A coincidence is it that 3 years ago: “A laboratory in Wuhan is on the cusp of being cleared to work with the world’s most dangerous pathogens”?

“Inside the Chinese lab poised to study world’s most dangerous pathogens “

… reads the headline from 2017 at the website nature.com

From WUHAN, CHINA. “Maximum-security biolab is part of plan to build network of BSL-4 facilities across China.”

A coincidence is it that 3 years later we have an outbreak of the coronavirus? EWR

The article:

“A laboratory in Wuhan is on the cusp of being cleared to work with the world’s most dangerous pathogens. The move is part of a plan to build between five and seven biosafety level-4 (BSL-4) labs across the Chinese mainland by 2025, and has generated much excitement, as well as some concerns.

Some scientists outside China worry about pathogens escaping, and the addition of a biological dimension to geopolitical tensions between China and other nations. But Chinese microbiologists are celebrating their entrance to the elite cadre empowered to wrestle with the world’s greatest biological threats.

“It will offer more opportunities for Chinese researchers, and our contribution on the BSL‑4-level pathogens will benefit the world,” says George Gao, director of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Key Laboratory of Pathogenic Microbiology and Immunology in Beijing. There are already two BSL-4 labs in Taiwan, but the National Bio-safety Laboratory, Wuhan, would be the first on the Chinese mainland.

The lab was certified as meeting the standards and criteria of BSL-4 by the China National Accreditation Service for Conformity Assessment (CNAS) in January. The CNAS examined the lab’s infrastructure, equipment and management, says a CNAS representative, paving the way for the Ministry of Health to give its approval. A representative from the ministry says it will move slowly and cautiously; if the assessment goes smoothly, it could approve the laboratory by the end of June.

BSL-4 is the highest level of biocontainment: its criteria include filtering air and treating water and waste before they leave the laboratory, and stipulating that researchers change clothes and shower before and after using lab facilities. Such labs are often controversial. The first BSL-4 lab in Japan was built in 1981, but operated with lower-risk pathogens until 2015, when safety concerns were finally overcome.

The expansion of BSL-4-lab networks in the United States and Europe over the past 15 years — with more than a dozen now in operation or under construction in each region — also met with resistance, including questions about the need for so many facilities.

“Viruses don’t know borders.”

The Wuhan lab cost 300 million yuan (US$44 million), and to allay safety concerns it was built far above the flood plain and with the capacity to withstand a magnitude-7 earthquake, although the area has no history of strong earthquakes. It will focus on the control of emerging diseases, store purified viruses and act as a World Health Organization ‘reference laboratory’ linked to similar labs around the world. “It will be a key node in the global biosafety-lab network,” says lab director Yuan Zhiming.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences approved the construction of a BSL-4 laboratory in 2003, and the epidemic of SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) around the same time lent the project momentum. The lab was designed and constructed with French assistance as part of a 2004 cooperative agreement on the prevention and control of emerging infectious diseases. But the complexity of the project, China’s lack of experience, difficulty in maintaining funding and long government approval procedures meant that construction wasn’t finished until the end of 2014.

The lab’s first project will be to study the BSL-3 pathogen that causes Crimean–Congo haemorrhagic fever: a deadly tick-borne virus that affects livestock across the world, including in northwest China, and that can jump to people.

Future plans include studying the pathogen that causes SARS, which also doesn’t require a BSL-4 lab, before moving on to Ebola and the West African Lassa virus, which do. Some one million Chinese people work in Africa; the country needs to be ready for any eventuality, says Yuan. “Viruses don’t know borders.”

Gao travelled to Sierra Leone during the recent Ebola outbreak, allowing his team to report the speed with which the virus mutated into new strains1. The Wuhan lab will give his group a chance to study how such viruses cause disease, and to develop treatments based on antibodies and small molecules, he says.

Muyi Xiao for Nature

The central monitor room at China’s National Bio-safety Laboratory.

The opportunities for international collaboration, meanwhile, will aid the genetic analysis and epidemiology of emergent diseases. “The world is facing more new emerging viruses, and we need more contribution from China,” says Gao. In particular, the emergence of zoonotic viruses — those that jump to humans from animals, such as SARS or Ebola — is a concern, says Bruno Lina, director of the VirPath virology lab in Lyon, France.

Many staff from the Wuhan lab have been training at a BSL-4 lab in Lyon, which some scientists find reassuring. And the facility has already carried out a test-run using a low-risk virus.

