“Twenty years of 1080 in the Haast Valley has killed our kea population”

By PAMELA ADAMS   SUNDAY, OCTOBER 28, 2018

WHERE HAVE ALL THE KEA GONE?

“On the night of the 30th November [the day of the last 1080 drop] a single kea was heard screaming in the trees behind the township. After that the five kea in Haast township were never seen again. Two years later there are still no kea in Haast Township … twenty years of Compound 1080 in the Haast Valley has killed our kea population … and on the 15th November 2018 the Department of Conservation plan to aerially drop Compound 1080 poison again on Haast……”

The photo above is the saddest thing I have seen in years – taken today – a flax bush in full flower and not a single kea to be seen.

Back in November 2010 the flax bushes in Haast township were filled with the noise and antics of kea fighting over the sweet nectar. One evening I saw seven kea in one bush. The next photo was taken on the 10th November 2010……..

By April 2016 we had five kea permanently living in the town – this photo below was taken on the 12th April 2016………..

But on the 30th November 2016 the Department of Conservation as part of their Battle for our Birds campaign aerial spread Compound 1080 near Haast township (True Left Haast drop zone)……..

On the night of the 30th November a single kea was heard screaming in the trees behind the township. After that the five kea in Haast township were never seen again. Two years later there are still no kea in Haast Township ………..

So the flax bush flowers and there is nothing to eat its sweet nectar. Compound 1080 does not increase native bird numbers………… Sixty years of Compound 1080 has not saved New Zealand wildlife…….. twenty years of Compound 1080 in the Haast Valley has killed our kea population………..

And on the 15th November 2018 the Department of Conservation plan to aerially drop Compound 1080 poison again on Haast……

Why? There is nothing left to kill.

A 1080 poison drop in the Manawatu Gorge is imminent

NOTE re updates: I’m getting updates from people so will add them as I hear. I’ve added info provided via social media about avenues of possible action for Iwi anywhere in NZ who do not want aerial 1080 drops. See below.

Re the FB Share button: I’ve twice had to edit & reinstate it. Sometimes it appears only on the news page when you scroll right down to the article, but not when you’ve clicked on the link to the article. This happens at times with controversial posts. Just a heads up in that you may need to share from the url.

This drop is to take place between October 23 and December 7, or thereabouts depending on the weather. (UPDATE: the walking tracks are closed until after the drop apparently).

Another local who has walked the Gorge area for 20 years says it has always been trapped or bait stationed (see her full comment at the end). This was confirmed by a second person.

If you do live in the Manawatu, please do watch Poisoning Paradise for the information DoC or the Manawatu authorities won’t be telling you.

Poisoning Paradise is a locally made documentary that has won no less than four international environmental film awards, however your Government has banned it from NZ television. I wonder why? Perhaps they don’t want you to see all the evidence and  make up your own mind about its safety? You can watch it at this link.

Walking tracks will be closed the article says, however if you walk on them when they open, do be on the lookout for stray baits as they are not always picked up by DoC other observers have noted (as they should be). We have posted photographs of kids standing by them on walking tracks elsewhere in the country. Likewise, don’t take your pets there, dogs are very susceptible to 1080 poisoning and around 65+ dogs die of it each year. It also takes a very long time for poisoned animals to die. A veterinarian says death from 1080 is like two days of electrocution. There is no antidote to 1080 either & a retired NZ Doctor has warned us if you die from it nobody will know because the MoH is bullying Doctors into not testing for it. This is evidenced going by the apparent cover up on the recent poisoning of the Putaruru family, and the same following the death of the 23 year old US hiker in the South Island in 2006 after which the NZ lab lost her heart.

Copy of Copy of whitewash-615907_1920.jpg

Remember the Government changed the rules so that 1080 can now be dropped directly into your waterways without a resource consent from regional councils. And yet the warning on the manufacturer’s data sheet clearly says do not drop it into waterways. Then there was a former co leader of the Green Party who expressed concern about the testing of post 1080 drop water. The frequency of finding 1080 in water samples is at odds with independent testing he said. Official figures say 1080 is detected only 3% of the time however, from the calculations of an independent scientist that incidence is closer to 60%.

Even if I did believe the official info from DoC on how safe 1080 is in our drinking water, I still would not be drinking it any time soon. Who in their right mind wants to ingest a deadly Class 1A ecotoxin at any stage or amount of dilution?

Stay safe people & look at all the information, not just the official dialogue.

Postscript:

Mary Lewis, a Palmerston North person has written to me stating:

I have walked the Manawatu Gorge Area for about 20 years and have never seen deforestation or signs of possums or rats in day time or night. One of the main reasons for this is that the area has been continually trapped and bait stationed. There are plenty of birds when the food is available. Kererus feed off the Cabbage tree flowers and Nikau flowers and Berries and Tuis are there in number when Ratas and other flowers are available. Ruru and fantails need the insects and 1080 is going to put the whole ecosystem out of wack and fall into the contributing streams of the Manawatu River. DOC knows of the pain and destruction that 1080, especially aerial drops, make on our country, but just ignore any science or facts that go against their actions. Why are they targeting a family friendly track, where people do take their dogs on leashes. This is our country not DOC’s or the Government’s, so why don’t we have a say against poisoning our land.

From social media pages, possible avenues for action for Iwi regarding 1080 aerial drops:

DoC admits their 1080 rat control operation only lasts 3-6 months … ANNUAL poisoning now for Heaphy Vlly & Coast

From Carol Sawyer
1 Nov 2018

DoC ADMITS RAT CONTROL ONLY WORKS FOR 3 – 6 MONTHS !!
HEAPHY VALLEY AND COAST – TO HAVE ANNUAL AERIAL 1080 POISONING

I have been sent this letter with the comment “Look at this Carol, this is the first time I have seen DOC admit that the poison only holds back numbers of rodents for 3-6 months!”

It is indeed the first time they have admitted that! DoC say in their letter :

“The Department estimates that each pest control operation will provide a window for native species to breed and thrive that lasts around three to six months before rat numbers start to build up again.”

Look at the attached graph… only five months after the 1080 drop, the rat numbers had become HIGHER than they were at the time of the drop and were continuing to climb.

The 20,667 ha area extends over the western end of the Heaphy track, and the drop will take place between October and December, 2018.

**************************************************************

“7 September, 2018

Dear……

This letter is to let you know abut changes to pest control work happening in the Heaphy Valley and along the Heaphy Coast in the coming year.

The Department is moving to trial an annual rodent control program starting from this year in this area due to consistently high numbers of rats outside operation times. These high numbers are impacting the bird and bat populations in the area and threatening other vulnerable native species.

The Department estimates that each pest control operation will provide a window for native species to breed and thrive that lasts around three to six months before rat numbers start to build up again.

The pest control will be closely monitored to ensure it is obtaining the outcomes needed to protect species.

Over the coming months, we will be conducting a consultation process with landowners, the local community and other interested parties.

A fact sheet containing further information on the pest control in the Heaphy Valley and coast is attached. The map shows the indicative boundaries of the operation.

DoC will be contracting a local pest control operator to carry out the work and notifications will be sent out closer to the time of the operation.

If you would like to discuss any aspect of what is proposed then please do not hesitate to contact me at the address below by September 30th, 2018.

Kind regards,

Jess Curtis

Prior to its US ban, 1080 was added to water to poison ship rats – yet DoC says it’s safe in our waterways

Remember the NZ Government has changed the rules so that 1080 poison, a Class 1A Ecotoxin, can be dropped directly into our waterways, without a consent from regional councils. They assure us it is perfectly safe and breaks down in water. And yet, here we see historically it was added to water to poison rats. How ‘scientific’ is that? We have two conservation academics with multiple degrees to their names, one considered the ‘founder of modern pest management in NZ’,  discussing their concerns at the science used by DoC to back their Predator Free 2050 program. They say it “has not been well informed by scientific knowledge or conservation best practice”. Now, aside from the questions raised about the reliability of the science behind this ambitious yet questionable program, we have a seeming reluctance by the authorities  to test for 1080 should you get poisoned. Please check out our 1080 ‘Suspected Poisoning’ page to explore that notion. And more recently we had a retired NZ physician threatened with prosecution for advising the public how to go about getting themselves tested should they suspect they’ve been affected by a nearby 1080 aerial drop. He adds that should you die of it, nobody will know.

Finally, on dilution. To cover that whole topic thoroughly requires a post of its own, however bear in mind the manufacturer’s data sheet warns us not to place 1080 in waterways at all:

Copy of Untitled.png

Then there was a former co leader of the Green Party who expressed concern about the testing of post 1080 drop water. The frequency of finding 1080 in water samples is at odds with independent testing he said. Official figures say 1080 is detected only 3% of the time however, from the calculations of an independent scientist that incidence is closer to 60%. Lastly we have to ask ourselves, if 1080 is so safe in water because it breaks down, then why was there ever a regional council consent required for it in the first place? All in all not good enough in my opinion. Keeping a Class 1A ecotoxin out of your drinking, or any other water really isn’t rocket science.

During the 1950s prior to being banned in the US, 1080 was added to  water to poison ships’ rats

From the ‘NO to 1080 use in NZ’ FB page

 1950’s America

Contrary to recent articles in the New Zealand media (including one seemingly supported by the Toxicology Dept of the University of Otago), 1080 poison does not become ‘safe’ when dissolved in water. In fact, historically (before it was banned), it was used in the USA as a poisoned water solution (along with DDT, before that was banned too), to kill the rats on cargo ships, in order to reduce the risk of rats’ fleas carrying a plague disease to humans.

