Council corruption – two Horowhenua Councilors concerned that decisions are being co-opted by a select group of non-elected representatives of the business community – close associates of Mayor Duffy

The Horowhenua Dictrict Council’s Ross Campbell, elected representative of the Miranui
Ward, expresses his growing concern about the way things at the HDC are run, in particular, with whom important information is shared and the way decisions are being made.
Horowhenua Mayor Duffy has a select Committee of close business associates – a non-elected, hand picked business group with no sworn allegiance to the district, that tells the elected councilors how to vote. Cr Campbell is not alone in his concern.
Fellow Councilor Michael Feyen of Foxton confirms what Cr Campbell is saying … “Take the time to have a listen to Councillor Ross Campbell’s very good summation of what we are up against in this HDC District. If the Horowhenua wants to progress it won’t be under the current regime.” Both Cr Feyen and Cr Campbell speak out regularly about the polluting practices of local government. Cr Campbell was allegedly assaulted in 2004 for his active part in this.
Readers may also recall former Councilor Mrs Anne Hunt expressed identical concerns earlier this year describing how they were coerced to vote ‘correctly’ using bullying tactics.

“My name is Ross Campbell and as most of you know I’m the District Councilor for the Miranui Ward which takes in Tokomaru & Shannon, Opiki, Buckley & Mangaore and this lovely part of the district of Miranui.
I’ve got a few things that concern me when I’m in Council. One of them is these … we get a lot of information at Council … we get information from the NZTA you know, that’s the roading people; we get Government departments telling us all sorts of statistics and things, what they are likely to do and what they want to do. We get a lot of information from statistics of course, we get market trends, we get inquiries from overseas investments … we get information from Regional Councils, Health Boards and so it goes on … there’s a lot of information coming in. This information is meant to be used in briefings to councillors, to help them in their decisions, planning the district, and which way we want to go, if we want to go forward or we want to go sideways or whatever the case might be, and so we use this information to help us make decisions. But this concern is something that I want to bring to you … it’s not always the case.
Our Mayor … some of you might not know this … our Mayor has formed a group of his closest business associates. They’re the people who he mixes with. And together with these associates there are developers, there are retailers, there are manufacturers, contractors, who have been selected by him. They’ve formed themselves into what we call an Economic Development Committee. That’s what the Council calls it but I actually call it an Economic Advantage Committee … over their competitors. You see all the information that we receive is passed on to this committee who are not elected people … they’ve not been elected to be there by you, who may be arguably your closest competitor in your business, and these people all get an unfair advantage over their closest rivals, and that rival could be you.
Because of all this information coming in, they know where the trends are, they know the direction the council’s thinking. They are privy to information that gives them an advantage over others, especially at this time when we councillors are told often to be quiet about the different possibilities that may happen.
These business associates of the Mayor actually came to our table at Council the other night and addressed us and advised us to vote for the policies that would benefit them!
What is that? To me that’s insider trading. I call it that but you may call it something different. But I’m not allowed.
This handful of business associates that our Mayor has selected are receiving an advantage over their competitors, and it’s just not right. These folks have not been elected by you. They’ve never sworn allegiance to the district, and are being rewarded for their faithfulness to the Mayor.
Go figure. What do you think? Just last week a decision was made to announce to the retailers in Levin as to where the road of national significance was going. But we wouldn’t announce it until February 2017. As it was told to us by the Mayor we shouldn’t announce it before the election as the Mayor, because of this, could get skinned alive. So just whose interests are we looking after? Folks, we must get out there and vote, and elect those you trust … not those who are there to furnish the Mayor’s ego and their own business pockets. That is one of my concerns and over the next few weeks, I’m going to share some of the other concerns I have. They are concerns that I believe you need to know about … that we haven’t got a Council that’s working directly for you … we’ve got a Council that is working for the few.”

Councils nowadays are fine in their rhetoric, or should I say spin? What they are doing is regularly a very different matter. They should be making decisions DEMOCRATICALLY … on behalf of ratepayers and residents, and not on behalf of the Mayor’s close business associates!!

The website and advocacy group GMO Free USA has gained popularity nationwide for taking on and refuting GMO myths through social media awareness and education, and lately they’ve begun branching out by conducting lab tests on popular foods.
The lab tests are important because GMO labeling is still a right not offered to United States consumers as it is in 60+ countries around the world.
In order to test the Froot Loops for harmful chemicals as well as GMO material, a lab sample was submitted of Froot Loops to a certified lab in 2014.
It found that a full 100% of the corn in Froot Loops was GMO, through a quantitative PCR test by DNA analysis that found sequences that are known to be present in insecticide producing Bt and Roundup Ready corn.

