In 2017 the NZ Govt effectively excluded the aerial distribution of poison bait, from the protection of the Resource Management Act – still trust them then with your safety?

Through its new rules the New Zealand Government has effectively excluded the spreading of Compound 1080 – a WHO class A1 eco-toxin – from environmental protection legislation, to increase its company profits … TV-Wild

Important information from TV-Wild by the Graf Brothers:

“New Zealand is known for its pure water, mountainous peaks and majestic scenery. Millions of tourists visit every year. They tramp the Great Walks and drink from the mountain streams – a land of milk and honey, 100% Pure! …”

However…

“There is growing concern across New Zealand about the massive use of Compound 1080 poison. Government agencies currently spread 1080 poison bait aerially, across the forests and directly into the waterways – enough poison to kill over 60 million people every year. The poison kills 1000’s of deer, and 100’s of 1000’s of other animals, birds and insects, every year.” (Explore menu at the TV-Wild link for references)

NO ONE is allowed to do an epidemiological study in NZ to see how 1080 poison may behave in our populations living within the poison and dust zones

If you draw one up [an epidemiological study] & obtain funding, you will literally be told no one else at your University will have funding, they will have it taken away and your life will be in danger. This is the absolute truth and happened in NZ … Mary Molloy

Mary Molloy, spokesperson for Farmers Against Ten Eighty ( FATE ) says :

“What is happening in this country? You have just heard that Dr Charlie Baycroft has been threatened by the Health Department for having an opinion which is not supportive of 1080, where else is this influence?

Well numerous farmers are threatened by the Biosecurity Act if they don’t permit the “controls”, poisoning etc by Tbfree. They send in big guys to stand close to you, cut you off and intimidate, this is the norm.

If you say beggar off then you are told that you are the “only ” person with concerns.

Next you are patronised, with you mean well but are not thinking or science based and this is from an organisation which continues to use antiquated testing and fails to declare us Tbfree when we effectively are.

Then a man who came from UK to do a documentary, how many years ago Terry Brownbill? He is unable to sell his doco. to the BBC because our government lied and pressured the BBC – freedom of speech, the press Nada not here for a long time.

Constant persecution of the Graf Boys and refusal to use any of their footage on TV, World recognised films can’t be shown in NZ, why?

Scientists vilified for taking a stance against 1080, called ridiculous names to vilify and destroy their credibillity – their work dries up.

DOC telling lies like 1080 breaks down into salt and vinegar like your crisps really, harmless in water, won’t kill native birds but if it does they will “bounce” back, more crap but believed by most public who live in cities.

Newspaper editors screamed at down the phone by Tb-free propagandists and threatened with the Press Council.

Photographs allegedly produced used by DOC and Tbfree to establish untruths so that people accept insidious poisoning to continue.

1080 dissolves in water, correct but it is not rendered harmless and does not breakdown like DOC and TBfree say, conditions need to be absolutely right temps of 20-30 degrees , in sunlight and still water, where is that in NZ bush?

1080 is biodegradable, rubbish hardly in NZ as organisms that can achieve that (2) are very rare in here.

1080 is safe in water, according to DOC and TBfree but MOH says it is harmful in water.

NO ONE is allowed to do an epidemiological study in NZ to see how this teratogen, class 1a poison may behave in our populations living within the poison and dust zones.

If you draw one up, obtain funding, you will literally be told no one else at your University will have funding, they will have it taken away and your life will be in danger. This is the absolute truth and happened in NZ.

This list is endless and seems hard to fathom, how can this happen in NZ? Well it can and it does, WHAT CAN YOU DO ABOUT IT? ”

From TV-Wild – “To make things worse, the Government now permits the spreading of 1080 poison bait directly into water, and without the requirement for a resource consent certificate.

So please make sure you request alternative water when your next poison drop takes place, and avoid ending up in the same boat as this community …” Clyde Graf

Planned Hikoi to Parliament from far North & far South in peaceful protest at NZ’s use of 1080 – begins 14th June

There are three significant government agencies that aerially spread 1080 poison bait across land and water in New Zealand – The Department of ConservationTB Free & OSPRI, and regional councils

Up until 2017, regional councils issued resource consent certificates to government agencies and contractors that permitted 1080 poison bait to be spread across land and directly into water. However, in 2017, the New Zealand Government changed legislation, and that legislation now permits poison bait to be aerially spread across land and directly into water, without the requirement for a resource consent certificate – effectively excluding the aerial distribution of poison bait, from the protection of the Resource Management Act.

The New Zealand Government owns Orillion, the 1080 poison factory that imports and manufactures 1080 poison, and brodifacoum cereal baits. The factory’s mission statement makes it clear that the company exists for profit. Through its new rules the New Zealand Government has effectively excluded the spreading of Compound 1080 – a WHO class A1 eco-toxin – from environmental protection legislation, to increase its company profits.

To achieve greater profits, if a government changes legislation for an activity equivalent to an act of terrorism (dropping an eco-toxin with no antidote directly into water supplies and forests which are sources of wild foods) – does that relaxed law make that activity no longer equal to an act of terrorism?

Alan Gurden and Emille Leaf, co-founders of Hikoi of a Poisoned Nation, believe that the New Zealand Government, and its poisoning agencies are indeed committing an act of terror by aerially spreading 1080 poison bait across New Zealand forests and waterways.

So the team are calling for all New Zealanders to join their peaceful hikoi. The pair will walk from each end of the country, starting with Alan at Bluff in the south, and Emille at Cape Reinga in the north, converging in Wellington. Alan will begin his march on the 15th of June, and Emille will begin his march on the 14th of June, 2018. The pair, with their supporters, will converge at Parliament, in Wellington, where the Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has agreed to meet them.

The men believe thousands of people will join the march by the time they reach Parliament.

Correspondence from OSPRI on their deliberate release of TB infected possums

OSPRI RESPONSE TO RECENT QUESTIONING RE CLARENCE RESERVE, MARLBOROUGH, IN RELATION TO AERIAL 1080 POISONING

Carol Sawyer writes: “This correspondence was sent to me by a Facebook friend last night and I felt it was worth posting in its entirety. It includes, for example, such questions as whether any rat and/or possum population assessment was carried out on the Clarence Reserve – either before or after the Oct 2016 aerial 1080 poison drop.

Nick Hancox, OSPRI Policy Advisor, is clearly rattled by reference to their release of deliberately Tb-infected possums.
He says below (6 July, 2017) “In closing I ask you to note that the deliberate release of TB-infected possums (for research purposes) was into a small area of the Orongorongo Valley, where TB in possums was already chronic and at high prevalence. The experimental release was immaterial in regard to disease risk and prevalence in the area. Unfortunately this matter has been the subject of a number of ill-founded and frankly mischievous pubic statements and claims.”

He appears to be denying the same thing was done at Muzzle Station in the Clarence Reserve. Well it was!

So I have also included earlier correspondence I had myself with OSPRI (April 2016) re deliberately infected possums released on Muzzle Station. Muzzle Station leases about 8,000 ha of the Clarence Reserve.”

RE DELIBERATELY INFECTING POSSUMS WITH TB (Carol’s correspondence referred to above)

I had a phone conversation in April, 2016, with Phillip Dawson, Operations Extension Officer for OSPRI NZ Ltd in Hamilton and he sent me this email

“Hello,

Links below might help to explain the release of TB infected animals for research, as we discussed over the phone.

Release of tb possum in Orongorongo valley https://www.tbfree.org.nz/research-work-vital-to-achieving-…

Muzzle station research https://www.landcareresearch.co.nz/…/how-does-chronic-tb-af…

Not sure of how many more of these might have been done but all would have been under a controlled conditions where TB animals can be traced and removed and where TB is already in wildlife in the area.

Regards, Phil”

I asked Phil if he thought they would kill all the remaining possums with the 1080 drop and he said they would kill 90% of the possums and eventually do two more drops and get the rest!

