored in another tenant, Platinum Homes’ storage area. Platinum Homes, I am told, knew nothing off this and are furious.

Here is the witness statement of Dr. Wendy Pond, signed at the Whitianga Police Station today. Diana Halstead has also written a witness statement, which will be posted soon.

PS: The truck photos are in daylight because they were taken by the person who made the contact phone call to Graeme Sturgeon, but the trucks didn’t move until dark – as it was obviously a clandestine operation, and Diana, Wendy and Graeme arrived on dark.

****************************************************

STATEMENT BY A WITNESS TO THE ASSAULT:

Statement by Dr Wendy Rona Pond, secretary of Manu Waiata Restoration & Protection Society, regarding violent and unregulated actions by Department of Conservation staff in the Liquor King car park, 20 Joan Gaskell Drive, Whitianga around 8.30 pm on 17 October 2017.

1. DoC’s communication guidelines describe consultation as a willingness to take on board new ideas. In my experience, DoC staff do not give credibility to public knowledge, although worldwide the term “citizen science” recognises that the public conservation movement is observant and articulate. I hold in high regard the skills and observations of Coromandel permaculturalists, bushmen, beekeepers, pig hunters, medical herbalists, retired scientists, engineers and tradesmen who advise my secretarial work. These people have observed first hand the harm and cruelty of 1080 and want their knowledge to be respected.

Instead, a wide discrepancy has developed between “DoC science” and its militarisation, and on the other hand public awareness of the harm to the mauri of the forests from the alien chemistry of the poisons used by DoC for predator control, and a strong sense in rural communities that we are entitled to a say in how our forests are managed. Coromandel residents place strong emphasis on the role of forests in recreation and employment and training youth in bushcraft and self reliance.

I believe this gap could be removed with genuine consultation. Meanwhile the gap was the basis for events on Tuesday 17 October 2017. Note that all actions on our part were non-violent.

2. Around 8pm on Tuesday 17 October people gathered to camp and observe and demonstrate at Kaimarama Road learned that bales of 1080 poison baits were being loaded onto trucks in the vicinity of the Countdown food market. Manu Waiata has reported to the Attorney General on the unlawful uses of 1080, but such blatant disregard for public health and safety was astonishing. I decided to make my own observation.

I drove to Liquor King and parked amongst customers outside Platinum Homes. I walked along the cars looking for others from Kaimarama. As I turned around the back of the building I was startled to come across a contingent of men in dark clothing, standing in front of a high cab with the initials HR (HeliResources) and on the tray a stack covered in black polythene, well roped down. I recognised the DoC 1080 projects manager Nick Kelly and the DoC 1080 senior ranger Steve Bolton. In the night shadows I saw Graeme Sturgeon, standing unsteadily with his nose bleeding and his shirt torn open. Tucked against the back wall of the building was Sturgeon’s campervan which is a local icon for its motto above the front windscreen, “See your own country now before DoC poisons it to hell”.

Parked across the entrance to the back car park I saw a saloon with a lone woman standing beside it facing the wall of men. I recognised Diana Halstead by her flaming hair. She told me hastily that Sturgeon had been beaten up by DoC and the police had been called. I learned later in the evening that Diana Halstead had followed Sturgeon in her car and had stopped when the campervan stopped suddenly. Sturgeon had not anticipated he would run into a convoy of trucks at the back of the building. As he was bringing his van to a halt, the driver’s door was opened, he was hauled out, and punched in the face by a DOC contractor, Mr X, without warning or explanation.

The suddeness of the DoC beating beggared belief, until I reflected that they had been caught red-handed in an illicit operation. Diana Halstead’s headlights had shone onto the campervan and she had witnessed the beating.
I realised with a shock that we were at the back of the DoC office newly adopted for the 2017 aerial 1080 operations. I had previously parked here and knew that the trucks occupied an area marked with white lines for public parking. Why were DoC staff loading the trucks in the public car park? I was confounded, but I didn’t have time to reflect.