In an academic public health journal, an article was published by Dr John H. Hughes on Aug. 11, 1950.
Entitled “1080 (Sodium Fluoroacetate) Poisoning of Rats on Ships” (Public Health Reports (1896-1970), Vol. 65, No. 32, pages 1021-1028) Dr Hughes explained how “the recommended concentration [for killing rats] is one-half ounce or 14 grams of the poison [which was] dissolved in one gallon of water.” The rats would drink from the poisoned-water bait-stations (which were made of paper cups) and die. Thousands of rats were found dead on 379 different ships, during inspections of the ships’ holds that took place between 24 hours to over a week after the poisoned water had been positioned. The dead rats were tested for poisoning to better understand the processes involved and then safely incinerated because the scientists knew of the high risks that the carcasses would contaminate other areas or poison other animals. The poisoned-water bait-stations were removed because “evaporation made the poisoned water more concentrated” – and therefore more lethal for unintended species.

Later, 1080 poison would be banned for use in ships’ holds, partly because, inevitably, many of the poisoned rats were NOT found: the risk of secondary poisoning was deemed to be too high.

If you are new to the 1080 poisoning program, a must watch is Poisoning Paradise, the doco made by the GrafBoys (banned from screening on NZ TV, yet a 4x international award winner). Their website is tv-wild.com. Their doco is a very comprehensive overview with the independent science to illustrate the question marks that remain over the use of this poison. There are links also on our 1080 resources page to most of the groups, pages, sites etc that will provide you with further information to make your own informed decision on this matter.

“NZ’s Predator Free 2050 program .. not .. well informed by scientific knowledge or conservation best practice” say two conservation academics

NZ’s very controversial Predator Free 2050 program is driven by “international agreements and a global agenda to purge all non native species of animals and plants around the world”.

A paper published by Professor Wayne Linklater and Dr Jamie Steer (July 2018) in Conservation Letters: A Journal of the Society for Conservation Biology  (cited at the Wiley Online Library*) concludes that the Government’s Predator Free 2050 program “has not been well informed by scientific knowledge or conservation best practice. It also misdirects attention” they say “from more fundamental and direct threats to biodiversity protection and recovery”.

Associate Professor Wayne Linklater from Victoria University’s School of Biological Sciences, considered by many to be the “founder of modern pest management in New Zealand” was recently awarded the 2018 Peter Nelson Memorial Trophy by New Zealand’s Biosecurity Institute in recognition of his research in pest management.

Dr Jamie Steer is a  Senior Biodiversity Advisor for Greater Wellington Regional Council. He has a Doctor of Philosophy in Environmental Science from the University of Auckland, a Master of Science in Ecology and Biodiversity, and a Bachelor of Science in Biology. He is a former member of the Ecological Society of New Zealand and a current Associate of the New Zealand Centre for Human-Animal Studies.

I’m sure you will agree that these two academics are well qualified to be commenting on NZ’s Predator Free agenda. DoC have purportedly discussed with them the concerns outlined in their research paper, however DoC is undeterred. Bear in mind they are tasked with selling to the public a global agenda signed up to historically to rid every nation in the world of any and all non native species, plant and animal.

You can read the research paper at the link:

Predator Free 2050: A flawed conservation policy displaces higher priorities and better, evidence‐based alternatives

Abstract

New Zealand’s policy to exterminate five introduced predators by 2050 is well‐meant but warrants critique and comparison against alternatives. The goal is unachievable with current or near‐future technologies and resources. Its effects on ecosystems and 26 other mammalian predators and herbivores will be complex. Some negative outcomes are likely. Predators are not always and everywhere the largest impact on biodiversity. Lower intensity predator suppression, habitat protection and restoration, and prey refugia will sometimes better support threatened biodiversity.

Department of Conservation Independent Poisoned Cow Investigation – nothing “independent” about it (GrafBoys)

So the authorities have finished investigating themselves … three weeks it’s taken for a truly ‘in depth’ report passing all of the blame predictably, onto the victims of the said drop.

Thanks to the GrafBoys for their truly independent coverage of this issue.

Published on Oct 23, 2018

The Department of Conservation has initiated an ‘independent” investigation following the death of 8 cows killed in its recent aerial 1080 poisoning operation. But is the independent investigation really independent?

Post 1080-drop water monitoring: a former Greens MP says there is gross misrepresentation around the official figures presented by DoC

Former Greens MP Steffan Browning, interviewed recently by Raglan Community Radio, discusses his preference for exploring alternative methods in culling pests. He also believes the information supplied to Eugenie Sage regarding the frequency of finding 1080 in water samples is at odds with independent testing. Official figures say 1080 is detected only 3% of the time however, from the calculations of an independent scientist that incidence is closer to 60%. The 3% figure supplied to OSPRI, Forest & Bird and so on, is in Browning’s opinion inaccurate & a gross misrepresentation. To go straight to the water sampling discussion go to 12 minutes.

And by the way, in addition to saying there are other Green MPs who are pro alternatives to 1080, he mentions former Green Party Co-Leader Rod Donald’s preference for the trapping alternative, illustrated by the Possum covering he had for his Parliamentary seat. What a shame their current Party stance is not so green on this topic.

Below is an excerpt from 1080’s product information warning about dropping baits in water, however the government has changed the rules so that they can drop it into waterways without a resource consent. The point of this news item is the way tests are carried out to determine poison levels, however, it is also pertinent to remember the manufacturer’s warning regarding water sources & 1080 risks:

Despite high rates of abandonment and failure of previously monitored kea nests the Kea Conservation Trust plans to continue

Carol Sawyer recently drew attention to a letter to the editor by scientist Dr Jo Pollard that expresses concern over the Kea Conservation Trust’s plans.

carol kea post 19 oct 18.jpg

LETTER, OTAGO DAILY TIMES, 16 October, 2018

“Dear Sir

I read your article on the activities of the Kea Conservation Trust (ODT 10/10/18) with despair. Paying no heed to the recent deaths of two pet kea that were blood sampled by DoC, this volunteer group is continuing with its blood sampling of wild kea. The group is also planning more interference with kea nests, despite high rates of abandonment and failure of nests which they have monitored previously. Normally, a female kea spends years building her nest then can use it for life. Even a preschool child knows that disturbing a bird’s nest is likely to cause abandonment and attract predators. Scientific literature backs this up. Research has also shown that stoats and possums are not normally a threat to kea nests, but other kea and falcons are and are likely to be attracted by monitoring. Science and common sense indicate that kea would be much better off left alone.

Yours Sincerely

Dr Jo Pollard (BSc (Hons), PhD)”

A NZ Landcare scientist estimates the likely death toll from an Otago 1080 drop in 2002 to be around 10,000 birds

More evidence on the apparent wanton decimation of NZ’s bird population by the deadly class 1A ecotoxin 1080, banned in most countries, with no antidote, dispensed by helicopters into the bush like a ‘veritable lollie scramble’ as I recently read it described by a person who for a long time worked with both 1080 poison & with DoC.

The late Bill Benfield* in his book, The Third Wave, Poisoning the Land, describes dead birds that were picked up by searchers in 2002 at the Waianakarua Scenic Reserve in North Otago (a 4043 hectare block). (p 71)

Each bird had been grid referenced on a map and at a pest management strategy meeting in Christchurch (May 2009) a Landcare scientist was able to estimate the likely death toll… an astonishing 10,000 birds. Benfield describes the potential possum population in the reserve as being around 7-8,000 in which case he concludes, the pest management people (DoC & AHB) are poisoning more birds than there are possums.

We know of course that 1080 can’t target just non-native birds. So the photos supplied by people of post-drop death counts invariably include examples of both.

Another image of a birds following a 1080 drop in Kahurangi National Park .. note the native Kereru and Kotare (supplied by Jim Hilton)

NOTE: the header image is not of the birds in question, these are from Paws 4 a Cause’s Facebook page, collected after another 1080 drop. There are many photos of dead birds collected by people directly after the drops. Regarding this article, there is an actual image supplied by Bill Benfield in his book (p71) however I do not at this stage have permission to use it. Please don’t bother asking for proof these ones died of 1080 poisoning. It is not rocket science as to why a collection such as these died when they were collected directly after a 1080 drop.  And besides, the Landcare scientist and the folk at the said pest management strategy meeting in Christchurch, all took it as given that the estimated 10,000 birds died of 1080 POISONING, not other causes. No mention of any other possibilities for death with neither any mention of testing the said birds. Now that these items of information are coming to the fore thanks to investigative writers like Benfield, and to the dedication of the many thousands who recently & historically protested, the said authorities are racing hither and yon suddenly getting the birds tested to ‘prove’ that the folk who simply want clean water & food are getting unnecessarily hysterical.

However, remember the 89 dead kiwi that DoC didn’t bother to test for possible 1080 poisoning? I rest my case. Clearly the authorities can no longer rest on their laurels and assume that the trusting NZ public are asleep like they used to be.