Doctors Receiving ‘Merck Vaccination Service Awards’ for Pushing Vaccines
Where does your doctor’s allegiance lie? Banana Republic: the ugly story behind New Zealand’s most popular fruit
Here is how the corporate world we live in oppresses the vulnerable. (This is why Key & his cronies are for TPPA). Corporations now set up shop wherever there is cheap labour to be found. Six dollars per 18 hour day in this instance! Dole in this instance pays 27 cents in the Philippines per kg of bananas, that then sell for $3-4 per kg in NZ. Vulnerable families who have frequently been deprived of their ancestral lands, as was the case way back when the colonial predators first set foot, are forced to work for the invader who only visits their shores in search of investment opportunities … resources, cheap labour, a chance to make a buck basically. All the colonial claptrap about bringing civilization is just that … corporations owe their first and only allegiance to their shareholders. Human beings who work for them, who buy their goods, are not a consideration at all. Maximize profits is their bottom line. Remember this when you eat your bananas. Speak up & expose these predators for what they are. And spare a thought for the young parents who have little time to give to their families because of this.

From the top of a rusting observation tower, the leaves stretch out in every direction: thick, glossy, utterly uniform, as far as the eye can see.

Banana bunches wrapped in blue plastic hang like alien egg sacs from the branches. The plantations cover around 10,000 hectares, encircling small villages, networks of roads, and the entire lives of the growers, who work, eat, sleep, live and die among the trees.
She and her team work 15 to 18 hours per day to meet their packing targets of around 800 boxes. For that they are paid 200 pesos, the equivalent of NZ$6.
Francisco B. Milallos, 65, has worked here his whole life, but this season he was too old to be granted a contract. He helps his wife with her work, and today has taken it upon himself to act as guide. Pausing to scuff the ground, he spits, and sweeps out an arm to gesture at the trees.
“So! This is where your bananas come from.”
Filipino workers forced to work 18 hour days, paid as little as 30 cents per hour, constantly exposed to toxic chemicals, and threatened with violence or death when they campaign for better conditions.

New Zealand’s electricity watchdog is not fit for purpose and is working with big energy companies to destroy the future of rooftop solar power in New Zealand, according to Greenpeace NZ.
Yesterday, the Electricity Authority (EA) ruled that a controversial move by Hawke’s Bay lines company, Unison, to charge its solar users an extra fee was not in breach of any regulations.
The ruling came on the heel of public uproar, which saw formal complaints being laid with the authority, and a petition asking it to protect solar collecting more than 30,000 signatures in just three weeks.
Greenpeace climate campaigner, Simon Boxer, says the ruling now gives lines companies throughout the country the green light to follow Unison and put a tax on solar.
“This is a blatant move by the EA to wash its hands of protecting and promoting renewable energy like solar so that it can continue to massage New Zealand’s electricity monopoly,” he says.
“It’s no secret that the EA isn’t big a fan of solar. In the past it has even publicly advised New Zealanders not to rush into installing it. By giving the nod for Unison to penalise solar, the EA is effectively attempting to kill the uptake of solar in our near future.
Taranaki Regional council Wastes $85,000 fighting Media’s Exposure of their Polluting Practices
Within hours of the first story airing, the council announced it was no longer allowing fracking waste to be disposed of on landfarms.
However, the council laid several complaints with the Broadcasting Standards Authority contesting many aspects of RNZ’s coverage of landfarming.
Documents obtained under the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act reveal the council incurred $85,000 in legal costs to challenge the stories.
The council argued the coverage amounted to “misinformation” in “attack-style journalism” which was “of grave concern and… no service to the public”.
However, the authority found the coverage was fair and accurate and the council was “disingenuous” in claiming fracking waste had only been disposed of historically on the landfarms.