Diana had stepped out of her car and when I arrived she was being told by a DoC agent unknown to me (Mr X) that she had entered a private work place and was to remove her car. I thought in a flash – there are no notices stating the parking spaces are reserved as a DoC work place – there are no notices stating it is a hazard area – the trucks are not separated by barriers with poison signs on them – there are no poison warning signs on the trucks – this is a clandestine operation – DoC have been caught off-guard by people who recognise what the trucks are carrying – maybe that’s why they beat up Sturgeon – Diana’s car had a clear line of sight to Sturgeon being beaten up – in an unresolved dispute she has a right not to move her car.

3. Right. DoC is bullying her. I said loudly, “Diana, go and sit in your car and don’t move it.”; Then I said to the crowd of men, firmly, “You must all wait for the police.”; A bearded DoC agent (Mr Y) stepped up to me and said, “You havent got a clue.”; I was startled. A scholar whose work is read internationally is told she hasn’t got a clue. I saw the DoC operations manager and his senior ranger couldn’t help being amused. The world split open. None of us has a clue what we are doing to our eco-systems, dosing native forests with an alien chemical – Whether DoC is right or we are right, none of us has a clue about long-term consequences because there is no research – A world authority on scientific method has said that New Zealand’s wholesale poisoning of eco-systems is madness – All of us standing here in this clandestine operation are engaged in madness. This daft human being is enlightened. I began to laugh. I couldn’t stop laughing as each new thought dawned on me. – All our evidence shows that what we are doing to our forests is madness.

4. Now Mr Y saw another chance for ridicule, “What are you on?” he said. This is a sinister side of DoC – staff have been taught to think of us not as scientists, ecologists, skilled bushmen, good men making a living, but as hippies and druggies – mongrels Maggie Barry calls us – this is how the American military are trained to think of common people as the enemy – DoC has militarised aerial poisoning instead of using trapping for local industry and employment. A senior scientist says, “You would only use 1080 if you were desperate.”; The situation in Moehau and Papakai forests is not desperate. The need to use poisoning is a mind-set, not a reality. It is part of DoC’s madness.

5. Meanwhile, DoC staff began moving the trucks out along the far side of the building. There was a sense of haste. They were going to leave before the police arrived.

6. I returned to my car with the purpose of moving before I became hemmed in by the convoy. One of the trucks had already come to a standstill behind my car. Mr X appeared and asked me to wait for all the trucks to assemble.
On reflecting that the violent Mr X had no authority in a public car park, and no authority over a member of the public, and recalling that his instructions to Diana had been against her best interest, I swivelled round and looked square through the back window. The next truck had not arrived and there was a clear space behind me. I put the car into reverse gear, and my foot on the brake to hold it while I checked again for clearance. While I was looking backwards Mr X deftly opened my car door (breaking and entering), took hold of the ignition key, and attempted to pull the key out (intention to detain). I took my left hand off the gear lever, and using both my hands I tried with all my strength to wrestle with his hand. As we struggled, there was moment when his grip released and I could put my right hand over the key. To my utter astonishment Mr X tried again to wrench out both my hand and the key (assault). I was determined to protect my privacy and safety from this man who had already demonstrated that he could act with intuitive violence.
Eventually he let go. I am still revolted by his insinuation and indecent swiftness, and alarmed by DoC’s disregard for lawful process.
Steve Bolton, Doc 1080 senior ranger, had observed the actions of Mr X without intervening, and he now stepped forward and said, “Your car was stopped because you backed into me.” It is clear that Steve Bolton was inventing a cover for Mr X’s action, as my car had not moved. It was still sitting where I had parked it and when I had looked backwards through my rear window, there had been no person in view. If Steve Bolton was behind my car, he would have been able to hold up his hand to stop the approaching trucks and let me out. And I am troubled that a senior DoC ranger did not intercede when Mr X assaulted me.