* About the late William (Bill) Benfield:

William Benfield was an environmentalist author who wrote three books. The first two dealt with the widespread use of 1080 poison in New Zealand. The first is titled At War with Nature-Corporate Conservation & the Industry of Extinction, (find on Amazon) the second, cited in the article above, is “The Third Wave: Poisoning the Land”. His third book is called Water: Quality and Ownership.
Read Amazon’s commentary on At War with Nature: Corporate Conservation and the Extinction Industry:

“This is a book about how the destruction of one of the world’s most unique, ancient and unspoiled wilderness areas has led to the growth of an international industry eradicating animals and plants which have been deemed to be “invasive”. That is because they are where pseudo-scientists say they should not be. What New Zealand began as an industrialised extermination has now become island eradications in many parts of the world. To expand and grow, it must either seek more islands, or widen its scope to cover whole nations; that is what it is now doing.
The parasitic riders who drive this conservation gravy train are:-
•Government conservation agencies who seek to increase their bureaucratic power and influence,
•The agri-chemical industry who supply the chemicals and poisons.
•The powerful and wealthy conservation charities who whip up the concept of “threats to nature” as a way generating donations, bequests and corporate sponsorships.
•The academic and science institutions who see in it a rich seam of grant money for supplying junk science in support of the eradication industry.
Eradications are carried out on a scale reminiscent of the US military aerial deforestation of Vietnam with “agent orange”. Here, for all wildlife, the animals, birds and insects, the poisons used are super-toxins such as brodifacoum and 1080. For vegetation, they have devised new wonder chemical cocktails such as “Armageddon”. It is total ecosystem genocide.
To whip up a public fervour to help justify such mass environmental poisoning, the people are fed the concepts of invasive pests and threats. Thus, harmless creatures are demonised and need be shown no mercy. By deliberate and devious propaganda, the public are kept unaware, that in the blinkered rush of zeal to kill “pests” and “predators”, the eradication industry is killing everything else, even the rare and endangered species such as an entire monitored population of rock wrens from an aerial 1080 poisoning at New Zealand’s Kuhurangi National Park.
It is a war against nature.”

Why aerial 1080 is more than a science debate (Stuff)

This is from Stuff. Surprizingly. Instead of the usual mainstream ‘bona fide justification for poisoning everything and saving our native birds’ (not) it actually acknowledges the information that campaigners for clean water and for refraining from poisoning the entire ecocide have been advocating for decades. Perhaps they’re now getting too loud to ignore.

Damon Rusden has restated the scientific case for continued use of aerial 1080 to control pests, but his argument fails to address the social side of the debate.

Underpinning the continued reliance on aerial 1080 lies the ambitious goal of turning back the clock – of eliminating every single introduced rodent, mustelid and marsupial with the aim of making New Zealand “predator free”. While there is virtually unanimous agreement that our native flora and fauna deserve protection, the feasibility and costs of returning the country to a pre-European state are often overlooked.

10080 on the Waitaha riverbed. The debate around the poison is more than the sum of all scientific papers on the topic. It is as much a social issue as it is a scientific one.
EMMA RICHARDSON
10080 on the Waitaha riverbed. The debate around the poison is more than the sum of all scientific papers on the topic. It is as much a social issue as it is a scientific one.

In fact, the logic behind being “predator free” requires closer examination. Is this nostalgic vision of returning the country “to what it once was” really what we need and want? Is it possible, and at what cost? If we are going to try to turn back the clock on introduced species, there needs to be consensus on how far back we want to go, and the methods of doing so need to be evaluated in more than just scientific terms.

Taking a big picture view on introduced animals may mean allocating some areas as predator free focus points, while other areas are managed with different outcomes in mind. Introduced species do have their benefits – possums yield fur, for example, and this is a valued resource on many levels. Accepting that possums are part of our national ecosystem and managing them accordingly, might therefore be a better option in some areas.

The ‘where’ and ‘why’ of 1080 also needs careful consideration. Rusden asserts that 1080 is dropped “in areas which are inaccessible by foot”. This might have been true once, but it is far from the truth today. On the West Coast, aerial 1080 is being applied to areas that are easily accessible on foot, with well-established hut and track networks.

The recent Karnbach operation is a case in point, with aerial 1080 placed in the main Waitaha riverbed and on the surrounding tracks. The supposed precision of aerial application resulted in baits submerged in the river itself. This operation, along with many others in the region, was conducted by Ospri as part of the TBFreeNZ program.

These operations have nothing to do with saving native birds or forests. Any benefits to native species are an unintended consequence of protecting the farming industry. The two goals should not be confused, or seen as one and the same.

Rusden goes on to claim that “much of the substance of the anger at 1080 seems to draw from the anti-establishment well”. In fact, there is more than anti-government sentiment at play here. There are sound ethical and animal welfare concerns surrounding 1080 use. What Rusden also fails to mention, is that the majority of aerial 1080 proponents do not live in the areas where it is being dropped.

A lot of the anger and resentment stems from a feeling of absolute powerlessness and lack of meaningful engagement with what is happening in one’s backyard. People who live in a place are often deeply passionate about it in a wholly different way to someone who comes to visit once a year. While the visitor may prize the area for its chortling flocks of tui, the family down the road obtain their water, and possibly their food, from the same block of bush. There is a fundamental difference in perspective. When the helicopters laden with poison buzz over your backyard your water supply, meat safe and recreation ground are all potential targets.

The science may be clear, but it doesn’t take into account the social, cultural or resource value associated with our ecosystems.  For those who live in these areas, the anger at this top-down approach is heartfelt and understandable. Simply writing it off as emotion or anti-government sentiment is not helpful.

Economic consequences are another consideration. The current regime of aerial 1080 drops offers little or no economic return to local communities. It would be heartening if locals were approached ahead of any drop, to identify areas that would be feasible trapping targets. Employment is a real concern in areas such as the West Coast, particularly when many of the traditional industries are being shut down. Local residents should be given the priority when it comes to pest control work.

The debate around 1080 is more than the sum of all scientific papers on the topic. It is as much a social issue as it is a scientific one. There are cultural and economic aspects that need to be considered, alongside the goal of bringing back the birds and restoring the forests.

Everyone is keen to see flourishing ecosystems, but people must remain part of that picture.

Here are 2 NZ Mayors who would like to see alternatives to 1080

Good to hear from prominent people in the community who are concerned about the extensive use of poisons in our environment posing potential risks to our health. Here, just prior to the pro-clean-water anti-1080 hikoi in September, Emile Leaf was welcomed informally on the road (6th Sept) by Horowhenua’s Mayor Michael Feyen. He expressed his personal preference for alternatives to 1080 being used. There is another also in this camp, the Mayor of Queenstown … we posted an article on that  a month or so back.

It would be a good idea to contact the Mayor & Councilors of your own particular region & see if any others are pro alternatives.

Clean & Green? The toxic 1080 cover up by the NZ Government

Published on Nov 14, 2011

New Zealand drops into its forests about 4,000kg of pure 1080 per year. Enough to kill 20 million people. How Can we call ourselves clean and green with thousands of tons of poison dropped into our forests. We need your world wide help to stop this obscene practice. The international community needs to get involved and say “stop this insanity!
A must watch if you are not familiar with 1080 poison is the GrafBoys’ 4x international award winning doco ‘Poisoning Paradise’. You can find links to it on our 1080 page at the main menu.

The NZ Govt is teaching your child that Class 1A ecotoxin 1080, banned by most countries, is ‘not very dangerous to humans’

Note: As your kids head back to school, keep an eye out for the poison propaganda. IMO it is not acceptable to send an official text book message to young children that a class 1A ecotoxin, classed by WHO as ‘highly hazardous’, is not very dangerous to humans. There is no antidote to this poison & it is frequently found lying around for weeks on end after aerial drops.  (21/1/2019)

Over all, this item featuring a Year 10 Science book & its fairly ho hum description of the toxicity of 1080, appears to be normalizing the use of poisons.

Dr Meriel Watts says about 1080 poison:

“1080 is classed by the World Health Organisation as an Extremely Hazardous pesticide (Class 1a WHO). You may not be aware that as such it falls within the category of Highly Hazardous Pesticides for which the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) is seeking a global phase out.

There is no antidote for 1080. Poisoned  by it, you have no hope of being saved. However, our esteemed authorities in higher places have seen fit to describe it to our children as not very dangerous to humans. Wherever you stand on the use of 1080, be it for or against, I would still call such a description of an acutely toxic poison for your children’s information, highly irresponsible.

THIS IS WHAT OUR YEAR 10 NEW ZEALAND SCHOOL PUPILS ARE BEING TAUGHT!

This is from Science Plus, Book 2, Year 10. Why is the government allowed to teach our children lies?

Read the data on 1080 straight from the manufacturer’s info:

HAZARD IDENTIFIERS:
Priority Identifiers – Danger. Deadly Poison. Keep out of reach of
children. Ecotoxic.
Secondary Identifiers – Acutely toxic. May be fatal if swallowed,
inhaled or absorbed through the skin. Repeated oral exposure may
cause reproductive or developmental damage. When handling open
containers or baits, wear protective equipment as indicated below.
Toxic to terrestrial vertebrates. Take measures to reduce the risk of nontarget
animals being exposed to the toxin either through eating baits or
by scavenging the carcasses of poisoned animals. Harmful to aquatic
organisms. Manage bait application rates carefully and comply with any
restrictions imposed on placing baits over or near waterways. Avoid
pollution of any water supply with pellets or used container.

1080 is NOT a natural substance.. it is a synthetic poison, a World Health Organisation Class 1A ecotoxin, banned in most countries. It is extremely dangerous to humans. One standard teaspoon of pure 1080 poison can kill 100 grown men. One 1080 bait (0.15% pure poison) can kill a child.