RECENT CORRESPONDENCE WITH OSPRI :

Information request to TBfree

Sent: Monday, 3 April 2017 6:03:33 p.m.
Subject: TBfree Contact Us Form

Ka Whata Tu o Rakihouia Conservation Park, including the hunting area known as Clarence Reserve, near Kaikoura, South Island was subjected to aerial 1080 poisoning on the 16 Oct 2016 as part of the agency TB Free’s ‘pesticide control’.
An OIA response from TBFree informed me that the rationale for the operation was because 10 pigs over 2 years were found with TB and that there had been ‘an assumption’ (scientific knowledge unknown) that possum were therefore carrying it too.
Recent OIA results from DoC’s aerial 1080 poison drop at Makarora Valley, South Island revealed that no possum count had been undertaken at all and that rat population assessments revealed very low levels of rats.

With this in mind, I am interested to know the following:
Whether any rat and/or possum population assessment was carried out at Ka Whata Tu o Rakihouia Conservation Park – either before or after the Oct 2016 aerial 1080 poison drop. Please provide detailed methodology and results of these assessments (if they exist).
I understand that there is a current proposal for a further 44,000 hectares adjacent to the Ka Whata Tu o Rakihouia Conservation Park to be aerial 1080 poisoned later in 2017 – The Clarence River reserve. Can you explain why this proposal does not currently appear on DoC Pesticide Summary Interactive map? Can you clarify where such information might be readily available to the public and tourists translations if required?
Finally, can you please provide full details of the rationale for this proposed 1080 poison operation at Clarence Reserve and whether this is at all connected to the 10 wild pigs contained in the previous rationale? Again, I need measurement and assessment (methodology, results) of rats and possum populations within this specific area within the last 5 years (if this exists).

For the purposes of this OIA I confirm I am an NZ resident.

Dear ………….

I reply to your emailed information request of 3 April 2017 (copied below) as follows:

TBfree NZ completed aerial 1080 baiting for possum control over part of Ka Whata Tu o Rakihouia Conservation Park on 16 October 2016, as part of our Kowhai Swyncombe operation.

Prior to that operation, possum density within the target area had been estimated (in 2014) using Bite Mark Index methodology. This returned a mean Bite Mark Index (BMI) of 12%. Details of the methodology are available at http://www.npca.org.nz/…/a1_possum%20monitoring_2015-nov_lr….

Post-operational monitoring of possum density has not been carried out for the Kowhai-Swyncombe operation. It is our normal practice to monitor possum densities no earlier than 2-3 years after aerial control operations. This later monitoring is more useful, in that it provides an indication of any population recovery and thus allows us to begin the process of monitoring the need for further control work.

Information provided to you on 13 March 2017 (as attached) on findings of TB infected pigs was in relation to TBfree’s planned 2017 Clarence Reserve operation. This operation was originally planned to commence from 1 July 2017. However we are currently negotiating timing of the operation with affected landowners, which is likely to result in a later start date for this operation, possibly in November.

We have no possum monitoring results from the Clarence Reserve operational area. Possum numbers are assumed to be high enough to warrant control, because of the lack of previous possum control in the area. As previously advised to you, the history of TB in both livestock and wild pigs from the area is strongly indicative of TB infection in possums.

We do not monitor rat populations associated with TB possum control operations unless this is specifically required by the Department of Conservation.

DOC Pesticide Summary information for the Clarence Reserve Operation will appear after DOC has been formally notified of a detailed operational plan. This requires consent and boundary agreements to be finalised with affected and neighbouring landowners. Negotiations towards this are still in progress, so the Pesticide Summary may not appear for another month or more. Formal prior notification of the operation – as required under the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act – involves a number of steps, including:

· Written notification and visits to all land occupiers within and adjacent to the control area

· Written notice to known likely users of the area, such as hunting and outdoors groups and clubs, concession holders and guides

· A public meeting in Kaikoura which will be advertised

· Notices in local newspapers

· Signposting at all likely access points

Attached for your information is a factsheet for the Clarence Reserve Operation, which will be distributed as part of the above notification. The factsheet for last year’s Kowhai-Swyncombe operation is also attached.

Yours sincerely

Hello again Nick.

Can you please inform me as to why the Clarence River area cattle herd apparently historically displaying bTb has not been culled? Whilst travelling in this area last month, it was obvious that cattle were being walked down public highways through traffic and other contamination risks.

It seems blatantly obvious to me that with no possum assessment or monitoring done and no changes to the way cattle are transported through the area, and no culling of infected herds, that the situation will remain the same.

This cycle of aerial poisoning without scientific rationale – especially when elsewhere possum are being deliberately infected with Tb and released into the environment – is unsustainable and the Directors of Ospri & Doc will now become accountable.

Your response?

Dear……

Without knowing exactly which cattle were being moved where, it is difficult for me to comment. However when cattle are driven along roads, this is usually to move them from one paddock to another within their home farm. This in itself would not create risk of infection spreading to other cattle herds, and in the Clarence Reserve locality, wildlife TB will be also be present, so local droving of cattle along roads would not create any additional disease transmission risks. There are strict controls on movement of cattle from infected herds to live sale or to other herds, and in most cases movement direct to slaughter is the only realistic option. Transmission of TB from cattle to humans (other than by drinking unpastuerised milk from a cow with advanced tuberculous mastitis, or through close and confined contact such as in a milking shed) is extremely unlikely.

TB-infected herds are subject to regular TB tests and all test-positive animals are culled. This usually sufficient to eradicate TB from herds after a few whole-herd tests, unless the herd is exposed to re-infection from wildlife. In the latter case a regular test and slaughter regime can at least keep infection within the herd down to a level where continuing to maintain the herd is feasible and economic.

Whole herd slaughter is an option in some cases but it makes little sense where re-infection from wildlife is likely, as any replacement herd would soon become infected as well.

You can find details of herd testing and movement control policies in our National Operational Plan at http://www.tbfree.org.nz/national-operational-plan.aspx

In closing I ask you to note that the deliberate release of TB-infected possums (for research purposes) was into a small area of the Orongorongo Valley, where TB in possums was already chronic and at high prevalence. The experimental release was immaterial in regard to disease risk and prevalence in the area. Unfortunately this matter has been the subject of a number of ill-founded and frankly mischievous pubic statements and claims.

Poison just lying around in the bush alarms overseas visitor – in same area the pig that poisoned the Putararu family came from

Thanks to Carol Sawyer & Australian visitor, Mark Slater for this compilation of facts about the apparent carelessness around the spread, storage & care of poison in our bush by NZ’s Department of Conservation. This article is about Pindone being left lying around, however the before & after storage & care of 1080 pellets after drops has also frequently been called into question by visitors, by locals who observe while hunting, tramping, trapping and so forth and by folk whose pets have been poisoned inadvertently. Watch carefully if you are tramping, hunting or just enjoying the scenery in NZ. What I find most disturbing is the number of comments I’m seeing on forums and feedback from tourists is that they don’t see many birds, just as Mark has commented here in this article. See our pages on suspected poisonings from such at the 1080 pages (main menu). (For other 1080 articles use the search box or ‘categories’ – left of news page). And if you have incidents where you’ve noticed this poison lying around, a lack of signage to warn the public, or if you’ve had your own farm animals or pets poisoned, record it and send it to me if you’d like it published. EnvirowatchRangitikei

“It should be pointed out that this is the area where the pig that poisoned the Putaruru family last year came from (see map). That was not Pindone poisoning, but almost certainly 1080 poisoning, but it shows how dangerous this Pureora Forest Park and our other wild places have become.”

Australian, Mark Slater, was in NZ last month hunting. He went on a hunting trip in Pureora Forest Park, with his son and three of his son’s Kiwi mates.

(Pureora Forest Park is in the North Island and straddles the Hauhungaroa and Rangitoto ranges west of Lake Taupo and east of Te Kuiti.)

I spoke to Mark today. He told me they were given permission to enter the Park through a farmer’s property and tramped for four and a half days, from one side to the other, where a vehicle was waiting to pick them up. They followed tracks with pink, yellow and green markers – see photo. All the tracks had names ( like Grassy Track, etc ).