7. On Wednesday 18 October we held a non-violent demonstration at the mKaimarama bridge. Women, children, scientists, bushmen, people of all walks.
Ninety percent of New Zealanders prefer hunting and trapping for predator control. I watched the HR helicopters flying above a thriving forest canopy that has scarcely a dead tree. The heketara was in full flower, like patches of snow in the bush. This is when native bees emerge and collect pollen. With the decline of honey bees we are dependent on native bees for pollinators. Why would any sane ranger poison them?
Why would a New Zealand government department ignore its local community, militarise its conservation operations, break the law by handling toxic substances in a shopping complex, assault an eyewitness, take the keys of cars in a public space, and leave before the police arrived? Is DoC outside the rule of law?

8. Events on 17 October demonstrate to the public that violence and lawlessness were perpetrated by Department of Conservation, and not by us.

9. I request :

That Department of Conservation is charged by the NZ Police with ignoring public health and safety and with ignoring its own regulations and controls.

That the DoC operations manager is charged with leaving the scene of an unlawful assault without waiting for the police, without providing medical assistance to Graeme Sturgeon, and without supplying the identity of the perpetrator of the assault.

That the NZ Police bring charges of assault and intention to detain against Mr X. This man is not constrained by law and decency and he is a danger to the public.

That Steve Bolton, senior DoC ranger, and Nick Kelly, DoC 1080 operations manager, are charged with failing to intervene when a security agent under their jurisdiction assaulted members of the public who had made no act of violence.

That all DoC staff, and all agents employed by Department of Conservation, are retrained to act without violence; to respect citizen science; and to reach accord with the local community before carrying out predator control and other programs affecting people’s own environment.

I suggest that Mr X is sent to a psychiatrist for re-assessment and then sent to restore physically disabled people. He is a man of intuitive violence and devoid of conscience, but deft.

I suggest that Mr Y is sent to university for re-education. He is daft but he has potential.

Signed
Wendy Pond

Further updates (23 Oct. 2017)

“The three of us decided we would wait for the police. Graeme S rang Whitianga Police Station and was connected to Hamilton and after an hour or so a policeman arrived, but he went straight to talk to the DOC office staff inside the building. We continued to stand in the cold night air. We could hear DOC staff laughing during their police interview. No medical attention was offered to Graeme S even though DOC staff would have had a First Aid medical kit and a cup of tea in their office.”

COROMANDEL ASSAULT BY DoC – NO POLICE INCIDENT REPORT HAS BEEN FILED !

This morning I spoke with Dr. Wendy Pond, a former Senior Lecturer at Victoria University, Wellington, who was one of the witnesses to the assault on Graeme Sturgeon on the evening of 17 October, 2017, in the carpark at the back of the Liquor King building in Whitianga’s CBD, where DoC workers were loading 20 tonnes of 1080 poison baits, ready for aerial distribution over the Coromandel countryside the following day.

Graeme Sturgeon, Wendy Pond, and Diana Halstead had all come to see what was going on after being alerted to the poison loading operation by John Allen, who in turn had been alerted to it by Benny Rebz. Benny had just happened to stumble on the loading operation by chance and immediately realized what was happening and called an alert.

Diana, Wendy and Graeme had been camped for the night on a farm road, Kaimarama Road, ten minutes drive away, near the site of the upcoming 1080 drop. Their intention had been to be out early in the morning looking for baits and dust in the river, as water ( people’s drinking water ! ) was their main concern. (See photos of the Kaimarama River, beside Kaimarama Road ).

When they had driven back into town, and arrived at 20 Joan Gaskell Drive ( the Liquor King building ), Graeme drove down the alleyway to the public carpark at Liquor King first and was punched while still in his vehicle, he was hauled out of his vehicle, the doorhandle broken and his clothing torn.

Wendy and Diana both filed witness reports with the police, and assault reports of their own, with the Whitianga police on Saturday. I have posted these up previously, but both witness reports are here at the end of this post for those who have not caught up with this outrageous story yet.

All three people are senior citizens in their seventies. Diana Halstead is an artist, Graeme Sturgeon is an author and conservationist and Dr. Wendy Pond is an anthropologist.