But worries surround the Chinese lab, too. The SARS virus has escaped from high-level containment facilities in Beijing multiple times, notes Richard Ebright, a molecular biologist at Rutgers University in Piscataway, New Jersey. Tim Trevan, founder of CHROME Biosafety and Biosecurity Consulting in Damascus, Maryland, says that an open culture is important to keeping BSL-4 labs safe, and he questions how easy this will be in China, where society emphasizes hierarchy. “Diversity of viewpoint, flat structures where everyone feels free to speak up and openness of information are important,” he says.

Yuan says that he has worked to address this issue with staff. “We tell them the most important thing is that they report what they have or haven’t done,” he says. And the lab’s international collaborations will increase openness. “Transparency is the basis of the lab,” he adds.

The plan to expand into a network heightens such concerns. One BSL-4 lab in Harbin is already awaiting accreditation; the next two are expected to be in Beijing and Kunming, the latter focused on using monkey models to study disease.

Lina says that China’s size justifies this scale, and that the opportunity to combine BSL-4 research with an abundance of research monkeys — Chinese researchers face less red tape than those in the West when it comes to research on primates — could be powerful. “If you want to test vaccines or antivirals, you need a non-human primate model,” says Lina.

But Ebright is not convinced of the need for more than one BSL-4 lab in mainland China. He suspects that the expansion there is a reaction to the networks in the United States and Europe, which he says are also unwarranted. He adds that governments will assume that such excess capacity is for the potential development of bioweapons.

“These facilities are inherently dual use,” he says. The prospect of ramping up opportunities to inject monkeys with pathogens also worries, rather than excites, him: “They can run, they can scratch, they can bite.”

Trevan says China’s investment in a BSL-4 lab may, above all, be a way to prove to the world that the nation is competitive. “It is a big status symbol in biology,” he says, “whether it’s a need or not.”

PA Pundits – International

By David Wojick, Ph.D. ~

Ever since she splashed into view I have wondered about Greta Thunberg’s reasoning. Her quoted statements, blasting the world for not doing the impossible, have given no clue where she is coming from.

Now, thanks to some detailed published statements of hers, from the World Economic Forum in Davos, I have my answer. It turns out she is hotly embracing not one, but two, howling fallacies. No wonder she sounds nuts.

To begin with, she cites the IPCC report on climate change from 2018, which claims we have only a few years left to act if theres a 67% chance of keeping the global temperature rise from now to below 0.5 degrees C. (She, like everyone else, talks about a rise…

Emails show Monsanto orchestrated GOP effort to intimidate cancer researchers

Kiwis still love this stuff (Roundup) and anyway it’s in other concoctions also on your supermarket shelves. As per usual they’re all either fast asleep, don’t care or in collusion with the govt/corporation that’s truly in bed with agrichem (IMO anyway). I had a convo recently with a worker at one of the big outlets that sell glyphosate ‘enriched’ creations for your garden edges etc who told me confidently ‘they’ (whoever they are) found it only affected those who worked with it all the time. All good for everybody else then by that calculation I expect. Councils here particularly love it. Try and take them on to dispense with it & you’ll get a glazed look whilst you reel off the independent science, then it’s – yawn – ‘next please’.  (I tried it, you’re up against bought councils & the old boys’ club of farmers).  The header image of the rats is a screen shot from Prof Seralini’s lab experiment … you can watch that at this link in case you still think glyphosate in Roundup is safe. And/or read further on our glyphosate pages. EWR

From theintercept.com

IN 2015, the World Health Organization’s cancer research arm, the International Agency for Research on Cancer, classified glyphosate, an active ingredient in the herbicide Roundup, as a “probable carcinogen,” setting off a global debate about the world’s most popular weedkiller.

Over the last four years, Republicans in Congress have excoriated and pushed to defund the IARC, casting their defense of the chemical as a quest on behalf of small American farmers. Rep. Frank Lucas, R-Okla., has written that his outrage over the cancer research is on behalf of the “farmers and food manufacturers who rely on traditional farming methods to produce the food that fuels America — and the world.”

But according to a recent trove of documents, the ongoing political assault on the IARC has been scripted in part by Monsanto, the St. Louis-based chemical and seed conglomerate that produces Roundup and Roundup-resistant crops.

Roundup has been cash cow for the company since the 1970s, fueling billions of dollars in annual profits. Its use has skyrocketed in recent decades since the company developed genetically modified corn and other crops that are resistant to it; it is now the world’s leading herbicide.