Banker Key is Quietly Oiling the US War Machine
Our attention was recently drawn to the announcement by Prime Minister Key’s American friends (those friends whose bank he has shares in & has us heavily indebted to) of their contemplating a compulsory draft of their women to the war machine. Most of us are aware I’m sure of Key’s allegiance to the stars and stripes, but does his allegiance have any bounds I wonder?
Stepping back a little, I’ve noticed lately a few changes happening in Aotearoa that have been overshadowed somewhat by the current housing crisis. A convenient diversion. With thousands of Kiwis homeless, 33,000 homes purchased by offshore speculators sitting empty in Auckland, and thousands of state homes being flicked off to real estate interests (and whatever happened to the sales to other social housing providers?) the government/corporation is now offering $5000 to beleaguered families to migrate to the provinces! Quite a bit of social engineering going on here by all appearances … and Key says they’re going to fix the problem with his new $1 billion initiative. Some predictable lollipops with election year approaching.
He has also recently announced however, that he is set to spend an incredible $20 billion on our defence force capability. One billion on the housing crisis and twenty times that on the military? Clearly, that is where Prime Minister Key’s priorities lie. Not at home with the homeless, rather, abroad fighting the enemies of the United States of America. That nation that has killed 20 million people in 37 nations since World War II.
As anybody who does their research knows, the well oiled US war machine is a corporate machine. (And the US of course is not the only country that profits from the arms trade. The British Royals (and here) are not averse to trading in blood money either). Major General Smedley Butler, a US authority on that topic… having served more than three decades in the military … wrote a book about the insights he gained therein. Wars are essentially bankers’ wars. Corporate wars.
We have all been well conditioned to believe these wars are for ‘King and Country’ … as our beloved forbears were, 70 odd million of whom died in the last World War … or, nowadays, wars against terrorism, the ones that started with the very dodgy 9/11 that looked extremely like a controlled demolition. These wars, as ever, are ostensibly about imposing ‘democracy’ on countries that didn’t request it, while really about siphoning off and profiting from their resources.

All Wars are Bankers’ Wars
The war machine is an effective time-tested tool of certain wealthy families … the Rothschilds, the Rockefellers and their ilk. As Mrs Gutle Schnapper Rothschild said … “If my sons did not want war, there would be none”….and she should know her own sons I’m sure. She sounds obscenely proud of her offspring and their dubious ‘accomplishments’.
239 Years of Mostly Wars
So, if there’s one thing the US does well … and often, it’s war. See a 239 Year Timeline of America’s Involvement in military conflict, spanning from 1776 to 2011. This country that prides itself on being a peaceful, peace making nation has never in fact gone a decade with out war, to the extent no President can be considered a peace time President. The only time the US has gone for five years without war was during the Great Depression … and we know that financial depressions have always been artificially created, by the very same people who are fomenting the wars. Killing Children
As one US armchair proponent has said quite infamously … “it [war] is worth it” (that being the killing of 500,000 innocent Iraqi children, the real victims of these hideous war games). Wars to warmongers are “worth it” because they make money … lots of it. Make no mistake, this is blood money. Nobody of course highlights this point when rolling out the rationale for increased military spending.

That great nation has indeed taken armchair warfare to a whole new level in the form of drone warfare. In fighting that eternal war on terror, from the comfort of an armchair, one operator can wipe out whole families of suspected terrorists with the push of a button, just like they do in war games online. No trenches required.

Key has Been Quietly Initiating Changes in our National Stance about War
Now, what I’ve noticed looking beyond the housing conundrum and the age-old fomenters of war who are now publicly espousing their New World Order, is that our once clean green, GE and nuclear free paradise (not) has been undergoing some changes in her stance about war … courtesy of John Key.
Late last year NZ hosted a weapons conference (and here) in our capital, Wellington, amidst largely ignored protests. Where once we had a nuclear free stance that prevented nuclear warships from visiting our harbours, the Daily Blog reported in April this year that “In November [courtesy of John Key]… an American warship will be entering Auckland Harbour for the first time in 32 years for the 75th anniversary of the NZ Navy.” Clearly there’s no apology about that.
Now Kiwis with their ears to the ground have noticed the change in drills the military have been having in recent years. We have a mingling of the military with the public, carrying arms and playing out scenarios where the public are included. Operation Katipo in 2013 was one of those, with forces from the United States, Australia, Britain, Canada, France, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Singapore and Tonga.
“The operation cements the complete restoration of New Zealand’s military alliance with the US as part of the Obama administration’s strategic “pivot” or “rebalancing” to the Indo-Pacific to encircle China, which the US views as a threat to its dominance in the region. Smaller exercises were held with the US last year, marking the first time American troops had trained in NZ since a partial rift during the 1980s over Wellington’s anti-nuclear policy.”
“Operation Southern Katipo is further evidence that New Zealand’s ruling elite is dragging the country into Washington’s preparations for war—without any democratic discussion and behind the backs of the population. Despite the exercise’s scale, it has received little coverage in the media.”
In April this year (2016) Herald reported the opening of a new top class SAS training facility in Auckland. Key said the upgrade was needed because:
“… we now live in a world where there is some risk to New Zealand. He said despite that risk being much lower than in other environments, the Government could not rule it out when the likes of Isis are using social media to target people, “even as far away as New Zealand. Mr Key said in the event that New Zealand was subject to a domestic terror threat, the SAS would be used if necessary”.
So, watch this space people. A little scratch below the surface reveals that Key is more intent on war than peace, on currying the favour of his favourite nation and by all appearances on feathering his own already well lined nest, than he is on working for New Zealand as he claimed pre election. Why else does a leader tax his own wealthy friends 2.8% and the average workers 28%?