Here is what Dr. Pond told me this morning :

After Graeme was assaulted she and Diana were worried about him. He wasn’t in a good way. They assumed the police had been called and waited. Eventually they realized the police could not have been called and rang the police themselves. Constable Bernard Deadman arrived about 10.00 pm. Wendy raced up to him and said “We’ve been assaulted” and he said ” I will talk to DoC first.” and went inside the building, where he stayed for approximately half an hour, before talking to them. They could hear laughter inside. Wendy said it seemed like a long time because it was cold and they were shivering, and shaken by events, and concerned about Graeme’s welfare and felt he should have medical attention.

Wendy said ” The first thing they should have done was attend to Graeme’s medical condition. He was shaky and shaken and his nose was bleeding.”

***********************************************************

Graeme Sturgeon was seen by his doctor the next day.

On Saturday, Diana made the long trip back up to Coromandel, from Te Mata where she lives, as she and Wendy had an appointment at 11.00 am to handover their witness statements in front of the local Coromandel policeman Sergeant John Morrissey.

Yesterday, Diana Halstead rang the Whitianga Police and got put through to the Hamilton Police Station ( this happens occasionally in small country towns – you get diverted to the nearest Main Centre ). Hamilton Police told her no incident report had been filed for the night of Tuesday, 17 October, 2017.

Half an hour later Wendy Pond rang and managed to get through to the Whitianga Police. She spoke to Sergeant Andrew Morrison who is in charge of this incident and asked him why there wasn’t an incident report. He replied ” Well I suppose I haven’t got round to it yet. But I have interviewed the man concerned”. ( Wendy is not sure whether this meant Graeme Sturgeon or the man who committed the assault.)

Sgt Morrison also said it was up to the Police whether they decided to lay charges or not.

Dr. Pond has asked me to add this : “The Police, being local, are members of the local community, and the people do not want to get offside with the Police”, and Graeme Sturgeon said to me this morning, “Many local policemen are hunters, and do not like 1080 poison either.”

*******************************************************************

There are so many things wrong with what happened last week in Coromandel it is hard to know where to start. Fortunately the locals concerned have quite a lot of photographic evidence.

1 ) Loading 20 tonnes of 1080 poison in a public carpark. Platinum Homes, in the front of the building knew nothing of this. They had clients coming and going until 8.30 at night on that evening, I’m told. About six weeks ago they were told they could no longer use the storage area they had been using at the back of the building but were not told that was because it was to be loaded up with 1080 ! There are private homes right next door to the carpark. A busy New World supermarket is across the road and a Countdown supermarket almost next door too. The proximity of 20 tonnes of one of the most lethal poisons in the world to food outlets is alarming to say the least. What if there had been a fire ?! Locals say it appears the Whitianga Fire Brigade were not aware of this substance being stored in the middle of their town.( See Google Earth photos, including residential properties right next door and photos of the workers loading 1080 poison in a public carpark, with no signs saying ” Keep Out” ).

2 ) None of the workers loading the poison are wearing gloves or masks. ( See photos )

3 ) The security guards at the 1080 drop zone had no ID and their vehicle had had its number plate removed and its registration and diesel labels removed from their window sleeves. They had set up a “pretend” high voltage electric fence on a farm road, Kaimarama Road. ( See photos )

4) Most seriously of all, three senior citizens, who were doing nothing wrong and were in a public place, were assaulted by DoC security guards who refused to give their names, while local DoC staff known to the three elderly people did nothing to stop what was happening.( See photos of Graeme Sturgeon with his clothing ripped to shreds and his nose bloodied ).