A growing number of individuals say that Monsanto failed to warn consumers of the dangers of using Roundup and had marketed the chemical spray as harmless to humans, while internally recommending that its own employees use gloves and protective gear. Critics say that the Roundup formula used in the U.S. also contains a surfactant that makes the herbicide far more toxic than the variation of the spray sold in the European market.

Monsanto, which merged with German multinational pharmaceutical company Bayer AG last year, is facing as many as 11,000 cases relating to glyphosate. Last year, Dewayne Johnson, a former groundskeeper now dying of cancer, was the first to win his jury trial in San Francisco state court against Monsanto, alleging that years of using Roundup contributed to his non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Johnson was awarded $289 million by a jury, though a judge later reduced the amount to $78 million. Another plaintiff, Edwin Hardeman, also alleged that he spent decades spraying the glyphosate-based weedkiller with little to no protective gear and developed the same blood cancer, won a similar case in federal court this year.

Red Cross reveals it will take YEARS for the $95million donated to ravaged communities to reach those in need

We’ve seen this before. The joke that Red Cross now is. Dodgy goings on in other disasters where the aid never gets to the affected. I’ve been told it’s now owned by the Rockefellers.

RELATED: Red Cross apologise for losing $5m of Ebola funds to fraud

From dailymail.co.uk

  • The Red Cross announced a third of their donated funds have been distributed
  • Many bushfire victims are yet to receive anything despite losing everything
  • Funds are set to be distributed over three years in ‘tailored recovery programs’
  • Bega MP Andrew Constance slammed the Red Cross, saying help is needed now
  • ‘Australians donated now so people get help now, not in three years’ – Constance

The Australian Red Cross has revealed it will likely take years for the $95million donated to bushfire victims to reach ravaged communities.

The charity said on Wednesday $30million of its Disaster Relief and Recovery Fund had been allocated to bushfire victims, but many have received nothing.

Robert Gorringe, from Ulmarra in northern New South Wales, told 7News he had been left out the donations that have so far been distributed.

‘They’ve made a lot of promises that they’re going to this, that and the other, but I’ve received nothing,’ Mr Gorringe said.

  • Reflect On:How often do you take the time to read food labels? In this day in age, if you want to be more health conscious it’s a necessary step to take.

Parents who wish to eliminate AFCs from their children’s diets face a challenge, as the current research found that about 4 in 10 packaged items in grocery store products marketed to children contain at least one AFC. Moreover, in some food categories almost all of the products contain AFCs, making it difficult for families to purchase those products without AFCs. Clinicians can educate parents about reading ingredient lists and avoiding certain products or categories, at least until companies implement policies to limit marketing of products containing AFCs…

Doubts raised about effectiveness of HPV vaccines (Medical Journal)

Search for ‘gardasil’ in categories here (left of page) to find other articles on Gardasil. There are many that give injuries and deaths for this vaccine … EWR

From eurekalert.org

A new analysis of the clinical trials of HPV vaccines to prevent cervical cancer raises doubts about the vaccines’ effectiveness. The analysis, published by the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine, assessed 12 published Phase 2 and 3 randomised controlled efficacy trials of the HPV vaccines Cervarix and Gardasil.

The analysis, carried out by researchers at Newcastle University and Queen Mary University of London, revealed many methodological problems in the design of the Phase 2 and 3 efficacy trials, leading to uncertainty regarding understanding the effectiveness of HPV vaccination.

The researchers found that the trials were not designed to detect cervical cancer, which takes decades to develop. Women in the trials were followed up for six years or less, apart from one trial extension to just under nine years. While the researchers found evidence that vaccination prevents low grade abnormal cell changes, they said this is not clinically important because no treatment is given.

Lead researcher Dr Claire Rees, of Queen Mary University of London, said: “Trials may have overestimated efficacy by combining high-grade cervical disease with low-grade cervical changes that occur more frequently but often resolve spontaneously without progressing. We found insufficient data to clearly conclude that HPV vaccine prevents the higher-grade abnormal cell changes that can eventually develop into cervical cancer.”

Dr Rees added: “Abnormal cell changes are likely to have been overdiagnosed in the trials because cervical cytology was conducted at 6-12 months rather than at the normal screening interval of 36 months. This, too, means that the trials may have overestimated the efficacy of the vaccine, again because some of the lesions would have regressed spontaneously.”

The researchers also found that the trial populations had limited relevance and validity for real world settings. The women in the trials were older than the target population.