Over all, the use of poisons appears to be becoming very normalized. Videos like this below certainly illustrate that.

I read an article yesterday by Geoff Booth, a Kiwi and a B.Sc. who worked for a long time in pest eradication using poisons including 1080 & with DoC, so is very knowledgeable in the use of 1080. He said the US manufacturers are dismayed at the way we in NZ use 1080, in a totally opposite way to the labelled recommendations, ie it is ‘chucked around in a veritable lollie scramble in the bush from helicopters’.

Those of us who have lived more than 50 years on the planet know that there was little mention of poison in our childhoods. If you personally think it’s fine for our kids, you need to read Dr Meriel Watts’ book, Poisoning Our Future: Children and Pesticides.

Poisoning Our Future small

“Poisoning Our Future: Children and Pesticides” The book details the scientific evidence for the insidious effects of pesticides on children and calls on government institutions to adopt a more precautionary approach to better protect human health and the environment.

Toxic chemicals such as pesticides pollute our surroundings – from the food we eat, the water we drink, and the air we breathe in our homes, farms, communities, at schools and work and even our own bodies. Children are exposed to these pesticides and are very much vulnerable to the negative health effects of these harmful chemicals. Yet, governments and industry overlook these impacts on children’s health despite the availability of safer alternatives to pesticides.

According to Pesticide Action Network Aoteoroa New Zealand author, Dr Meriel Watts, “Children are not little adults. The activities they do make them more prone to accumulate pesticides in their bodies; and their developing bodies make them more prone to the negative effects of toxic chemicals such as pesticides. Yet government regulatory processes and tests do not look into these effects,” according to Dr Meriel Watts, author of the book. Tests used to approve use of pesticides do not look into endocrine disruption which can impact the physical, intellectual and behavioural development of the foetus and young child. The effects can include ADHD and autism and even conditions like obesity and breast cancer that can show up later in life in what is now referred to as the “foetal origins of adult disease”. Some childhood cancers like leukaemia have been linked to the exposure of parents to pesticides. Highly hazardous pesticides also damage the developing immune, nervous and reproductive systems.

Good morning,

I am very concerned after viewing a year 10 science text book on an anti poison social media page  The information within the text book is incorrect and highly dangerous, to elude that one of the worlds deadliest poisons, Compound 1080 with no known antidote, ‘is not that poisonous to humans’ is ludicrous and downright evil.

How are children meant to know any different about the dangers of this poison if this is what they are taught at schools in New Zealand!!

This textbook information directly contradicts the manufacturers warning label & manufacturers data sheet:

Deadly poison. Keep out of reach of children
Avoid all waterways.
Deadly to aquatic life.
Will decompose at temperatures over 200 degrees.
Avoid secondary poisoning.
Poisoned carcasses should be burned completely or buried deeply at hazardous waste landfill

Please alert the Ministry of Education to this terrible error! I have already emailed them with no success to have this textbook removed from the curriculum.

I look forward to your reply.

Who is really driving Pest Free NZ (PFNZ) – what you aren’t being told

An excellent article here that throws much needed light on the 1080 poison issue. So here it is in plain sight. Agenda 21, kicked off at the Earth Summit in 1992. If the prevention of biodiversity loss caused by alien species was so above board why are they not selling it to the general public in its original terms? And as I keep repeating, if this UN document were truly about their so called sustainable practices we should by now be seeing some results. Instead we see unprecedented pollution, environmental destruction, poverty, inequality, homelessness & debt. And aside from all of that, what is sustainable about poisoning the entire environment? What is sustainable about poison, period? Oh, that’s right, certain corporate profits.

By J James at infonews.co.nz

What is driving the Pest Free NZ Agenda and the hysteria in eradicating non native species.  Answer – International agreements and a global  agenda to purge all non native species of animals and plants around the world.

Its wise to know that when you stand up to protest DOC for the tortuous deaths it is perpetrating on innocent animals,  that you are confronting not just DOC or the current minister or politician but a host of unelected bureaucrats who manage all the various global agreements NZ has signed up to.  These bureaucrats ensure that things run smoothly. The minister and the politicians are an interface between us and them.  John Key called these global organisations the clubs

There is much more to this story that you can research yourself but the core thing here is that NZ is part of a much bigger extremist idea under the guise of protecting biodiversity – or purism as I call it –  where everything and anything non native and not productive to  human use will be destroyed.

While you browse through these sites you will read a language that appears benign and even needed, yet the practical application and act of killing so many innocent species unlucky to find themselves in another country is horrendous to contemplate and makes me wonder about the sanity of this human race.

Nature abhors a vacuum and will do anything to balance her eco system and can usually do it – its called adaption its called evolution.  When ‘man’ decides to play god then unintended consequences abound and we are all put at risk.  That we now stand at the edge of this psychopathic agenda of death, we must pause for a moment and consider how industry with the approval of governments have deforested the planet to feed its voracious appetite for money for economic growth at all costs .  There has been a huge cost – industry enabled by  governments have destroyed so much of the world’s natural habitat that species extinction has become so obvious.  The shock of this has forced the agenda of biodiversity loss using eradication of non native species as a means to address it.

Here in NZ it is seen most noticeably in the dropping of poison out of helicopters into pristine ecosystems, rendering them silent.
When New Zealand announced its Predator Free NZ vision it wasn’t as if suddenly someone in the Department of Conservation woke up with a great idea – it was a directive NZ had to follow as part of being a member of the United Nations.  They never mention this.

There is a global agenda to rid every nation in the world of any and all non native species – animals and plants – non productive species that is – cows and sheep bulls and horses and domestic pigs will stay because they are part of industry and form the back bone of many economies.  But the rest that are not needed will be eradicated.

This is the global agenda and it’s time we knew where this kill kill mentality actually came from.

New Zealand is a member of the IUCN which stands for International Union for Conservation of  Nature – on the international stage NZ is part of the Oceania group  run by the Department of Conservation. Its government agencies are:

The IUCN was founded in 1948. Taken from their website it says this:

”….located near Geneva, Switzerland. The Union brings together 86 states, 120 government agencies, 825 national and 92 international non-governmental organisations, 34 affiliate organisations and through its Commissions about 11,000 experts and scientists from more than 160 countries around the world…”

IUCN’s mission is to influence, encourage and assist societies throughout the world to conserve the integrity and diversity of nature and to ensure that any use of natural resources is equitable and ecologically sustainable. The Union has three components: its member organisations, its six scientific commissions, and its professional secretariat.

IUCN is the only environmental organisation to have official observer status at the United Nations General Assembly.

NGOs connected to this in NZ are:

They all aim for ecological integrity (purity, my word).

All over the world the word has gone out that all creatures great and small that are not indigenous to that land will be terminated.  It’s not just New Zealand

IUCN GUIDELINES FOR THE PREVENTION OF BIODIVERSITY LOSS CAUSED BY ALIEN INVASIVE SPECIES

”….. Biological diversity faces many threats throughout the world. One of the major threats to native biological diversity is now acknowledged by scientists and governments to be biological invasions caused by alien invasive species.  The impacts of alien invasive species are immense, insidious, and usually irreversible. They may be as damaging  to native species and ecosystems on a global scale as the loss and degradation of habitats…”

its goals and objectives are …. sound familiar?

”……to prevent further losses of biological diversity due to the deleterious effects of alien invasive species. The intention is to assist governments and management agencies to give effect to Article 8 (h) of the Convention on Biological Diversity, which states that: “Each Contracting Party shall, as far as possible and as appropriate: …(h) Prevent the introduction of, control or eradicate those alien species which threaten ecosystems, habitats or species….”

Then there is the CBD which is Convention on Biodiversity and is a legally binding multilateral treaty from the UN of which NZ is a member.  It has three main goals:

“…The conservation of biological diversity (or biodiversity); the sustainable use of its components; and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from genetic resources.

In other words, its objective is to develop national strategies for the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity. It is often seen as the key document regarding sustainable development. The Convention was opened for signatures at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro on 5 June 1992 and entered into force on 29 December 1993. At the 2010 10th Conference of Parties (COP) to the Convention on Biological Diversity in October in Nagoya, Japan, the Nagoya Protocol was adopted…”

or said another way

Protecting Biodiversity.

“….The current decline in biodiversity is largely the result of human activity and represents a serious threat to human development. Despite mounting efforts over the past 20 years, the loss of the world’s biological diversity, mainly from habitat destruction, over-harvesting, pollution and the inappropriate introduction of foreign plants and animals, has continued. Biological resources constitute a capital asset with great potential for yielding sustainable benefits.

Urgent and decisive action is needed to conserve and maintain genes, species and ecosystems, with a view to the sustainable management and use of biological resources…”

Another part of this is the Invasive Species Specialty group

Their mission statement says:
“….The Invasive Species Specialist Group (ISSG) aims to reduce threats to natural ecosystems and the native species they contain by increasing awareness of invasive alien species, and of ways to prevent, control or eradicate them….”

When you hear the DoC and the minister for the Environment talk of eradicating species this is what they are talking about .  This is what they are instructed to do as a member state of the UN.

Here in NZ we are watching the eradication of  wild game – food that many rely on to feed their families –  hunting is as kiwi as rugby – but a wild food industry is being slowly eradicated under the guise of PFNZ .