Witness statements :

DIANA HALSTEAD’S WITNESS STATEMENT TO POLICE RE DoC ASSAULT ON GRAEME STURGEON, COROMANDEL

Author and conservationist, Graeme Sturgeon, was assaulted, his clothing ripped, , ( his jacket and his shirt – you can see the evidence by his collar ), his face left bloodied, and his car doorhandle broken, by DoC employees on 17 October 2017. There were four witnesses, Dr. Wendy Pond, and artist Diana Halstead. They had been told DoC were loading 1080 poison in the middle of Whitianga and had gone to investigate. All three are senior citizens in their seventies. They had done nothing wrong and were in a public carpark and were amazed at the scene that confronted them.
Local people have informed me that the 1080 poison had apparently been stored at the back of the DoC office in the CENTRE OF TOWN, for approximately six weeks, unbeknownst to the Mayor of Thames Coromandel District Council, maybe also unknown to the Fire Chief, and apparently unknown to the other tenants of the building. DoC were caught out breaking all the rules, in other words !
I should add that the New World Supermarket is across the road, Countdown is 24 Joan Gaskell Road, so virtually next door. The 1080 poison was surrounded by food outlets in other words.
Here is the witness statement of artist Diana Halstead, signed at the Whitianga Police Station today.
PS: The truck photos are in daylight because they were taken by John Allen who made the contact phone call to Graeme Sturgeon, but the trucks didn’t move until dark – as it was obviously a clandestine operation, and Diana, Wendy and Graeme arrived on dark.
Statement to NZ Police by Diana Halstead
I, Diana Mary Halstead of Te Mata, make this statement that,
On 17 October I was camped with Graeme Sturgeon and Dr Pond in Kaimarama valley waiting to observe the use of aerial poisoning on the Papakai public conservation lands. We had brought posters for a demonstration to alert the public to DOC’s intention to drop 1080 into the Whitianga water supply.
Just on dark a contact phone call came through to the effect that DOC has been loading 1080 in the Whitianga CBD. I followed Graeme Sturgeon’s camper van into town. We turned into a wide alleyway with herringbone parking on the right hand side of a building. I was right behind the campervan with my full night lights on as it was now pitch dark. Graeme turned the corner at the back of the building and came to a sudden stop because in front of him were four enormous trucks. I couldn’t see any trucking company logos on the trucks, nor any of the 1080 warning signs DoC is required to put up.
In front of me there was a half circle of security guards and DOC staff milling around the front of the trucks so I guessed we had come to a DOC warehouse hidden at the back of the Liquor King shops. Suddenly I saw Graeme S being torn from his vehicle and being manhandled in the full blaze of my headlights. I leapt from my car leaving the headlights on and called out, “Graeme, what are they doing to you ?”; Graeme looked disoriented and dishevelled, his clothes torn and his hat which he always wears, not to be seen. There were no signs or barriers anywhere to say he should not have driven round the building. Also there were no signs or barriers to warn the public that there was a dangerous toxin being loaded in the car park. Handling sacks of 1080 pellets always causes dust and the 1080 dust is poisonous when breathed in.
The security guard that had mauled Graeme S asked me to move my car. At that point I heard Graeme say, “Diana don’t move your car until the police come.”; The same security guard then stepped into my car to take possession of it, but I was quick enough to put my hand through the open window and remove the keys. I consider his was an action of assault as I was standing beside the car and he was acting against my wishes. He should have waited for the police to decide what he was permitted by law to do.
Then another bearded security man, possibly the driver of the leading truck, stepped forward and said, “If you don’t move your car I will move it with my truck.”; I knew I was being bullied with the suggestion of aggression if I didn’t comply. I asked the security guard who had mauled Graeme what his name was. He refused to answer. If there is a road accident both parties are required to give each other their names and addresses.