Calling for women to still attend regular cervical screening, co-author of the study, Professor Allyson Pollock, of Newcastle University, said: “We have good evidence that cervical screening significantly reduces the risk of cervical cancer in women regardless of whether they have been vaccinated.”

We are discussing the news from this week and Monsanto tried hard to delay a trial in St. Louis from a plaintiff that wants to sue them for causing their cancer. Then the judge was asked by Monsanto to dismiss it in a summary judgment saying, “Well the EPA has already approved Roundup, therefore, there shouldn’t be any trial.”

And the judge said, “No one has ever accepted that kind of defense. No other court.” Monsanto gave no example where that was actually used in court successfully so the judge denied them the summary judgment. CONTINUE

After Senseless Murder Of Goliath, Philistines Call For Ban On Fully Automatic, High-Capacity Slings, from The Babylon Bee

Robert Gore's avatarSTRAIGHT LINE LOGIC

VALLEY OF ELAH—After local homegrown terrorist David slew Goliath with a fully automatic, high-capacity sling, Philistine activists began calling for common-sense bans on the dangerous weapons of mass destruction.

“Nobody needs a sling that holds five rocks just to go hunting or protect their sheep,” said one Philistine woman with pink hair and several face piercings. “This tragedy could have been avoided if only David were forced to use one of the old bolt-action model slings.”

Investigators believe the shepherd boy, radicalized by religious texts, built up an arsenal of approximately five hollow-point, armor-piercing rocks, “a deadly stockpile.”

“Can you imagine if he had opened fire in a crowded market or around the village well?”

Many Philistines offered “thoughts and prayers” to Dagon, but activists continue to insist “your thoughts and prayers are not enough.”

Bike Riding May Be Gentle On Climate, But Remains Extremely Dangerous To Health And Life!

Not long ago one (right wing) politician warned before the German Parliament that the bicycle as a means of transport was extremely dangerous – especially for children – and thus ought not be promoted.

“Highly impractical and dangerous”

This of course brought ridicule from the infallible leftists and greens – and yes, even from German centrists who have long become all drugged up on green and “climate protection”.

AfD parliamentarian Dr. Dirk Spaniel told before the Parliament: “Soberly considered, bicycles are highly impractical and dangerous.”

According to Spaniel, a transportation expert, a child transported on a bicycle is exposed to greater danger than in a car. On the Green Party’s vision of a bicycle utopia in Germany and the world, Spaniel mocked: “They want to draw an ideal fairy tale world here with bicycles, which do not exist in this form.”

ROLLESTON 1080 FACTORY: Has NZ’s West Coast RC been squandering ratepayer money to facilitate a private individual’s business interests?

WHY DID THE WEST COAST REGIONAL COUNCIL ACT AS BRIDGING FINANCE FOR THE 51% SHAREHOLDER OF THE ROLLESTON 1080 FACTORY? – Making a loss in the process it seems. What was wrong with using the bank?

By Carol Sawyer

The West Coast Regional Council made its initial investment in the Rolleston 1080 bait factory, Pest Control Research Ltd, in May, 2013, but did not disclose it until it was exposed by the Greymouth Star 17 months later.

See: https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm…

This investment was made despite a 2010 – 2011 survey of homes in Ross, Hokitika, Hari Hari and Whataroa finding 92.5% were against their council being involved with 1080 in any manner. (Greymouth Star, 14 November, 2017)

By 2 September, 2016, the West Coast Regional Council had sunk $2,105,000 into the Rolleston factory! It was still only making prefeed baits and Pindone at this stage, and did not get consent to make 1080 baits until May, 2018.

See: https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm…

The West Coast Regional Council has had a 49% share in the business since 2013 with, until 6 July, 2018, the 51% share being held by Malcolm Thomas, who had previously worked for the NZ government entity Landcare Research NZ Ltd.

See: https://www.stuff.co.nz/…/1080-factory-given-west-coast-reg…

(Pest Control Research Ltd at present has three directors – Michael Meehan, who is also CEO of the West Coast Regional Council, Matthew O’Brien, and John Wilson of Wanaka.) See: https://opencorporates.com/companies/nz/4460339

On 29 June, 2018, the West Coast Regional Council bought the 51% share in the factory from Malcolm Thomas, meaning they now owned the factory OUTRIGHT.