Mark said ” The forest didn’t seem alive at all. I was last here three years ago and there were heaps of wood pigeons (Kereru) but this time I only saw two. We only saw 6 deer in four days.”

On Day 3 they came across two drums of Pindone Poison. They are 44 gallon drums (205 litres) and looked as though they had obviously been there for some time. One was standing up but the bottom was rusting out so it was leaking, and the one pictured, also rusting with the lid open, was lying on its side. The Pindone was in white hessian-look plastic but the bag was full of water. The poison was all wet and soggy. Mark said if the water is getting in, then there must be a hole in the bags, so it will be leaking out onto the ground.

He was quite shocked but he said the Kiwis were reasonably blasé about it. (We have become so used to the irresponsible behaviour of our Dept of Conservation !)

Mark says “I was more shocked that I was drinking the water downstream ! I thought hunters should know.”

****************************************************

Since I posted this, Roy Hollister has provided the attached photo ( taken 13/10/ 2016 ) of abandoned bait stations in Pureora Forest Park. I asked if any poison was still in them but he says there was no sign of poison residue in any of the traps – how slack, though, to leave piles like that lying around in the bush !
Roy says “I’d say looking at the leaf litter on top of them they had been there 5 or more years. They are next to the Kitemairangi Road which takes you up to the Kitemairangi loop track in Piropiro flats, South Pureora Forest Park. We witnessed the 1080 drop there a few years back The decline in bird life and morning chorus was outstanding. We were in the forest 3 months after the drop and still found baits on the ground.”
Roy adds ” The abandoned bait stations were still there as of April 11, 2018 “.

*******************************************************

It should be pointed out that this is the area where the pig that poisoned the Putaruru family last year came from ( see map ). That was not Pindone poisoning, but almost certainly 1080 poisoning, but it shows how dangerous this Pureora Forest Park and our other wild places have become.

RELATED – A 1080 POISON DROP IN PUREORA FOREST PARK – VIDEO BY THE GRAFBOYS:

The NZ Doctor threatened by the Ministry of Health says NZ’s 1080 ‘Battle for the Birds’ seems more like a mad scientist experiment to kill off every living thing

Here is recent communication from Dr Charlie Baycroft posted by Carol Sawyer. He has been threatened with prosecution by the Ministry of Health for suggesting folk have before and after 1080 tests if they are worried about being affected by a 1080 poison drop. FYI if you are unfamiliar with the non-mainstream science & dialogue on 1080, see our 1080 pages for links & particularly watch the 4x international award winning film  ‘Poisoning Paradise’ by NZ’s GrafBoys, a film the NZ government doesn’t want you to see. For more information on previous suspected poisonings by 1080 see this page. Search categories (left of page) for other recent 1080 articles or use the search box.  The following three articles are of particular relevance to the info below about and by Dr Baycroft. The second one describes the concerns another NZ Medical Doctor had about 1080 poisoning that went unrecognized by the authorities:

1. Banned in most countries & classified by WHO as ‘Highly Hazardous’… 1080 is a broad-spectrum poison that kills ALL oxygen-breathing animals and organisms – Dr Meriel Watts

2. Could this Healthy 23 Year Old’s Cardiac Arrest Have Been Caused by Exposure to 1080? … We Will Never Know Because Incredibly, the NZ Lab Lost Her Heart!

3) TWO SCIENTISTS WHO REVIEWED MORE THAN 100 OF DOC’S SCIENTIFIC PAPERS SAY: “THERE’S NO CREDIBLE SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE SHOWING ANY SPECIES OF NATIVE BIRD BENEFITS FROM 1080 DROPS”

EnvirowatchRangitikei

“On the 1080 front, the battle to save the birds seems more like a mad scientist experiment to kill off every living thing, including birds, in our environment. 1080 also Kills People !”… “no other nation on earth would consider doing it” …. Dr Charlie Baycroft

THREATS AND BULLYING BY THE NZ MINISTRY OF HEALTH

(see previous article at link)

Dr. Charles Baycroft says :

“Hi From Singapore.

It was really satisfying to meet and teach so many Therapists in Scandinavia about Gait Optimization and receive such a good response.

On the other hand, I have also received a very threatening letter from the NZ Ministry of Health stating that I might be prosecuted and fined $10,000.00 because I have said that I believe the irresponsible and unwarranted spreading of deadly 1080 poison in New Zealand poses a threat to human health. I am wondering what part of the word poison the NZ Ministry of Health does not understand and why they are not as or more concerned than I am.

Apparently, I am not supposed to have any opinions about human health because I do not hold a current practising certificate. That’s right I do not have a current practising certificate because I gave it up myself when I sold my Riccarton clinic.

For the information of the Ministry of Health and anyone else who might not realize it, one’s intelligence, knowledge and experience in Medicine does not expire because you stop paying an annual fee to prescribe drugs and bill the government. Duh?

I am taking legal advice and have asked the MOH if they will agree to allow their response to be made public because I feel that I am being threatened and bullied for caring about the health and lives of my fellow citizens. Watch this space.

On the 1080 front, the battle to save the birds seems more like a mad scientist experiment to kill off every living thing, including birds, in our environment. 1080 also Kills People !”

A retired NZ Medical Doctor who recommended before & after 1080 medical testing to the public has been threatened with prosecution by the Ministry of Health

So … the people entrusted with the oversight of your health, are not keen about you being proactive yourselves about possible 1080 poisoning? Remember how they missed the required time frame for testing the poisoned Putaruru family? When Doctors were saying it was likely 1080? Go figure. Big thanks to Dr Baycroft for sharing his medical expertise with us, and to Carol Sawyer for drawing our attention to this.

From Carol Sawyer

Dr. Charlie Baycroft, retired medical practitioner, comments today:

“Interesting that I just received a letter from the Ministry of Health threatening to prosecute and fine me $10,000 for having an opinion without a current practising certificate. I have asked for their agreement to show this threatening letter to the media. Seems like the Ministry supports poisoning more than health. My reply was not very polite. This country is being run by fools. It is time for the people to demand their freedom back.”

*****************************************

I posted the attached newspaper advertisement ( which is presumably the opinion the Ministry of Health is referring to ) on Facebook on April 8, with this comment :

“VERY IMPORTANT ADVERTISEMENT IN ‘THE NEWS” ( WESTPORT ), 6 April, 2018 – 1080 DROP “BEFORE AND AFTER” MEDICAL TESTS.

It is good to know what tests to ask our doctors for before a 1080 poison drop…. at last !

Then, after the poison drop, and exposure to it, get yourself tested really quickly.. that is very important as you can see stated here.

Make sure you have a urine sample kit at home, would be my suggestion.

Even if you just think dust may have drifted over you, or your home… get yourself to the doctor’s and don’t leave until you have the tests !!!”

The Levin 1080 fire: Part 2 (Kapiti Independent)

A follow up-article from Kapiti Independent News on the 1080 fire in Levin. Part 1 is here.

We first reported on this event in Levin on Feb 22nd & again on March 8th. At the time it was being discussed on a Facebook 1080 forum, a man reported the health effects he had been experiencing. I did exchange words with him then, inquiring further of his experience however he stopped responding to my messages.   EnvirowatchRangitikei

Where a substantial amount of hazardous substances are stored, the Health and Safety at Work (Hazardous Substances) Regulations 2017 state that it is the responsibility of the person conducting a business or undertaking (PCBU), to ensure that a full risk assessment is carried out by Fire & Emergency NZ.

Outcomes from these risk assessments include ensuring that

  • crucial signage is erected around the storage areas
  • safe drainage facilities are available to prevent contamination of waterways.

In theory, these formalised procedures are overseen by the local District Health Board’s Chief Medical Officer, who, in the event of a fire or other emergency such as an earthquake, assess the risks to nearby residents and workers from any toxic smoke and fumes and if necessary, instigate the pre-arranged evacuation plan.

If you love spraying Roundup around your farm or property, you really should watch this documentary

Kiwis love this product. They spray it everywhere, on their sections, garden edges, berms, parks, schools, their gardens even ready for new planting. And farmers, it’s whole fields since the Ag text books recommend it. Even though it’s produced large tumours in lab rats (independent research). Please read our Glyphosate pages on all of the above. You will be surprised. Farmers were told it was ‘safe as houses’ virtually.