NZ has no wild mammals as such,  all wild game including trout existing here now is non native and earmarked for eradication, despite them being brought in over 100 years ago.  The various NZ bodies of these organisations do not come out directly and say this of course,  instead they are doing it by stealth, and the best tool in the box for this eradication appears to be the deadly Sodium fluoroacetate commonly referred to as 1080.

The very Govt organization that issues consents for 1080 drops is to conduct the ‘independent’ review of DoC’s recent aerial operation that killed 8 cows

“Waikato Regional Council will undertake the independent review. NZ Herald.

Related: https://envirowatchrangitikei.wordpress.com/2018/09/29/with-an-estimated-158-stock-deaths-pa-in-nz-docs-proposed-independent-review-of-the-waikato-1080-drop-that-killed-8-cows-is-rare-indeed/

This is all very in-house isn’t it? Not unlike how the Police investigate themselves. Or how Monsanto long ago in the 1970s tested Roundup themselves for safety. Also a bit like asking the second hand car dealer to check over the car you are looking to purchase.

Dr Meriel Watts appealed to Environment Waikato (now Waikato Regional Council, WRC) in 2010 to desist from the use of 1080 as they considered the issuing of up to 20 year consents for aerial dispersal of the said product:

“Re: EPRO and EcoFX Resource Consent Applications

Dear Mr Laing,

I am writing to you on behalf of Pesticide Action Network Aotearoa New Zealand to express our profound opposition to Environment Waikato’s anachronistic proposal to allow 10- or 20-year resource consents to EPROand EcoFX to aerially disperse 1080 in the region.

As you are no doubt aware, 1080 is classed by the World Health Organisation as an Extremely Hazardous pesticide (Class 1a WHO). You may not be aware that as such it falls within the category of Highly Hazardous Pesticides for which the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) is seeking a global phase out.

That Environment Waikato is contemplating 10 or 20 year consents to use, let alone aerially disperse, 1080, when a UN agency is promoting a global phase out of all such pesticides is extraordinary. I can only assume that you officers are not aware of the situation.

To issue consents of 10 or more years duration also flies in the face of ERMA’s concern about such on-going widespread dispersal of 1080 in the environment, and their support for more research into alternatives. There will be no room for introduction of alternatives in the EW region if these consents are granted.”

1080 is a broad-spectrum poison: it kills all oxygen-breathing animals and organisms. This alone is reason enough to cease dispersing it into the environment. It indiscriminately kills and contaminates everything from the insects that underpin the native fauna food chain to precious native birds, dogs and farm animals. There are so many recorded instances that there is no need to elaborate on them here. Nor the fact that the suffering of these animals on the way to death is extremely inhumane.

That New Zealand has such a history of poisoning its indigenous species, livestock and companion animals is a shame we have to live with. But we do not need to perpetuate it. Thankfully the era of poisoning everything we don’t like is passing, and intelligent new, targeted approaches to pest management are taking its place.

It is time now for Environment Waikato to move forward with the rest of the world, and introduce alternatives. Trapping has been shown to be an effective method of controlling possums, at the same time utilising a valuable resource for the benefit of the national economy, and trapping technology is continually improving. On the other hand, years of experience of 1080 dispersal has shown that this approach is not sustainable, it has to be repeated at regular intervals, each time with its negative consequences for the environment.

Pesticide Action Network therefore urges you to reject the idea of extended resource consents for aerial dispersal of 1080, and to instead focus your resources on rapid introduction of sustainable, environmentally friendly, and socially supportive alternatives such as trapping.

Yours sincerely,

Meriel Watts, PhD,

Pesticide Action Network

When a PHD & author of 2 well known books* on the effects of poisons on human beings & environments, takes the time to warn those who are mandating widespread poisoning of the environment of the dangers therein, you would think that that authority would heed the warning. But no, not only have they continued dropping 1080, it increases yearly. And the rules have even been changed so that 1080 can be delivered straight into waterways without a consent from council!

Indeed since that time the Government itself has been busy making the product for the country (NZ) that was already using 80% or thereabouts of the world’s supply. Cleverly re branding it to make its image slightly more palatable to the non questioning public.

2openlab

We are expected to now believe that an investigation into this recent incident involving the death of 8 cows (including aborted calves) by the very organization that is not only a branch of the same tree and pro 1080, will be independent?

They are all under the same Government umbrella!  DoC, Regional Council, Orillion. May as well save themselves the time, money & effort because we can fairly safely bet on what the outcome will be.

*(The Poisoning of New Zealand, 1994 – and – Pesticides and Breast Cancer, 2007)

With an estimated 158 stock deaths pa in NZ, DoC’s proposed independent review of the Waikato 1080 drop that killed 8 cows is rare indeed

So … “the Department of Conservation (DOC) is taking the extraordinary step of getting an independent review of a 1080 operation in which cows were subsequently killed…” (tvnz)

“Extraordinary” alright. In the midst of the growing current NZ-wide distrust of the poison that’s constantly been touted as next to harmless, DoC appears to be in damage control mode as their 1080 edifice cracks & crumbles, making much here of the scenario that the cows allegedly broke through a fence to the 1080-treated adjacent area. Listen to the video however as this family are interviewed. A lot of questions remain unanswered. Scrambling to control the public perception of 1080 now with independent reviews to prove their credibility, yet killing 89 of NZ’s iconic treasured native Kiwi garnered not ONE test to see if any of them died of 1080 poisoning. Small wonder they are losing credibility. Then was their opportunity to prove to us all that the Kiwi did not die of 1080 poisoning but back then the public believed all the glossy brochures that told us only pests died from 1080.

One of the owners notes that they have not found one dead possum (one of those pests we’re told are ‘targeted’, a miracle given 1080 kills ALL oxygen breathing animals and organisms, including insects … it was developed initially as an insecticide) … and to state the obvious, this land could clearly have been covered by bait stations. Why was an aerial drop used? We are frequently told aerial drops are required for inaccessible areas. It is routinely applied however ‘near homes, farm boundaries, public highways and into rivers from which drinking water is drawn’. Many examples of this have been highlighted more recently as the issue has come under closer scrutiny.

The point here also is, this is not an isolated & rare incident. DoC’s investigation of such incidents however is. They should really order reviews on all of the other stock deaths that slipped under the radar, many on account of being hidden in the paperwork. Yes farmers are asked to declare their stock deaths (farmers who want compensation for those losses) as something other than stock deaths. Hear farmers interviewed on that at this link.

A working document summarizing significant poisoning events connected to aerial poisoning for pest control in NZ estimates the total numbers of deaths in farmed deer/cattle as being 3,408, estimated in 1976 to be approximately 158 per year. This would total approx. 10,000 since 1954. Actual recorded data is likely to be a small percentage of the whole total.

Dr Meriel Watts records the incident in the ’90s where 570 sheep were poisoned by 1080, with sheep still dying six months later.

Total numbers of dogs: could be as high as 6816 per year which equals 429,408 over 63 years of aerial poisoning operations.

Total numbers of human poisoning incidents: approx. 31 individuals (more pending)

In 2009 two midwives urged their pregnant patients to leave town before a 1080 drop – hear the late Dr Scanlon speak on the lack of research on the potential risks to the unborn

“It is astounding that no−one has done any research on the effects of sub−lethal doses of 1080 episodic exposures on developing human and non−human brains, given the fact, that 1080 is a known brain or central nervous system toxin!”
Dr Peter Scanlon

The article from mainstream in 2009 mentioned in the headline, rolls out the usual statements of ‘the benefits outweigh the risks’ or ‘there’s little evidence 1080 could harm pregnant women’, without producing a shred of data to prove these claims to the public. That could be because there really aren’t any according to the late Dr Peter Scanlon who asked the pertinent questions on 1080 research, or rather the lack thereof, quote:

“Where are the cancer causing or carcinogenicity studies? … there aren’t any;

Where are the reproductive studies, particularly focusing on female eggs? … there aren’t any;

Where are the developmental studies, early exposure to brain, immune system? … there aren’t any;

Where are the long term chronic exposure studies looking at mitochondrial DNA content and mutation rates? there aren’t any.

There’s a lot of doubts about this substance, it’s dangerous.”

Hear Dr Scanlon speak on the need for regulatory bodies to look at those age groups that are most vulnerable to chemical environmental exposure which can affect them in those growing periods.  The periods he says when there are critical windows of much harm being done in the womb, foetuses, embryos, newborns and how exposure here in this early time of life, can lead to great harm & susceptibility to disease years or decades later. Watch the GrafBoys’ video below. Dr Scanlon speaks in the first half of the video.

So the midwives’ precautionary warnings to their patients were well founded.

Dear Select Committee members,

I would suggest that you request scientifically referenced answers to some important questions in relation to the human safety of aerial 1080 (or sodium monofluoracetate/SMFA) drops in New Zealand or invoke the precautionary principle until such information is provided. With respect to potential human health risks the ERMA process was inadequate and often based on outdated and simplistic 19th and mid− 20th century level science involving animal studies that will not predict human risk, particularly in the most vulnerable populations. Any 19th or earlier century scientist could tell you what dose of 1080 would likely kill or be acutely toxic to human or non− human creatures. However no one can tell me or you for that matter, what sub−lethal dose will not have long−term negative health effects on the developing brain, immune, dental, endocrine and reproductive systems in embryos, newborns and young children using late 20th and early 21st century methods to access harm, especially changes to gene expression that may lead to disease later in life.