At this point a DOC officer intervened and said, “Diane, please move your car”; but I could hear Wendy saying to wait for the police. As I did not get into my car the DOC officer moved back into the group of security men. Suddenly the trucks seemed to be receding. Looking back down the alleyway to Joan Gaskell Drive I could see the first of the trucks had reached the highway by means of the alley on the north eastern side of the building. By now I had realised the DOC operational headquarters were at the back of the building and the 1080 must have been stored adjacent to the DOC offices.
The three of us decided we would wait for the police. Graeme S rang Whitianga Police Station and was connected to Hamilton and after an hour or so a policeman arrived, but he went straight to talk to the DOC office staff inside the building. We continued to stand in the cold night air. We could hear DOC staff laughing during their police interview. No medical attention was offered to Graeme S even though DOC staff would have had a First Aid
medical kit and a cup of tea in their office.
The next morning at 7 am we set up our banners at the Kaimarama bridge. Others came to join us. We caught the attention of the traffic between Whitianga and Tairua. Motorists waved and tooted. Opposition to aerial poisoning is on the move.
I would like the following charges to be laid by the NZ Police.
1. DOC stored a highly toxic substance in an urban area occupied by food and liquor outlets.
I was told the operation was uncovered by a member of the public while driving round the building and that the smell of 1080 was recognisable, indicating that 1080 is a contaminate carried on the air.
2. DOC used a public space for transfer of dangerous goods. There was no signage on the trucks or in the car park to warn the public that a toxic substance with no known antidote was being handled in the open.
3. A DOC agent assaulted a senior citizen who drove into an area that was known to him as a public parking area. There was no signage stating that the area was closed to the public.
On the contrary it seems DOC wanted the area to look as if it was still an ordinary parking area so as not to alert the public to what was going on there.
Mr Sturgeon was travelling alone and unarmed. Mr Sturgeon made no action which warranted being pulled from his car. He was not addressed. He was not warned of any transgression. His physical ability to withstand a beating was not ascertained. He was literally dragged from his vehicle, as his ripped clothes testify. If my night headlights had not been shining on the scene and if I hadn’t called out, I think Mr Sturgeon would have been beaten up even more. These are actions which our media attributes to terrorists and mafia gangsters.
4. There was no reprimand from the DOC managers when the security guard under their supervision committed an unprovoked assault by beating up Mr Sturgeon. DOC managers did not provide Mr Sturgeon with medical assistance.
5. A DOC agent had committed an assault on a senior citizen but DOC managers allowed the agent to leave the scene before the police arrived and without providing his identity when asked.
6. DOC managers left the scene without calling a doctor to examine Mr Sturgeon.
7. Also I wish to challenge these actions by Department of Conservation, Hauraki Office :
DOC managers did not apologise to Mr Sturgeon for the assault, leaving the impression that they condone the use of violence.
DOC managers did not provide Mr Sturgeon with first aid even though a first aid kit must have been held in the DOC office. They did not even bring Mr Sturgeon a cup of tea.
If DOC’s actions were lawful, why were thy conducted after dark and why did staff react with excessive aggression against three elderly people all over 70 who entered a public car park. The men seemed jumpy. I believe we were witnesses to a criminal activity. If this had been a bona fide activity there would have been no cause for the alarm they showed when three senior citizens arrived on the scene.
I request that I am given the name of the DOC security guard who tried to take possession of my car. He knows who I am and I have a right to know who he is. If he was doing an honourable job, would he want to keep his name hidden?
I request a copy of DOC’s explanation for why they beat up Mr Sturgeon.
In 2013 I was one of the artists who demonstrated against the poisoning of Moehau’s public conservation land. The NZ Police guards shared their lunch with us. In 2017 the DOC managers removed public consultation from the process; used violence against intelligent public commentators; and conducted aerial poisoning in the style of a military operation.