1. pest control partnership from WCRC report 1.7.17 to 30.6.18

As you can see from the above excerpt from the 2018 annual report, the stated intention was to dispose of the newly acquired 51% share at year end ( i.e. a day later, on 30 June, 2018 ?!). However this did not happen and the WCRC sold it on 6 July, 2018, one week later, to Matthew O’Brien of Kiwicare Corporation Ltd.

Why did Council buy it from Malcolm Thomas to sell to Matthew O’Brien, instead of letting the two sort it out themselves? I was told by someone in Council that it was to help out with bridging finance. Surely it isn’t the Regional Council’s job to squander the ratepayers’ money to facilitate some private individual’s business interests? PLUS… the annual report for the year ended 2018 states “Impairment on transfer held for sale – $272,549”. I am not an accountant but it would appear that the ratepayers took a loss of $272,549 over that transaction, for holding the business in its entirety for a week.

Normally if a businessman required bridging finance they would go to the bank. Was this too risky, and if so why were the ratepayers obliged to take the risk and bear the loss?

As regional councils go, $272,549 would generally not be a large amount of money, but one must remember that the West Coast Regional Council has the smallest ratepayer base in the country, with a total West Coast population of 32,000, and only approximately 10,000 ratepayers.

The “pest control” business has been a disaster financially for the West Coast Regional Council. In the 2018 annual report, the Council’s ‘Vector Control Services’ were $766,046 “over budget”. Add in the seeming $272,549 loss on the PCR Ltd transfer and that comes to $1,038,595! (To put that in perspective that is, in effect, a loss of an average $104 per ratepayer.)

In that year the WCRC declared a deficit of $859,635, instead of a budgeted surplus of $561,171.

Pest Control Research Ltd made a loss for the West Coast Regional Council in this last financial year too, and the investment amount would appear to have taken a bit of a dive (?):

“1080 FACTORY LOSS FLAGGED WITH AUDIT NZ”
by Laura Mills – Greymouth Star, Nov 1st, 2019

Audit New Zealand has flagged the West Coast Regional Council’s loss related to its investment in a 1080 factory at Rolleston. The annual independent auditor’s report has just been released. Auditors said the council had included in its financial statements unaudited information relating to an investment in Pest Control Research Limited Partnership — the 1080 plant. The auditor’s report said the council’s financial statements included the share of Pest Control’s loss of $45,574, and its investment of $943,174. “The associate (Pest Control) is not a public entity and, as such, the AuditorGeneral is not its auditor. At the date of our audit report, the audit of the associate was not completed,” Chantelle Gernetzky said. “There were no satisfactory audit procedures that we could adopt to obtain sufficient evidence to confirm the financial information relating to the associate is fairly reflected.”

1) Add in the seemingly poor business practices that led to the chemical accident on May 28 last year.

In relation to this, I was told the following by someone in the poison business:

“Adequately trained, experienced staff working under properly documented processes and wearing the correct PPE don’t poison themselves or others. I thought long ago that there would be serious consequences if a minimalist, solely profit focused company with no experience, training, procedural documentation or proper handling equipment got into the manufacture of 1080 products.”

We still don’t know the full outcome of this accident:

2) Add in seemingly poor quality products – baits past their use-by date, baits too soggy to use, and therefore condemned (and presumably buried!)

3) Add in the fact that another 1080 factory appears to be in the pipeline, further reducing PCR Ltd’s share of the poison cake – Connovation Ltd received consent to manufacture 1080 baits in March, 2019:

All in all, the pot of gold some misguided West Coast Regional Councillors envisaged from the 1080 factory, Pest Control Research Ltd, has become a bucket of slime. Best get rid of it fast, I’d say!

The Quiet Crisis: Deaths Caused By Alcoholism Have More Than Doubled, by Tyler Durden

Robert Gore's avatarSTRAIGHT LINE LOGIC

Why are so many Americans drinking themselves to death? From Tyler Durden at zerohedge.com:

Opioid overdoses may have leveled off last year after soaring over the last ten, but Americans are still dying in droves from another, far more popular substance: alcohol.

According to a series of studies cited by MarketWatch, the number of Americans drinking themselves to death has more than doubled over the last two decades, according to a sobering new report. That far outpaces the rate of population growth during the same period.

Researchers from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism studied the cause of death for Americans aged 16 and up between 1999 and 2017. They determined that while 35,914 deaths were tied to alcohol in 1999, it doubled to 72,558 in 2017. The rate of deaths per 100,000 soared by 50.9% from 16.9 to 25.5.