Early developmental exposures may lead to life−long problems and some may be analogous to the “leaky home” phenomena, where problems only manifest with time, hence long−term developmental studies are needed to exclude this possibility. I alerted ERMA of the 2007 International Conference on Fetal Programming and Developmental Toxicity which produced a very important statement (The Faroes Statement) for regulatory bodies to incorporate specific testing for early life environmental chemical exposures for risk assessment which was ignored. Could you please provide an impartial answer to a question posed by Independent MP Gordon Copeland in 2008 ” Does 1080 pose a risk to the health of unborn children?”

A concerned Māori woman contacted me and presented to the Waitangi Tribunal evidence for the Whanganui Inquiry last year her concerns that 1080 may have been implicated in causing a cluster of miscarriages, stillbirths and congenital malformations to the children of pregnant Māori women following aerial drops and raised the question of bowel cancer in some adult Māori being possibly linked to environmental 1080 exposures through contaminated food and water sources.

The current scientific gaps which the ERMA 2007 reassessment failed to address and assumptions based on outdated or poorly studied science for human risk considerations cannot exclude the possibility of 1080 having such adverse health effects in Whanganui or other NZ rural communities. The current medical system cannot easily investigate such concerns. In following an ERMA directive, recent NZ studies have found maximal levels of 1080 in puha & watercress to contain, respectively 15 and 63 parts per billion, and on the basis of these figures it has been calculated that a 70kg person would have to eat 9.3 tonnes of affected puha & 22 tonnes of affected watercress to have a 50% chance of dying from 1080 poisoning. Sadly that gives absolutely no safety reassurances for the many pregnant women or those with chronic medical conditions such as kidney, heart or liver disease, who enjoy such kai, or the common practice of Maori parents who mix mashed puha or watercress with pumpkin or kumara for the feeding of their infants. Non−toxic, low dose 1080 will not pose a risk for healthy adults but the current environmental food & water risks are in the ballpark levels that could especially harm our youngest & most vulnerable children. What 1080 amount will not affect their growing bodies, especially their developing brains? What level may cause a miscarriage? It is astounding that no−one has done any research on the effects of sub−lethal doses of 1080 episodic exposures on developing human and non−human brains, given the fact, that 1080 is a known brain or central nervous system toxin! And the brain function is intimately connected with immune and endocrine function. One Pirongia mother has raised this issue of developmental delay and other health issues in her children from possible low level water contamination during pregnancy in a well written ERMA submission. The studies for which the Ministry of Health based their provisional maximal acceptable levels of 1080 for drinking water ( 3.5 parts per billion) did not include neurotoxicity data, nor does Natalia Forunda’s University of Otago’s 2007 PhD
recommended level of 0.6 ( zero point six) parts per billion. I believe if developmental data, including fetal & young infant brain data were included, given the extreme vulnerability of this age group, that a much lower Maximal Acceptable Value for drinking water would be mandated. The limits of reported testing for 1080 is 0.1 ( zero point one) part per billion, so if one looked at the most vulnerable human groups, unborn and young children, levels under this, which the current test would record as zero, could still pose a human health risk. No aerial drops should occur near drinking water until this risk has been excluded and long−term neuro−developmental (i.e. behavior & brain function), immune, metabolic and reproductive outcomes for early life exposures have been scientifically accessed.
The finding of naturally occurring levels of SMFA being present in drinking tea at higher levels than the provisional maximal acceptable values for potable water, hence implying safety, is irrelevant for early unborn exposures. Some recent studies have linked tea− consumption during pregnancy to increased risks of brain tumours, leukaemia, dental fluorosis in the child as well as an increased risk of pre−eclampsia in the mother. Laboratory eel studies have shown 1080 levels of 17.4 parts per billion for those eels that consumed contaminated possum muscle and 30.6 parts per billion that ate contaminated possum gut. 1080 is slowly metabolized in eels. Are eels contaminating the food chain?
Will NIWA provide 1080 contaminant monitoring for local consumers of 1080 levels in eels after aerial drops and also measure other possible contaminants such as heavy metals, pesticide residues and toxins in them, that may have negative additive human health effects?
The ERMA scientific advisors decided that no studies were needed to be done to see if 1080 causes cancer on the basis that 1080 did not cause DNA mutations using traditional types of screening tests which are now being questioned in the cancer literature for their usefulness in predicting cancer risk given the rapid advances in the past few years in studying non−mutagenic causes of cancer. For instance, one of the energy−producing enzymes that 1080 inactivates, aconitase, has recently be found to have a role in regulating and protecting mitochondrial DNA from mutating. 1080 affects the sausage shaped cellular structures called mitochondria. Human cells contain 2 sources of DNA, namely nuclear and mitochondrial DNA. The possible effect of 1080 causing mitochondrial DNA mutations has simply not been accessed. Another enzyme that 1080 interferes with also has been linked with a certain type of cancer. Also, sub−lethal effects of 1080 impairing energy production needs to researched as defects in mitochondrial functioning has been recently found to play an important role in the initiation and/or progression of various types of cancer, including colorectal cancer Having recently met the daughter of one of the early 1080 aerial operation users and discovered her father died ” too early” with Bowel Cancer− the lack of any carcinogenicity studies in light of recent developments is simply inexcusable. Furthermore, damage to mitochondrial DNA has recently been shown to be involved in causing common diseases besides cancer such as heart disease, obesity & degenerative brain disorders, including dementia. Long−term studies on those working with this chemical or any individual with chronic medical conditions such as kidney impairment, diabetes, liver disease or heart disease that consumes possible 1080 contaminated foods should be accessed for progressive mitochondrial toxicity and for effects on mitochondrial DNA.
The 1080 chronic intoxication study of an occupationally exposed rabbiter −exposed over 10 years, was published in the NZ Medical Journal in 1977, and was ignored by ERMA mainly because the Christchurch doctors who trustingly sent a urine specimen to a certain Forest Research Institute scientist to measure the 1080 contained in it, who gave them a 1080 measurement in writing, later denied that he had in fact measured 1080. The more recent Sept 2009 NZ Medical Journal research on 1080 assessment of occupational exposures by Beasley and colleagues failed to even acknowledge or learn from this former paper yet they did admit how little they know about 1080 interactions with the human body. It was the similar structural toxicity appearances in the liver and kidney cells from the rabbiter’s specimen’s to morphological or structural states in 1080 experimental animals that lead Parkin and colleagues, to consider 1080 as the most likely cause of toxicity. They used electron microscopy performed on kidney biopsies taken from the rabbiter which showed changes that most likely represented degenerating mitochondria, hence the need to look for evidence of mitochondrial pathology such as tissue biopsies, or look for changes in mitochondrial DNA levels using techniques as have been used for monitoring HIV drug−induced mitochondrial toxicity, or check for mitochondrial DNA mutations and not just focus on 1080 level measurements. The reason New Zealand Medical Officers of Health report no concerns with 1080 is that they have failed to do the appropriate diagnostic investigations just mentioned, and the following adage applies to them−”If you don’t know what to look for, then you probably won’t find it”. 30 yrs later we still have no decent chronic toxicity human data or really understand the human kinetics of this chemical in healthy adults, let alone those with any concurrent chronic illnesses and most significantly Beasley and colleagues failed to do any measures of mitochondrial toxicity from this mitochondrial interfering toxin, hence we are none the wiser about its safety.
Given the “scientific ignorance” of those who proclaim human safety when doing aerial drops near water supplies in the West Coast, Whanganui, Coromandel, Levin, Hutt Valley and other regions of New Zealand and the real lack of safety data, especially for NZ’s most vulnerable human populations, our unborn, young and old and those with chronic illnesses, one really must question whether it is ethical to use such a poorly studied chemical from a human health risk perspective. The native flora and fauna are replaceable. TB ridden cows are replaceable but the future health of our children and our most vulnerable is not.

” I nga wa o mua” − The past informs the present.
” Foresight should be sought as hindsight is dearly bought”

Yours sincerely,

Fight against 1080 goes to Te Taitokerau Māori Land Court

A must watch is yesterday’s interview of Alan Gurden & Emille Leaf. They refer to the problems raised in this article that 1080 is purportedly addressing.

The article below is from Herald:

An urgent injunction has been lodged in the Māori Land Court Te Taitokerau to stop the Department of Conservation making 1080 drops over public or private land.

The injunction was accepted at the Te Taitokerau land court in Whangārei on Thursday afternoon on the grounds of the urgency of the case, said a spokesman for the applicants.

The injunction will be considered today.

Lodged by Northland men Riki Ngatoki and Hayward Brown, it was prepared with the help of Nga Tikanga Māori Law Society Inc.

The Department of Conservation (DoC) is due to drop 1080 poison over Russell State Forest and part of Cape Brett in the next two weeks, weather permitting, after laying taster bait last week.

A spokeswoman said a copy of the injunction was delivered to the Whangārei office late last week.

DoC has called off all planned drops until the outcome of the injunction is known, she said. DoC could not comment further while the matter was in that process.

The injunction did not specify the Northland drops but applied to the use of 1080 anywhere over Māori land in New Zealand, Ngatoki said.

Another case is expected to be heard in the Environment Court this week, lodged by Auckland opponents of 1080 trying to stop a drop in the Hunua Ranges.

But Nga Tikanga Māori Law considers the matter its injunction is based on is about land and ownership rights.

It is understood Māori Land Court injunction refers to land boundaries and legal descriptions in the intended Northland drop zone.