Monsanto’s controversial past combines some of the most toxic products ever sold with misleading reports, pressure tactics, collusion, and attempted corruption. They now race to genetically engineer (and patent) the world’s food supply, which profoundly threatens our health, environment, and economy. Combining secret documents with first-hand accounts by victims, scientists, and politicians, this widely praised film exposes why Monsanto has become the world’s poster child for malignant corporate influence in government and technology.

“The most toxic chemical we’ve ever had in our environment” – Dr Don Huber

From greenmedinfo.com

When one of our world renowned professors uses the term “horrifying” in speaking about the widespread use of a chemical in our food supply, the prudent person would sit up and take notice.

That’s exactly the word Dr. Don Huber used. But are we listening? Calling glyphosate“the most toxic chemical we’ve ever had in our environment, he says that “future historians may well look back upon our time and write, not about how many pounds of pesticides we did or did not apply, but about how willing we were to sacrifice our children and jeopardize future generations for the massive experiment we call genetic engineering that is based on failed promises and flawed science, just to benefit the bottom line of a commercial enterprise.”

Two scientists who reviewed more than 100 of DoC’s scientific papers say: “There’s no credible scientific evidence showing any species of native bird benefits from 1080 drops”

Here is an article from 2007, and the drops continue, in spite of the clear scientific evidence it is not beneficial to our ecosystem.

“We have audited Department of Conservation scientific research and produced an 88-page monograph reviewing more than 100 scientific papers.

The results are startling and belie most of the department’s claims.

  • First, there is no credible scientific evidence showing that any species of native bird benefits from the dropping of tonnes of 1080 into our forest ecosystems
  • Second, considerable evidence exists that DoC’s aerial 1080 operations are doing serious harm”Quinn and Patricia Whiting-O’Keefe

Scientists, Quinn and Patricia Whiting-O’Keefe: “Poison facts belie the claims”

routeburn4.jpg
NZ drops into its forests about  4,000 KG of pure 1080 per year, enough to kill 20 million people [Photo: Clyde Graf, from a 1080 drop at Makarora]

There is now a familiar litany of scientifically insupportable claims about what great things aerial 1080, a universal poison, is doing for our forest ecosystems. The people of New Zealand have a right to know the truth about what the scientific evidence shows.

We have audited Department of Conservation scientific research and produced an 88-page monograph reviewing more than 100 scientific papers.

The results are startling and belie most of the department’s claims.

Copy of kepler track.jpg
The oxymoron that DOC’s signage is

First, there is no credible scientific evidence showing that any species of native bird benefits from the dropping of tonnes of 1080 into our forest ecosystems, as claimed by the department and Kevin Hackwell. There is certainly no evidence of net ecosystem benefit.

fwdfwdockills7outof9kea7
1080 is killing large numbers of native species

We have repeatedly challenged DoC and Mr Hackwell, a representative of the Forest and Bird Society, to come forward with the hard scientific evidence for their “dead forest” claims. They have not.

Second, considerable evidence exists that DoC’s aerial 1080 operations are doing serious harm, as one would expect, given that 1080 is toxic to all animals. It kills large numbers of native species of birds, invertebrates and bats.

Moreover, most native species are completely unstudied. In addition considerable evidence shows there are chronic and sublethal effects to vertebrate endocrine and reproductive systems, possibly including those of humans.

Considerable evidence demonstrates that DoC’s aerial 1080 operations are doing serious harm.  Photos: Upper (Tomtit in hand) by Clyde Graf

Dead birds found over a few acres, after 270,000 hectare aerial 1080 poison drop, Kahurangi National Park, 2014. This was the first year of DoC’s “Battle for our Birds” drops.

Third, DoC claims that one can drop food laced with 1080, a universal poison (World Health Organisation classification “1A extremely hazardous”) indiscriminately into a semi-tropical forest ecosystem and only negatively affect one or two target “pest” species. That is counterintuitive and scientifically improbable.

Fourth, as far as we can determine no other country in the world is doing (or has ever done) anything remotely similar – mass poisoning of a semi-tropical ecosystem on the scale that the department is now doing to ours.

Fifth, and perhaps most disturbing, is that what the department-sponsored research shows has been habitually misrepresented – entirely unjustifiable assertions regarding 1080’s benefits and lack of harm.

Statements like those of Mr Hackwell that the forests will be “dead” without poisoning them with 1080, and from John McLennan (Landcare Research) and Al Morrison (then Director General of DoC) that 1080 is existentially necessary to Kiwis is pure demagoguery and scientific nonsense.

What is at risk by continuation of this extraordinary practice – and it is unique in the world – is the ecological integrity of our forest ecosystems, our reputation as an environmentally sane and responsible country, and our existence as a society in which reason and rationality can triumph over bureaucratic prerogative and budgetary gain.

Since Galileo Galilee first discovered the moons of Jupiter in the 17th century, the way to resolve this kind of disagreement has been to do the experiment and examine the evidence, and that is precisely what we urge everyone to do.

Don’t believe DoC. Don’t believe Mr Hackwell. Don’t believe us – believe the evidence. To that end we will provide a copy of our report and the source scientific research papers to all who would like to read them.

The dubious justification for an imminent 1080 drop at Timaru Creek in Central Otago

“There never was, never is and never can be valid justification for mass slaughter with a universal super toxin. It is chemical warfare. It is ecocide. there is NO justification!” …   (Tom Look Stop 1080 Now FB page)

LATEST NEWS ON TIMARU CREEK AERIAL 1080 POISON DROP, LAKE HAWEA, CENTRAL OTAGO

From Carol Sawyer

After receiving an apology from OSPRI Operations Extension apparatchik, Jennifer Lawn, for saying they had found a Tb-infected ferret in the Timaru Creek 1080 drop zone in 2015-16 when in fact they HADN’T, and with that little creature being part of the justification for the aerial 1080 drop to kill possums, despite no possum monitoring having been done…. ( yes John Cleese would have had fun with this little lot ! )…Alan Galletly has sent Ms Lawn another letter. Because we will probably have to wait the standard 21 working days to receive this obviously terribly overworked poisoner’s reply, I am posting it up here now, along with the apology about the ferret.

As you can see from their printed material the justification for the 1080 drop is ” Tb ferrets ( note plural ) and pigs have recently been detected on the south eastern side”. ‘Recently’ means over two years ago, no Tb infected ferrets have been found in the drop zone, and the pig story is dubious ( see Alan’s letter ). The population of the target animal, the possum, has not been ascertained by OSPRI, who say they only have funds for post-drop monitoring, not pre-drop monitoring.

Dear Alan,

We need to correct some of the information supplied in response to your previous request.

The infected ferret was found 5km to the south of the planned aerial operation. We apologise for this error.

The correct information was used in the planning of this aerial operation. Your further requests for information have been received and we will respond as soon as possible within the required timeframes.

Yours sincerely,

Jennifer ( Lawn )

Dear Jennifer

Thank you for the update regarding the infected ferret.

You state that the correct information was used for planning of this aerial operation yet your printed material available to the public clearly states a TB infected ferret was taken from Timaru Creek.

This was also stated by OSPRI staff at the Hawea Information afternoon.

Clearly this leaves the question , What is the correct scientific information OSPRI have planned this aerial operation on? Is it based solely on the assumption the feral pigs were living in Timaru Creek ?

The assumption these pigs were infected by possum carcases solely from Timaru Creek? The assumption that there is a large population of TB infected possums in Timaru Creek?

All these assumptions aren’t enough evidence to plan an aerial poison drop on surely without solid scientific evidence to back them?

Could you please confirm the infected pigs actually came from the planned drop zone.

It has come to my attention that these pigs were shot in the vicinity of Stodys Hut which I believe is on the edge of the drop zone.

As this hut is near the ridge line there is no certainty that the pigs were in fact living in the Timaru Creek catchment but may have crossed the ridge line from Lake Hawea Station country.