DoC Caught Breaking Their Own Rules – Storing 1080 in Whitianga’s CBD, Adjacent to Food Outlets

COROMANDEL AERIAL 1080 POISON OPERATION – POISON STORED BY DoC IN WHITIANGA CBD

By Carol Sawyer

The 1080 poison for this operation had apparently been stored in the DoC office in the CENTRE OF TOWN, 20 Joan Gaskell Road, for approximately six weeks, unbeknown to the Mayor of Thames, Coromandel District Council, maybe also unknown to the Fire Chief, and apparently unknown to the other tenants of the building. DoC were caught out breaking all the rules, in other words !

A 2 1080 storage coromandel.jpg

I should add that the New World Supermarket is across the road, (photo above) Countdown is 24 Joan Gaskell Road, so virtually next door. The 1080 poison was surrounded by food outlets in other words.

As well as this the 1080 poison was apparently stored in another tenant, Platinum Homes’, storage area. Platinum Homes, I am told, knew nothing off this and are furious.

Below are Google Earth street view photos, showing that this was a completely unacceptable place to store 20 tonnes of 1080 poison !

It must be remembered that sodium monofluoroacetate (Compound 1080) is a World Health Organisation Class 1A Eco-toxin, with no known antidote, and banned in most countries.

This situation was uncovered by a young man who lived over the fence in a housing estate because the smell of the cinnamon in the 1080 baits was recognizable in the air!

This situation (DoC loading up the 1080 poison) was uncovered by Benny Rebz around 5.00 pm on the 17th October. He alerted John Allen who came down to see for himself and then alerted others.

Houses exactly next door to where 20 tonnes of 1080 poison baits were stored for approximately 6 weeks. They were completely unaware apparently. This poses a huge risk had there been a fire! The other major (& clearly unknown) risk to these people is the toxic dust that must have been in the air when loading and unloading the 1080

Why is a NZ vineyard that’s certified organic using poison that kills falcons?

Thanks to Carol Sawyer for this piece of investigation. Just how organic is organic these days? With NZ’s current sell out to corporate interests I’m wondering more and more. Just how honest are these industries being? Some of these people just refuse to examine the independent research and profits win out over our health & conservation. Folk need to think about this as they purchase products from a country that falsely advertises itself as ‘clean and green’, and pledges to be protecting its wildlife. Gone are the days. All these advertising ploys are just that and pay little more than lip service it appears, to sustainable practices. EnvirowatchRangitikei

I have talked to many, many Central Otago vineyards over the last month and it has … become completely clear to me that it is perfectly possible to maintain a low, no-nuisance rabbit population without using cruel poisons… Carol Sawyer

PEREGRINE WINES, CENTRAL OTAGO – KILLING FALCONS ?

Why is a vineyard that names itself after a FALCON, has a brand logo that is a stylised falcon, and is certified organic with BioGro, using a poison that will kill falcons by secondary poisoning ?!!! Today I have been sent these photos and the irony has just struck me.

Their website says “A natural extension of our passion for the land, Peregrine are dedicated to helping protect some of New Zealand’s rarest native birds. As well as taking part personally in some of this country’s most successful preservation programs, Peregrine is proud to have worked with the Wingspan Trust, the Department of Conservation and the Fiordland Conservation Trust.” ???!!!!!!

I have been compiling a register of Central Otago vineyards who do not use cruel poisons on their vineyards, (see link is below also, but it is not yet complete) and when I spoke to Peregrine about a month ago I was told they had used Pindone on some of their surrounding land on the river boundary, but about 30 metres from the vines. I have today rung the poison contractor (name supplied). That information I was given was incorrect. He has told me that Pindone was spread on ALL their surrounding land, just not on the vineyards

The Eastern Falcon DOES eat carrion and can be killed by ingesting poisoned rabbits. Many hawks are killed this way too. NOT GOOD ENOUGH PEREGRINE !!!

I have talked to many, many Central Otago vineyards over the last month and it has therefore become completely clear to me that it is perfectly possible to maintain a low, no-nuisance rabbit population without using cruel poisons. The vast majority of vineyard managers do just that! Good rabbit fencing, shooters, and dogs work well.

Peregrine are on the Central Otago Wines register of vineyards that do not use cruel poisons (1080, Pindone, Magtoxin ) on their vineyard land. Should they stay or should they go? Is using the stuff on surrounding land acceptable?

As well as this they are exporting their wines. Peregrine say on their website : “We are thrilled to have cemented our relationship with our premium US wine importer, Vineyard Brands as a result of a visit earlier this month by Greg Doody, President and CEO of Vineyard Brands. During the trip hosted by our owners, Lindsay, Jude and Fraser McLachlan a long term business agreement was signed that will see our full range of wines distributed across the US.” It is a pity their website is so dishonest!