Ngatoki said the underlying argument is about returning to tangata whenua the right to say what happens on Māori-owned land. He said poisoning the land and water was not part of the values of past generations or of tikanga Māori.

There are alternatives to 1080

Well I’m blown away. Herald has published a piece about alternatives to 1080. Just on the heels of my post on mainstream media. Either there’s progress on that front, or there’s more to their agenda than meets the eye. I would have to say I get a little suspicious when MS does a turn around. However…  in the meanwhile, this is good news. It comes specifically from Hawke’s Bay Today & is a scathing commentary on a previous opinion piece about 1080.

*Norm Brown: There are alternatives to 1080 poison

Norm Brown says dropping 1080 with no due care of the results is ‘despicable’ Photo: Hawke’s Bay Today

In reply to Mark Story’s opinion piece that claimed 1080 angst is “unhinged and ill-informed”.

You call me unhinged because I argued with Ospri about aerial spreading 1080 over tracks and river edge in the Kawekas where we take students tramping and which is used frequently by tourists and New Zealand public.

You call me unhinged when I then find out a couple of weeks later that the MoH had actually told Ospri to ground treat the area concerned. That Ospri also told me that the area would be safe and just wash the students’ shoes is even more insulting.

To say I am ill-informed when I am working to the only official regulations available by law to me, the label and the chemical data sheet, is slander and fraudulent.

To say that other anti-1080 people are ill-informed is also slanderous and fraudulent.

You are saying that the label and the chemical data sheet are false science. Are you really saying that everyone should ignore chemical labels and data sheets or do you just wish to pick on 1080?

If you are saying that the regulations are fraudulent then I suggest that you very quickly get the Government to change the EPA personnel because you have just called them incompetent and mischievous.

To be 100 per cent truthful you should be saying that anti-1080 people believe in the regulations while the pro-1080 people such as Ospri have been given dispensation not to work to the regulations.

Even then the pro-1080 people are disobeying the few restrictions placed on them when given the dispensation. There are two rules governing 1080. This is the essence of the issue. This has been stated often.

So now it comes down to who is actually ill informed, the anti-1080 people or Ospri and commentators like yourself?

When Ospri forces non-compliant applications of 1080 on the populous with no due care of the results it is despicable.

It builds the fear, anger, frustration and a genuine need to protest. Your article ridicules those affected and only adds heat to this.

To tell anti-1080 people they are using false science, when they are working to the label and data sheets (the regulations), builds the anger to contempt and accusations of fraud and corruption.

Your opinion piece has just drawn all these on to you and your paper. Integrity would require your words to be withdrawn and an apology offered to all of New Zealand for helping expose them to this horrendous deadly poison that has no antidote, has horrendous side effects on all mammals (humans are mammals) birds, insects, and plant life.

1080 breaks down at 200C, dissolves easily in water and is known to create secondary and tertiary poisoning, and in many cases leaves the carcasses to rot over many months in catchment areas (insects die if they try to eat the carcass), creating a bacterial contamination.

It is time you did some research to find what is driving the fear and anger and the frustration. It is columns like yours that are ill-founded, ill-informed and somewhat unhinged.

You say anti-1080 people create havoc with the environment, which is also slanderous.

Most of us are well aware of the environment and the protection of it. Especially when it comes to humanity.

Awareness is driven by fear that we will have more effects like thalidomide, 245T, 24D, DDT, and asbestos, to name some. These were all declared safe by the manufacturers and our own EPA and yet created social trauma. The 1080 label and EPA say 1080 is not safe.

If you get a chance, look at the photos the New Plymouth nurse took over several years of fetal defects in the Paratutu area where the Dow factory was located. I am sorry, humanity comes first.

To try to tell New Zealand that there is no alternative to 1080, is crap.

Pests are very well controlled in all farmland and It was not aerial dropping of 1080.

Alternatives are controlled and precise.

However, I would prefer the expansion of these alternatives to the short and long term results of current uncontrolled aerial spreading by people who have no credibility or ethical behavior.

Controlling the 1080 dialogue – our journalists are “tools and vassals of rich men behind the scenes”

Predictably, after the NZ Govt ignored our two men who walked the entire length of the two Islands with their concerns about environmental pollution & the poisoning of our whenua & kai, the media continues to take from the hand that feeds them & report only what will support a favourable public perception of the deadly poison 1080. I stopped following mainstream long ago. It is owned by around six corporations now & no prizes for guessing the ownership of those.

media-con

Our growing fascist corporatocracy is well armed with willing participants ie sold out journos. You can swap out NY Times in the image below for NZ Herald, Stuff and so on, they’re all pretty much the same. Whore media basically.

Journos don’t bite the hand that feeds them. Don’t believe me? My opinion is not new.

John Swinton (1830-1901) was the chief editorial journalist at the New York Times from 1860 to 1870 and for the New York Sun from 1875-1897. In 1880 while as a guest of honour at a banquet of leading journalists , he was offered a ‘toast to the independent press’ and he outraged his colleagues by replying:

“There is no such thing, at this state of the world’s history, in America, as an independent press. You know it and I know it. There is not one of you who dares to write your honest opinions, and if you did, you know beforehand that it would never appear in print. I am paid weekly for keeping my honest opinion out of the paper I am connected with. Others of you are paid similar salaries for similar things, and any of you who would be so foolish as to write honest opinions would be out on the streets looking for another job. If I allowed my honest opinions to appear in one issue of my paper, before twenty-four hours, my occupation would be gone. The business of the journalists is to destroy the truth, to lie outright, to pervert, to vilify, to fawn at the feet of mammon, and to  sell his country and his race for his daily bread. You know it and I know it, and what folly is this toasting an independent press? We are tools and vassals of rich men behind the scenes. We are the jumping jacks, they pull the strings and we dance. Our talents, our possibilities and our lives are all the property of other men. We are intellectual prostitutes”.   READ MORE

MSM control is as much (or more) about what they don’t say as what they do.

silence-390331_1280.jpg

Note what they’re not mentioning about 1080:

  • the dodgy goings on following the poisoning of the Putaruru family (failure to heed the opinion of the Doctors early in the piece & test for 1080)
  • the NZ Govt lab’s loss of the young woman’s heart whose Doctor suspected 1080 poisoning
  • that there is no antidote to 1080
  • that most other countries have banned 1080
  • that farmers are asked to hide in the paperwork that their stock died of 1080 poisoning
  • that DoC didn’t test 89 dead kiwi for 1080 poisoning (why wouldn’t you?)
  • that 1080 kills every oxygen breathing organism & does not (cannot) target pests only
  • that the NZ Govt changed the law recently so as they could drop 1080 into the waterways without a consent from Councils
  • that in the recent environmental court hearing to stop the Hunua Ranges drop, DoC’s lawyers asked the judge for their scientist to not be cross examined
  • that DoC’s science of justification of 1080 use doesn’t match the independent reviews
  • that there are inconsistencies in the information they present us with

I could go on.
It is as much about what is omitted as what is told to you. Try and comment on those news items and see the control go into action.

The image below I found online (please advise if it’s yours*) …. it so graphically describes what words never could. Quite appropriately also is the colour of the feed trough contents. The same as that of 1080 & the illusory clean green NZ. Your Govt has done a great job of rebranding the deadly poison that is odourless & colourless & has no antidote. As NZ’s Dr Charlie Baycroft warned us recently, if you die from 1080 poisoning no one will know.

On the brighter side, the hikoi and protests on the 8th September have made an impact for sure. This is evidenced by the subsequent ramping up by mainstream of pro 1080 damage control.

A Hunua Ranges 1080 drop in 1994 left Auckland’s water treatment filters packed with poison pellets

With the Hunua Ranges 1080 drop about to happen following a brief foray in court to stop it, where the judge deemed it should go ahead anyway in spite of 19 Doctors writing to the government cautioning about health risks. Not to mention DoC’s lawyers asking that their scientist not be cross examined… how dodgy is that? They just plow on regardless & ignore the voice of the people. Getting very fascist isn’t it? Meanwhile, down in the Wairarapa school children have fallen ill from something initially witnessed by a child as dropping from a plane, now not as the story evolves & gets ‘curiouser’ by the minute, a great diversion nevertheless, and mainstream whore media is in full on damage control mode.

Copy of 26994348_2051229438490705_794147738856288614_n.jpg

The Hunua Ranges were also aerially 1080-poisoned in 1994, and the late Bill (William) Benfield (read more about Bill at the end of the article*) had this to say in his book titled “The Third Wave: Poisoning the Land”:

“For Auckland there was the interesting incident from the Hunua drop. The water treatment station at Papakura operated automatically, but if there was a problem, the system could be overridden by phone in an emergency.

Apparently a series of filters blocked and the phone override control did not shut the system down, so someone had to go out to find the problem.
What they found were filters packed with 1080 poison pellets, their deadly load having dissolved into the city’s water supply.

As the whole business was hushed up, no-one probably knew what was to blame for a dose of Monday morningitis sweeping the city, as well as a possible spike in the number of miscarriages and teratogenic effects (extremely low dose effects such as impaired development that can occur in the very early stages of the foetus) in children.”

“The drop was done for the Auckland Regional Council. A separate entity, Auckland Water, was not happy, and through them, Friends of the Earth managed to get in with the monitoring, hence the information re Hochstetter’s frogs. In the course of it, they learned of the problem at the Papakura filters. Auckland Water was very unhappy, but it was too late by the time they found out.”