The timing of when these pigs were shot also suggests this as at that time of year feral pigs prefer warmer , dryer country.

It would be unlikely for them to frequent the shady side or lower country in this catchment at this time of year.

It is clear OSPRI is assuming these feral pigs were living in Timaru Creek when in fact they may not have been correct.

Regards

Alan Galletly

Since a 1080 drop in Fiordland’s Hollyford Valleys in late 2017 the rat population has INCREASED & native birds, deer & trout are in severe decline

From Carol Sawyer

HOLLYFORD AERIAL 1080 DROP, OCTOBER 2017 – DISASTROUS RESULTS !

(These results come from inside the Dept of Conservation itself, but I doubt that they would have seen the light of day if they were not exposed here! DoC need to understand that not all their employees agree with their poisoning ways.)

29595242_2082002325413416_3111398628441912115_n

This 1080 drop in the Lower and Upper Hollyford Valleys in Fiordland, 5-6 October, 2017 has been an unmitigated disaster! The area had never been 1080 poisoned before.

Read on….

RATS :

For many years, there has been a volunteer trapping programme in place around Gunn’s Camp on the Hollyford Road. Ninety-eight traps are set along approximately 20 kms of the Hollyford Road, back into the bush a bit, from Marian Corner to Humboldt Creek and for a couple of kilometres beyond the end of the road.

These traps are set approximately 200 metres apart, and they are cleared every three weeks, weather permitting. For years, these traps have averaged a total of 6 to 12 rats every three weeks, all up.

After the 1080 drop, the next couple of trap clearances yielded very little. This is what one would expect immediately after an aerial 1080 drop.

However, now things have changed and, five months on, the rat plague that is to be eventually expected after a 1080 drop, of triple and even quadruple previous rat numbers, (not that the Dept of Conservation will publicly admit to this), has started.

Three weeks ago the traps were cleared and contained 32 rats. Interestingly, some of the traps had two rats in them, which is apparently unusual.

Last weekend’s tally was 24 rats. That equates to 54 rats in a period of 6 weeks, whereas prior to the drop one could have expected, at the most, 12 to 24 rats to be caught in that time.

Rats have NEVER been caught here in these numbers before !

Add to this the fact that the rats being caught recently are all young rats, this means that a veritable rat plague is on its way, and by the time the anniversary of this virgin 1080 drop comes around this October, a rat plague is what people in the area will be witnessing !

BIRDS :

Gunn’s camp in the Hollyford was a Kaka haven. Twenty to forty Kaka were regularly seen there, and as many as fifty were counted on one relatively recent occasion.

Moreporks ( Ruru ) abounded. One Morepork used to sit behind a generator shed there, and when the generator was turned off every night it then became very vocal. It was a loved ‘character’ of this special place.

There has not been a Morepork or a Kaka seen or heard since the 1080 drop five months ago. ( The “generator” Morepork was also obviously killed by the poison. ) Fantail numbers have taken a major dive, as the insect population has, of course, decreased and consequently the fantails are short of food.

DEER:

A local helicopter company has had reports, recently, from hunters it transports into hunting areas that deer numbers are ‘low to non-existent’ since the drop.

TROUT:

It is reported that a big pond in the Hollyford River, above Gunn’s Camp, which always had trout, now has none.

FINANCIAL COST OF THIS DISASTER :

This would be very hard to ascertain. Even an OIA request won’t do it, or at least not in the least accurately.

( Take for example the aborted 1080 operation at Makarora, Mt Aspiring National Park, in 2015, where prefeed baits were dropped, but far too late in the year and winter set in so the poison part of the operation never went ahead. The 66 tonnes of poison had to be retrucked back to the North Island and buried in a landfill (it was rumoured to be in Marton). DoC Wanaka claimed the total cost of that farce was $187,000 but figures i spent a long time working on showed the true cost to be well in excess of $1 million – even before the relocation of 1080 back for burial in the North Island ).

HOWEVER, I was told by a very reliable source ( a local helicopter pilot ) that HeliOtago received $1.2 million for this 40,000 hectare aerial 1080 drop in the Hollyford Valley, Fiordland National Park, last October. That of course was only a fraction of the total cost.

Why were the heads of NZ’s Dept. of Conservation & Hong Kong’s Goldman Sachs touring parts of Fiordland recently in a six-helicopter entourage?

Thanks to Carol Sawyer for this information.

NOTE: Here are links to this series of articles:

1) WHY WERE THE HEADS OF NZ’S DEPT. OF CONSERVATION & HONG KONG’S GOLDMAN SACHS TOURING PARTS OF FIORDLAND RECENTLY IN A SIX-HELICOPTER ENTOURAGE?

2) NEW INFO ON THE RECENT 6-HELICOPTER ENTOURAGE OVER FIORDLAND BY THE HEAD OF NZ’S DEPT. OF CONSERVATION & 30 ODD INTERNATIONAL BANKERS

3) SOUTHLAND DISTRICT COUNCIL HAS TOLD A CORRESPONDENT THAT THE RECENT HELICOPTER TOUR OF FIORDLAND BY 30 ODD INTERNATIONAL BANKERS & DOC WAS ‘PHILANTHROPIC’ … AND NARY A WHISPER FROM MAINSTREAM MEDIA?

4) DOC SAYS THE 30 INTERNATIONAL BANKERS TOURING FIORDLAND LAST MONTH WERE ABOUT RECOVERING OUR KĀKĀPŌ AND TAKAHĒ YET STILL NO MENTION IN MAINSTREAM MEDIA?

And this fly over, one week before Obama’s visit? What is going on? This entourage consisted solely of international bankers from all over the world it’s reported.

What were the heads of DoC and the ‘bank that rules the world’ out purveying pristine South Island sights for? And what does Goldman Sachs have to do with the conservation of NZ’s flora and fauna? As we found out last century, the predatory funding of the banking fraternity comes with conditions. Doesn’t bode well in my opinion.

Consider all this in light of the recent signing of the (un)modified TPPA ‘deal’ that benefits mostly corporations, the recent revelations around the upcoming Wanaka Air Show boasting ‘impressive’ global military representation, the imminent visit at the same time by Barack Obama and ‘right on cue’ Hillary Clinton and the mysterious events surrounding the 2011 Christchurch Quake and its parallels with Haiti, one could be forgiven for being somewhat suspicious of this company of people. Call me conspiratorial if you wish but add to that the fact it’s all a bit timely, especially with the fast & furious sale of vast swathes of South Island property including Otago to offshore wealthy folk who are supposedly escaping the apocalypse they believe is coming, and it’s difficult to believe it’s a case of ‘nothing doing here’. (Note, Donald Trump’s right hand man Peter Thiel has bought Damper Bay in Wanaka Otago. US news anchor, Matt Lauer has bought Hunter Valley Station, Otago). The common denominator for the better part of all the aforementioned is the US. And speaking of the US & its military (which go together like peas in a pod) I forgot to mention the discussions that have been under way for some time between DARPA (US military) & NZ Landcare Research on the proposed release of genetically modified insects. We are ‘favored’ for this ‘experiment’ because of our island status. Very handy all around. Hello guinea pigs.

NZ & the US military have been cosying up for quite a while now especially since our former ‘esteemed’ PM ‘Sir’ John (now managing other monies) spent a good part of his dubious ‘service’ oiling the US war machine. Having gone this far on topic I may as well mention it’s been said he likely profits from NZ’s debt and just hours after the Christchurch Quake signed away seabed exploration rights to the giant oil company Anadarko.

The info on the six helicopter entourage was posted on the no to 1080 use in NZ Facebook page by Carol Sawyer. The company of international bankers along with DoC’s Director General went flying over Fiordland, reliable word has it, on 14 March 2018, quoted here (with minor edits, go to the source to read the original):

“Six Squirrel helicopters were chartered from Alpine Helicopters, Wanaka. They only have five Squirrels so one was chartered in by them.

Apparently, Director-General of Conservation Lou Sanson, and presumably other DoC” people, “took a pile of international bankers on a Tiki Tour. I am told the Hong Kong-based head of Goldman Sachs was one of them.

They went to Fiordland – landing in the Murchison Mountains, (Takahe), Chalky Island (Kakapo) in Chalky Inlet, and Resolution Island in Dusky Sound.

I have also been told this helicopter operation would have cost at least $80,000 to hire. I thought DoC was short of money? Did the big bankers pay for this trip? A Squirrel helicopter seats the pilot and six passengers, so with six Squirrels that is at least 30 people involved.

In the evening they were seen landing at Manapouri, where they had their evening meal … at the Manapouri Hotel, before the trip back to Wanaka.”

Was Lou Sanson’s “great ‘success’ “ with “DoC’s Battle for the Birds program, and the importance of Predator Free 2050” part of the discussion?

Carol has noted the remoteness of the areas they viewed in their flight from Wanaka to Fiordland. Fiordland is very remote and the places they were going could not be reached by road. Resolution Island is in Dusky Sound, Fiordland and has no road access. Chalky Island is in Chalky Inlet, Fiordland and also has no road access.

The pertinent question is asked: “What the heck are we giving these rich international bankers in return … land? mining rights? our souls? …” I would concur on those questions and would place my bet on all of them. It’s been put to me before by some readers that that mining is the agenda for clearing off our lands with 1080 of all things living. There is more than one theory on that. I suspect it is multi-purpose. Personally I know of folk who have heard poison contractors boast they’ve upped the strength of 1080 in order to kill the deer. It’s working.  The wild lands are becoming less viable as sources of wild food given the risks now involved, witness the recent poisoning of the Putaruru family who ate wild boar (the authorities didn’t test for 1080 within the appropriate time frame) the green beehives seen recently by bee keepers and the poisoning of our waterways by DoC with impunity. And yes people appear to have been poisoned historically also but the authorities are very tight lipped about those occurrences and aren’t admitting a bar of it.

Returning to the TPPA & the military, looking at the big picture, hear Prof Jane Kelsey explain the global power play going on:

In New Zealand, it’s the authorities contaminating the waterways with 1080 poison & the people fighting to keep their water pure are getting arrested doing it

Despite a resolution passed by the Westland District Council in 2009, to keep the deadly pesticide-insecticide – 1080 poison – out of water catchments – ridgeline to ridgeline – the Animal Health Board breached the council’s decision, and in August 2012, poisoned the Hokitika watercatchment, again … (the GrafBoys’ channel)

New Zealand claims to be “Clean, Green and 100% Pure”. Therefore, you could be forgiven for thinking the authorities would fight against poisoning water – forest streams and water catchments. But in New Zealand, it’s the authorities doing the contaminating, and the people fighting to keep their water pure – and they’re getting arrested doing it. Despite a resolution passed by the Westland District Council in 2009, to keep the deadly pesticide-insecticide – 1080 poison – out of water catchments – ridgeline to ridgeline – the Animal Health Board breached the council’s decision, and in August 2012, poisoned the Hokitika watercatchment, again. In a recent poison drop across Westland, farmers and locals rallied for animal welfare and the right to retain poison-free water. This is their story …

Roundup EXPOSED – The truth about pesticides, disease and scientific fraud

(NaturalHealth365) Roundup is a weed killer that’s showing up in our food supply; contaminating the waterways and the air we breathe. Yet, the biotech industry – with companies like Monsanto and Dow – continue to tell us, ‘we have nothing to worry about’ – in terms of all the agricultural ingredients used today.

So, what’s the truth?

Shocking truths exposed about Roundup and our current food production techniques

Just to be clear: Roundup is the most widely used herbicide in all of human history, and while farmers and homeowners alike use it daily, this highly-toxic product carries a wide range of health hazards – which are being systematically overlooked (and ignored) by government health agencies.

DOC cowardly cover-ups exposed re:clandestine 1080 loading in Whitianga’s CBD

This is an article from Fishing and Outdoors that exposes the finer details around the assault of Graeme Sturgeon who came to observe the unloading of 1080 in the CBD of Whitianga. This is the March 2018 issue published on Mar 3, 2018.

For our coverage of this issue as it unfolded go here and here

No Govt minister would meet with a Waikato Regional Councillor & a Nelson Lawyer this week to accept an incident register on 1080 – but then the NZ Govt is MAKING 1080

There have been thousands of cases of poisoned farm animals, non-targeted wildlife, pets, and people following 1080 poison and brodifacoum aerial operations across New Zealand.

Not surprisingly, those involved with the aerial poisoning drops – our government, the Department of Conservation, TB Free, regional councils … and ironically, those that sign the drops off – the district health boards – have never compiled a register of the incidents that have taken place over the years.

So some intellects from around the country decided to put together some of the known poisoning cases, including people that have been crying out to be heard for so long.

In the following video clip lawyer Sue Grey and Waikato Regional Councillor for Taupo, Kathy White, explain how they attempted to present the poisoning register to members of parliament (on a typically windy day) …

The Levin 1080 storage fire should have been a ‘notifiable incident’ with strict health & safety procedures in place

From NO to 1080 use in NZ Facebook community

What exactly happened at the fire at the Horizons Council depot Levin, in January? We know that 1080 and other poisons were kept there. We are not told how much, although it could have been up to 100 tonnes. We know that local residents were not aware of the potential dangers of the toxic fumes that may have reached their homes. Note that the council have admitted that “1080 [poison] casing was damaged in the fire.” We also know that the local DHB and therefore the Medical Officer of Health were not informed about the fire via Fire & EmergencyNZ, nor Horizons, nor WorksafeNZ. This should have been a ‘notifiable incident’ with strict health and safety procedures in place, including an evacuation plan for nearby residents and drainage facilities for the fire equipment that prevented contamination of the water-tables.

Will this ‘investigation’ result in any changes?

Police investigation begins four weeks after fire.

An investigation into the suspicious fire at Levin’s Horizons Regional Council depot was stalled for a month due to hazardous substances.

The January fire damaged property, equipment and vehicles stored at the depot.

It was confirmed by police that the depot had been broken into and a quad bike set alight.

Controversial pest control poison 1080 was stored at the depot along with herbicides for weeds, cyanide and rabbit toxins.

Horizons chief executive Michael McCartney confirmed that a 1080 casing was damaged in the fire.

Waste Management Technical Services recently removed and disposed of the hazardous substances, allowing Police to do an internal scene examination on Tuesday.

Mr McCartney said the removal was a complex and time-consuming task but it was now completed and all poisons accounted for.

He said the hazardous substances were not removed immediately following the fire to ensure their casings did not break.

“We did not want to risk moving them until we could ensure this could be done without risk to the environment or human health.”

This whole raruraru (trouble) in Whitianga and beyond, demonstrates that the Department of Conservation is dysfunctional, and treats local residents and local government alike with arrogance.

The public experiences the Department of Conservation as a law unto itself.  It does not inform local authorities, it does not follow its own consultation guidelines, and it breaches statutes.

For example, the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act under which DoC receives consents for aerial poisoning requires :

  • caution where there is scientific or technical uncertainty ( Section 7);
  • protection of Maori taonga (Section 8)
  • and consultation ( Section  5).

A Horowhenua fire in January destroyed a Horizons storage depot containing ‘highly toxic’ 1080 pesticide

‘Highly toxic’ according to the manufacturer’s 1080 data sheet which also warns: Do not burn the product as highly toxic hydrogen fluoride gas may be released. The Horowhenua DC didn’t even know there had been a fire until one week later.

FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES:
The pellets have a low flammability risk unless pre-heated, however the thermal decomposition (burning) of products containing sodium fluoroacetate (1080) releases
hydrogen fluoride gas which is very toxic. Emergency response and firefighting measures for major fires should be taken only by trained professionals using SCBA. Evacuation of adjacent and downwind premises will be necessary in the case of large fires involving 1080 products. Hazchem is 2XE. Data Sheet

The article below doesn’t clearly state whether the baits were burned or not although it’s stated there was no risk to environment or health as “all run-off associated with putting out the fire was contained onsite”. So there was contaminated water presumably but what of the air? Was anybody reading this warned of any inherent breathing dangers during the fire? One person on social media has reported health effects including headaches, kidney pains, nausea and tiredness. I assume they wish to remain anonymous as they’ve not responded to my questions.