Council approves aerial 1080 poison drops next year in the Hunua Ranges, after the operation was last carried out in 2015.

DoC 1080 drop kills 8 cattle – farmers tell their story (the GrafBoys)

Published on Sep 21, 2018

On the 6th of September the Department of Conservation aerially spread 1080 poison bait across the Mapara Reserve. The baits were also spread less than 200 metres from the Stone family home. 8 cows were killed as a result of the operation, and in this exclusive interview, the farmers involved discuss what happened, and why they’re at odds with the Department of Conservation…. click the link to view the interview … https://youtu.be/uLV1uNaTlA0

In 2007 an International Animal Welfare Journal published a RSPCA paper by Dr M Sherley deeming that: “1080 IS NOT A HUMANE POISON”

Note: you can hear Dr Miranda Sherley speak in the GrafBoys’ doco “Poisoning Paradise“. There are graphic descriptions and footage of the agony 1080’d animals go through. A veterinarian has commented that dying from 1080 poison is like two days of slow electrocution.

RSPCA MEDIA RELEASE 2007

We can no longer kid ourselves that 1080 is an acceptable option; we urgently need to focus efforts on finding ways to make 1080 more humane, or otherwise finding more humane ways to control pest animals … Dr M Sherley

A new report into the use of sodium fluroacetate (or 1080) in Australia has found it is an
inhumane poison, and has called for urgent research into improving the humaneness of
vertebrate pest control methods in this country.
The report, written by RSPCA Australia’s Dr Miranda Sherley, has been published in the current edition of the highly respected Animal Welfare journal from the UK-based Universities Federation for Animal Welfare.
Dr Sherley said despite its widespread use, the animal welfare implications of 1080 baiting have received little attention. There has been ongoing research into the ecological impacts of using 1080 as well as a high level of public concern regarding the effects of the poison on non-target animals, including pets or working dogs that might accidentally pick up the baits, as well as native wildlife, said Dr Sherley.
However, we were concerned to further investigate what level of pain and suffering was caused by 1080 on any vertebrate animal, including the target animals  which, we should remember, are also very much able to experience pain and suffering and deserve no less compassion in the way we deal with them, she said.
Dr Sherley said a range of criteria ñ including studying how the poison works, speed of death, behaviour of affected animals and long-term effects on survivors – were used to scientifically assess how humane the use of 1080 is as a method of pest control.
Human cases of 1080 poisoning are also helpful in understanding the effects on other animals: while conscious, people report feeling pain and distress, and through detailed hospital records we are also able to better track their recovery and any longer term effects, she said. Based on the evidence available, our conclusion is that animals affected by 1080 do not die a quick and humane death; rather, they suffer a range of potentially painful and distressing symptoms, often over a period of hours,î said Dr Sherley.
We can no longer kid ourselves that 1080 is an acceptable option; we urgently need to focus efforts on finding ways to make 1080 more humane, or otherwise finding more humane ways to control pest animals.

In spite of a signed letter to Govt by 19 NZ Doctors concerned about 1080 health risks, the Hunua Ranges drop is going ahead!

Note: remember people, this has been in court (big thanks to Sue Grey, lawyer) and DoC’s lawyers asked the judge for their scientist to NOT be cross examined. How dodgy is that? And the drop is going ahead. No surprizes there. See the Court approval here.

IMMEDIATE PRESS RELEASE*

THE INCREDIBLE LETTER BELOW HAS BEEN PREPARED BY DOCTORS WHO ARE CONCERNED ABOUT 1080 POISON BEING DEPOSITED IN DRINKING WATER

Open letter to the Government, Friday, 21st September 2018.

As doctors, we are extremely concerned about the health risk of depositing poisoned bait over 22,500 hectares of the Hunua water catchment area. Specifically, we are concerned about Sodium Fluoroacetate (SMFA / 1080), a known deadly poison which is known to cause sub-lethal effects on reproduction and is classified as a teratogen, having potential to contaminate the Auckland water supply.

There is no effective antidote for 1080 poisoning in humans.

We are extremely concerned that public officials are not adopting a far more precautionary approach to the safety of the Auckland water catchment, especially when the effects of 1080, a highly soluble poison, is not quantifiably able to be tested on how it affects the health of humans.

Studies show that 1080 affects the reproductive organs, the cardiac system, and respiratory system in mammals. There is no safe minimal level known and water testing and sampling after aerial 1080 application cannot prudently protect the public from risk of exposure from this poison.

As doctors, we are responsible for the health of individuals and communities. Therefore, we ask the government to immediately stop the usage of sodium fluoroacetate which has potential to contaminate the New Zealand water supply.

Some very unpleasant home truths from a Kiwi Ex-1080 poison worker

From tasmaniantimes.com

A pest worker who worked for a New Zealand local council Environment Waikato for two years, has damned 1080 poison as cruel and destructive of bird life.

Graeme Merekara Shelford, now resident in Australia, said he had a mixture of sadness and anger over the inhumane nature of the poison and that contrary to the claims of government departments and councils using the toxin, it was killing the vast numbers of bird life.

“Numerous times I was told 1080 doesn’t kill anything but possums. I was just ignorant of the damage because of what I was told, but I learned firsthand that is just not true,” he said.

The poison is used by government agencies and local councils to kill predators supposedly annihilating native birds but was killing birds themselves and insects, food for insectivorous birds such as robins and fantails.

Graeme Shelford was involved in trapping, using 1080 and also aerial drops of the poison, which often involved visiting farmers’ properties to talk to landowners before using 1080. His boss was frequently involved in arguments with farmers.

“The farmers looked at us as if we were taking their farms. They didn’t want the toxic stuff. Many of them knew how nasty 1080 is.”

DoC’s latest by-kill – 10 cows poisoned by 1080, 13 Sept, 2018, bees feeding on carcasses

The farm with the cow deaths adjoins Mapara Wildlife Reserve, administered by the NZ Department of Conservation. 1080 baits were photographed in the neighbouring farm paddock. Bees could be seen feeding on the poisoned carcasses…  so 1080 is potentially going into our NZ honey!!!

This is not an irregular occurrence folks, remember the news hitherto hidden from the ’90s of 570+ dead sheep, reported by Dr Meriel Watts! See the working document on poisoning by 1080 being compiled still as we speak. Since publishing some of these farm deaths it’s become very apparent by feedback from farmers that we are only seeing the tip of the iceberg. Remember, the incidents are hidden by DoC in the paper work.

Timaru’s ban 1080 protest

Thanks to Darrell McGrath for this fantastic coverage of the Timaru protest on Saturday 8th September. They had a great turnout. Well done Timaru!

Darrell McGrath

What can one say, Timaru you did a great job in turning up to a very important cause.
8th of September 2018 will go down in the record books for the amount of people who came together, to stand together and to voice their concern over the use of a poison, 1080.
Throughout New Zealand, from the Cape to Bluff, over the last 5-6 months, two blokes set about creating awareness on both islands. Alan and Emile began the HIKOI OF A POISONED NATION.
Incredibly brave move as it was the cold winter months and the 8th Sept was the day they would congregate in Wellington outside the Beehive.
Not sure on the actual number, but with Wellington holding the main event, many, many towns throughout both islands, came together in full support for the banning of 1080.
I was born and bred here in Timaru, I went away for a few years but returned. Only the day before (the 7th) I saw some post that was looking like a typical Timaru response, ONLY 6 were showing as going. I thought that was just typical of Timaru, so many voice their own opinion, so many not having much knowledge on many topics, but when action takes place, you don’t see them.
I was absolutely wrapped in what i saw outside the Timaru City Council building. One by one, the people gathered and in the matter of 4–50minutes, an incredibly great turn out.
Well done to ALL who showed, well done to the ones who organized the Timaru 1080 Gathering and as we all get together, country wide, lets hope that common sense takes place and this government actually KILLS 1080 ONCE AND FOR ALL.
I see many posts where the blame points to the immediate government, it can’t just be blamed on this one, as over the last 30 years, this criminal element has been going on through many puppets, of different parties.
If this Government now, run my Jacinda Adern wants to put herself and party on the map of good, NOW IS THE TIME. KILL KILL KILL 1080!!!

Timaru, this video is for you, all those that supported a worthy cause in exposing and bringing an end to this democidal ingredient.

DoC’s lawyers ask the judge that their scientist not be questioned in the Hunua Ranges 1080 drop case

A wee ‘small’ reminder of the honesty of the plebs who run the NZ corporation …

Remember this post on social media? September just gone? QUOTE:

“I was there last week
Doc wouldn’t let our lawyer cross examine their scientists and court allowed that. Lawyer won hands down against doc
They couldn’t prove 1080 safety…..TOTAL CORRUPTION
Our lawyer proved by DoC’s own files they were lying …but we LOST”

NOTE: SINCE THIS POSTED, I’VE HEARD THE DROP IS NOT GOING AHEAD AT THIS STAGE. STILL IN COURT…. (PS 19/1/2019 … it DID of course go ahead).

Why do they not want their scientist cross examined? Couldn’t stand the heat? Don’t have the back up science for their data? Could be anybody’s guess but certainly not rocket science. Whatever side of the fence you sit on the 1080 issue, this is about justice of which there appears to be very little these days, remembering Graeme Sturgeon for instance & his ‘win’ that left him with $23K court costs. Looking from afar here we are being sent a very clear message which I’m sure you can figure out for yourselves.