According to the data sheets, storers should DEFINITELY be letting people in near proximity know about stored 1080, at the very least by signage, and the Fire Chiefs should be notified so if there is a fire they won’t be endangered by 1080 contact. An OIA request by NO to 1080 use in NZ has revealed that the HDC (Horowhenua DC) did not know of the fire until a week later! (See article below). * Curious given they are all under the same umbrella.

If you live in the vicinity of where this fire took place and you have unexplained health issues from that date (19 January 2018) this could shed some light on things… you should seek medical help. Symptoms of poisoning from the data sheet are as follows:  Nausea, vomiting, tingling and numbness in face and hands, stomach pains, apprehension and anxiety. Later Symptoms: Muscular twitching, blurred vision, mental confusion. Severe Symptoms: Coma, convulsions

This all highlights the dangers of storage of this poison. Were any Horowhenua people warned that 1080 was stored in Levin? I’m keen to hear. This is particularly important if the storage site is in or adjacent to residential areas without the public knowing, as per the recent discovery in the Whitianga CBD. In that instance a person in a neighbouring house could smell the cinnamon from the baits as they were being unloaded (described in the video here), and not in accordance with DoC’s own rules.

It must be remembered that sodium monofluoroacetate (Compound 1080) is a World Health Organisation Class 1A Eco-toxin, with no known antidote, and banned in most countries.

Note to Horowhenua & Kapiti residents: There was to be an aerial drop of 1080 further south of Levin some time this month (Feb 2018) however this may not happen it seems. DoC’s website will have details of that. Educate yourself on the dangers of 1080 because mainstream is not. Watch the doco ‘Poisoning Paradise’  …  you’ll learn some truth about 1080 in our waterways and the non removal of carcasses from those by the authorities. More than just target species are killed and many folk have lost their pet dogs to 1080. See our 1080 pages and search for articles on topic under ‘categories’ at left of the front page.

Here are the articles from mainstream about the Levin fire:

NZ Herald

A fire at Horizons Regional Council’s pest control depot in Levin has sparked an investigation.

Controversial pest control poison 1080 was stored in a Levin depot that was burgled and torched last week.

The fire tore through the Horizons Regional Council depot on Thursday night, destroying equipment and melting vehicles.

Fire services put out the blaze, but police said there were also signs of a burglary.

Horizons Regional Council chief executive Michael McCartney said the council was alerted to the fire early on Friday morning.

Manawatu Detective Sergeant Philip Skoglund said someone had cut through the yard’s wire fence the same night, and the building had been forced open.

“There looks like there may have been some items removed but we are not sure what they are,” he said.

Skoglund said the burglar may have forced access to a commercial fridge but that was yet to be determined.

“At this point it looks to be suspicious,” he said.

A burglar may have forced access to a commercial fridge, but this was yet to be determined.

A neighbour said he believed that the refrigerator contained 1080 but, after questions from the Horowhenua Chronicle, McCartney confirmed on Tuesday 1080 was held in a secure pesticide store in the building, though not in the fridge.

He said Horizons was still taking an inventory of items after the fire, but “all run-off associated with putting out the fire was contained onsite and there are no environmental or health concerns”.

* Hot off the press and highly relevant as a follow-up to the Whitianga court case: An OIA response from Mid Central DHB regarding the fire in the warehouse in Levin last month, which contained 1080 poison, has revealed that the council did not know about the fire until the newspaper reports a week later! The Medical Officer of Health (who is required to make the call about whether an evacuation or other action is an advisable precaution for local residents’ safety), was therefore not even aware of the potential dangers.

Quote: ” In this particular incident, our service (DHB) was not notified by Fire and Emergency New Zealand; we became aware of the event through a subsequent media release. No information was supplied to the Medical Officer of Health at the time of the fire, and consequently no risk assessment was undertaken.”

This beggars belief at the level of incompetence that continues to put us all in danger. We do not know how MUCH poison was stored there, but under the new H&S legislation, there could have been up to 99 tonnes of cereal bait stored without any notification to Fire and Emergency NZ.

Here’s a thought: What would have happened if the 1080 poison stored at Whitianga CBD had caught light, with supermarkets, cars and houses all around it? Wouldn’t we assume that a H&S and firefighters’ protocol had been followed and an emergency call had been made to the local council and DHB Medical Officer? Time is of the essence in events like this, which can change in an instant.

Has NOTHING been learned from that tragic event in 1984 (p7 at the link) where the fire in ICI’s hazardous chemicals warehouse in Auckland caused so much harm (and maybe still is today, through contamination of the site, landfill and water)?

UPDATE:

Horowhenua’s Mayor Michael Feyen has posted on his FB page a video saying this will be investigated. He has historically been a whistleblower prior to becoming Mayor and currently, if you follow the HDC events, is frequently asked by HDC councillors to resign. Our Local Govt Watch pages provide info on that. Watch for more updates.

Clyde Graf interviews Graeme Sturgeon on the assault case the Court dismissed

Clyde Graf is with Carol Sawyer and Kathy White.

The Crown vs Graeme Sturgeon – 1080 Poison Assault – “Charges Dismissed” … here’s the post-decision video interview …

THE WORST THREE MONTHS GRAEME AND JULIE STURGEON HAVE EVER EXPERIENCED

So very, very wrong what these good people were put through.

Graeme Sturgeon is interviewed here by Clyde and Steve Graf. Frankly speaking, I feel privileged to know such amazing people.

Yet despite what Graeme and Julie have been through, as Graeme says here they will not give up the fight to save their water and wildlife.

Other heroes to me are hardworking and generous-spirited John and Denise Allen, who organised a campsite on the outskirts of Thames and set up to cater for however many people turned up – up to 300 people if necessary.

Fighting 1080 poison is fighting the NZ government. There is no environmental battle harder than that.

So much of the time it feels impossible, futile – insane even – to be trying to stop this taxpayer-funded, propagandised industry, where helicopter companies like EPRO and HeliOtago make many tens of millions every year; where senior management in DoC and OSPRI are on salaries they could never hope to replicate, even closely, in the private sector; where trucking firms like those owned by Trojan Holdings ( Northern Southland Transport, Upper Clutha Transport, Cromwell Transport ), transport all the 1080 required in the lower South Island all the way from Whanganui in the North Island to points south; where the factory that manufactures all the 1080 baits in NZ, Animal Control Products, ( trading as Orillion ), in Whanganui,, has two nominal directors – the Minister of Finance and the Minister of Agriculture – and has a chairman, Terry Murdoch, who is an owner of Christchurch Helicopters Ltd – which company has a contract with DoC re orange-fronted parakeet translocation and has Dept of Conservation written on their helicopters ! Oh, and let us not forget one of the owners of Christchurch Helicopters is national All Black hero Richie McCaw…. Carol Sawyer

Graeme Sturgeon Whitianga update: charged with assault, the case dismissed with relative media silence

Great news that this case has been thrown out. Fairly quiet from mainstream on that yesterday. An article link from this morning (21 Feb) has been published by Stuff.co.nz (see below).
Here are the updates as published at Facebook thanks to Carol Sawyer. (Go here for our previous coverage of Graeme’s story).

THAMES, COROMANDEL – GRAEME STURGEON – CASE DISMISSED !

20 Feb 2018
Perhaps everyone would like to be reminded about the Police Summary of Facts which should now be retitled the Summary of Lies ! ( Unfortunately, the aggressor, Richard Lane appears to have got away scot free).

Also, here is Graeme Sturgeon’s statement, made at the time of the assault on him by “security guard” Richard Lane :

STATEMENT BY GRAEME STURGEON RE UNPROVOKED ASSAULTS BY DoC SECURITY IN PUBLIC CARPARK, WHITIANGA CBD, 17 OCT. 2017

“Statement made after the events of Tuesday 17 th October behind Liquor King in Whitianga :
.
I was camped with four other people on a property up Kaimarama Road awaiting an 1080 Airdrop that was due to go into the area the following morning.
About eight o’clock we receive a message to say there was a strong smell of 1080 in the housing estate behind Liquor King and DOC was loading trucks with 1080 there in the middle of town.

We were anxious to get photos of such a crazy action
so I drove into Whitianga. The directions given were a bit hazy so upon spotting Liquor King I drove up the road alongside Liquor King and around the back of the building. As I turned the right angle corner at the back of the building I came upon 5 or six trucks that I had not seen until that moment.

I stopped and was in the process of taking off my seat belt when my door flew open and I was grabbed by the scruff of the neck and dragged from my vehicle. So much happened in the next few seconds that I am a bit hazy about, after receiving a brutal fist in the face. I remember a woman’s raised voice and seeing a
Security Guard standing there in front of me saying ‘Well he is bigger than me’

As my nose was bleeding I staggered back to my vehicle to get some tissues to be told that I was not getting into my vehicle as it was staying where it was until the police arrived. I was happy enough with that. I then became aware that both the inside and outside locking system of the driver’s door was broken and the door hinges appeared bent as the door would not close very well. I could not lock the door.

While we waited I was told that Diana Halstead and Dr Pond had also been assaulted as DoC Security Staff entered their vehicles and attempted to take their keys from them. The trucks reversed out from behind the building and set off up to the Kaimarama Road. The Police arrived after about an hour and went inside the building to, I presume, interview DOC Staff. It was only at that time that I realised that the building contained DOC Offices.

The Constable finally emerged and began to question us and take photos including the broken door on my vehicle and my shirt and jacket that had just about been torn from my back. He was pleasant and did a very thorough job I thought. It was agreed that we would go to Coromandel Police Station and make a detailed statement to Morrisey as soon as possible.”

Coromandel conservation group is calling for a halt to regional funding of toxin use on private land for wild animal control

IMG_8679

PRESS RELEASE:

A Coromandel conservation group is calling for a halt to regional funding of toxin use on private land for wild animal control.

The Upper Coromandel Landcare Assocation (UCLA) is asking Waikato Regional Council to suspend any further cash grants to “community” groups for placement of toxin 1080 and anticoagulant rat poisons on private properties on the peninsula.

UCLA cited a $41,000 grant to the Moehau Environment Group, a local contractor to WRC, for placement this summer of the poisons in bait stations on hundreds of hectares in Port Charles in an operation opposed by many landowners in the small community. In addition to concerns over secondary poisoning of protected native species and inhumane controls generally, local residents have objected to extreme danger from toxic animal carcasses on neighbouring properties, as well as poisons entering the food chain.

A recent memorandum from the Department of Conservation confirmed that 1080 resides in the environment and food chain after placement. The toxin has been implicated in the near-fatal poisoning of three Waikato residents after they ate wild pork.

According to UCLA spokesperson Reihana Robinson, there are safe, affordable, and acceptable alternatives to use of residual toxins, including trapping and hunting. “The $41,000 MEG grant, much of which covered 1080 poisoning on the property of the group’s own coordinator and her neighbour, is a dangerous, irresponsible, and wasteful use of regional rates dollars.”

IMG_8687

“Locals cannot walk dogs safely along the main road, children cannot safely explore up the Tangiaro Valley, families can not harvest nutritional wild food, and unsuspecting landowners may wind up with hazardous toxins on their own properties,” Robinson said. “And as for our tourism-based economy, visitors are being greeted with kilometres of skull-and-crossbone warning signs instead of the pristine bush they expected.”

“We are not talking conservation estate or protection of crown land. This is public funding of dangerous poisons on private properties within metres of property lines and roads, with toxins potentially migrating onto other people’s land.”

UCLA notes that hundreds of thousands of ratepayer dollars are being directed by the regional council this term to so-called “community groups” for possum, rat, and mustelid control with little or no accountability and without wider community support.

“It’s easy for council staff to farm out control work with a few big cheques to a few eco-contractors,” Robinson said. “But unfortunately, it is harmful not only to the environment, but to ratepayers and residents, and to regional council’s own relations with the wider community.”

Stop on the Kapiti 1080 Drop?

That balanced biodiversity (Kapiti Island’s) is still a dream on the mainland, but in the first months of 2018, it will come significantly closer after a TBfree aerial 1080 possum control operation knocks down possums and rats across a large chunk of TB vector risk area – 11,000 hectares of bush and forest along the foothills of the Tararua Ranges, between the Akatarawa Road in the south and the Otaki River in the north. Michelle Edge OSPRI CEO December  2017

Singer Song-writer releases anti-1080 song “Poison Rain”

‘Poison Rain’ calls for an end to 1080 poison and other rodenticides in New Zealand, poison that is banned in many countries. The song asks for a better solution to be found, one that does not involve tons of poison continually tipped on New Zealand’s native forests.

‘Poison Rain’ calls for an end to 1080 poison and other rodenticides in New Zealand, poison that is banned in many countries. The song asks for a better solution to be found, one that does not involve tons of poison continually tipped on New Zealand’s native forests.

The song now has its own Facebok page where you can see the music video: https://www.facebook.com/stopthedropnz/videos/287934298401454/

To learn more about eh issue of 1080, one option is to watch the film Poisoning Paradisehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQRuOj96CRs

Aly Cook became intent on looking into 1080 poison after a conversation she had with friends whofeatured on a TV Wild Video. New Zealand farmers were interviewed in the video who had all suffered stock losses from 1080 poison drops. These farmers had been instructed by various government departments to put their compensation payouts down to ‘track maintenance’ or ‘stock food’, after their animals had tested positive for 1080 poisoning. Other farmers were asked to sign confidentiality clauses. watch the video here

This conversation lead Aly to look more into safe ways to reduce the number of stoats, rats and possums in the NZ bush. If there was nothing to hide, the farmers would not have been instructed to lie on an invoice. The more Aly looked into it, the more oxymorons she found. DOC claims 1080 did not kill invertebrates… yet 1080 was developed as an insecticide.

Aly says … “There are lies everywhere covering up, for example, the recent ‘so called’ botulism case in which a family who had consumed wild pork were hospitalised due to life-threatening illness.

(Here is the interview with the actual family and excerpts from their medical notes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6i4pZ5RYI4&t=570s)

The hunter’s dog died the day the wild pork was collected . After eating the pork it made the family so violently ill that they were thrashing around and the hospital staff had to strap them into their beds for days”.

The family tested negative for botulism yet they were not tested for 1080 poisoning until 18 days later following a lawyer being engaged by the family. I urge kiwis to watch this documentary and also think about what this is doing to our clean and green image. We have to find a better solution to pest control than this”.

Rangitikei farmers’ ‘spray and pray’ activity is grossly polluting the waterways

Kiwis love herbicides and poisons, particularly Kiwi farmers. They spray roundup over their pastures because the text books recommend it and they believe it’s safe. They won’t read the independent research either. Not in my experience. Still that’s what we’re up against. The corporations particularly Monsanto in this instance, have control of the media so they control the public perception. Their methods aren’t working & they’re not sustainable witness the filthy state of our waterways now. Can’t even swim in them any more. A total shame & total hypocrisy to be calling our country clean and green. See our Glyphosate pages.
EnvirowatchRangitikei

From Radio NZ

An intensive farming practice taking off in the Rangitikei, known locally as spray and pray, is an environmental disaster waiting to happen, according to Fish and Game.

The method involves aerially spraying steep hill country with herbicide, then sowing a winter crop and aerially spraying with fertiliser.

Stock are then fed in mobs on the crop during winter, which strips it back to bare land.

It has locals, including farmers, worried about what it is doing to waterways, particularly the protected Rangitikei River, which is one of 15 rivers in the country with a water conservation order on it.

Fish and Game chief executive Bryce Johnson said he first heard about the practice from a fishing guide in Rangitikei, who was noticing the river was clouding with sediment on fine days and becoming increasingly discoloured.