NZ government in denial over housing crisis
The myopia of our corporate reps … people are living in their cars & they are turning a very blind eye!
New Zealand has got a previously unheard of problem – homeless families are sleeping in cars, while nearly half of the houses in our largest city Auckland (49%) are being snapped up by foreign investors and then sitting there empty! The Chinese were the biggest group. Last year in June it was 41% of Auckland homes.
John Key, our prime minister and former banker who worked at Merrill Lynch, glibly believed most of the investors in the property market would be locals. It was clear the government either didn’t have a clue or didn’t care. NZ doesn’t have a foreign buyers register or any rules around speculation on houses.
Last year a whistle-blower from the real estate industry said mainland Chinese money snapped up at least 80 per cent of residential sales in parts of Auckland in March but were nearer 90 per cent in May, 2015. Of course…

John Key’s government has managed to continue the work begun by Ruth Richardson and has obviously learned from Jenny Shipley’s mistake of not ensuring public acceptance of drastic welfare change. Ruth Richardson’s Mother of All Budgets is regarded as the most significant step in dismantling our welfare state. Drastically cutting welfare benefits was a deliberate strategy to drive down wage costs. It was Richardson’s belief that maintaining unemployment at around 5% and keeping welfare payments low, workers would then be more likely to accept lower wages. Child poverty was around 8% pre 1991 but escalated to 15% by 1992. While there was some reduction under the previous Labour Government, with the introduction of the Working for Families tax credit, child poverty is now close to 30% in 2016.

1080 Poison Dropped Directly into Auckland’s Waterways in 2015 – With Regional Council’s Consent

The Auckland Council stated in its pacifying document that it used “highly accurate GPS application technology to apply bait”.
The truth is that GPS technology was used to ensure every stream and watercourse within the drop boundaries were spread with 1080 poison.
The Auckland Regional Public Health Service set conditions “to protect human health”, and also helped with the “drinking water monitoring plan”, stated Auckland Council in a project document. However, it’s sobering to note that in 2008 the Ministry of Health stated “To date there are no known epidemiological studies that have been carried out in relation to 1080 and potential adverse health effects on humans.” It’s now 2016, and still no studies on chronic impacts have been done, but the areas the poison is being dropped into our environment continues to increase ….

Amidst a Chronic Housing Shortage Auckland Council kicks out 14 families to make way for a carpark?
Oh the depths to which our leaders have sunk! Fourteen families evicted and told to find housing elsewhere? And for a carpark? Here we have more of the sheer insanity in the decision-making ranks of our ‘paradise’ down under. People are living in cars, garages, sleeping rough, you name it, and they are demolishing perfectly good homes? On top of that we have the government/corporation (did you know your country is a corporation?) selling off our state housing stock & contemplating paying families $5,000 to relocate out of Auckland. What are they really up to?

Fourteen properties on the edge of Monte Cecilia Park in the Auckland suburb of Royal Oak are about to be bulldozed. What for?
They’re landscaping it and putting a carpark in.
At a time when we have a housing crisis and people are living in cars!
I know! I hear you!
The rationale on the Council’s website is even more ridiculous and downright insane.
They say the houses need to go as Auckland is growing and needs more open space. Hello? Don’t we also need more houses if we’re growing?
The Council also says removing the houses will improve access and visibility into the park.
It also “makes the most of the breath-taking views into Monte Cecilia Park with its gently sloping hills, majestic specimen trees and stately homestead,” Kataraina Maki, Auckland Council’s General Manager Community and Social Policy says on the website.
So apparently Aucklanders are more in need of parks than housing. This is just lunacy. We have people living in cars down the road in Mangere.
Time to wake up Auckland Council.

What Many Parents Don’t Know About the MMR Vaccine

The list of adverse reactions to the MMR vaccine, straight from Merck’s vaccine package inserts, is long and alarming. A shortened version of the vaccine damage associated with the MMR vaccine includes vomiting, diarrhea, anaphylaxis, ear pain, nerve deafness, diabetes, arthritis, myalgia, encephalitis, febrile seizures, pneumonia, and death. “In some cases, the vaccine has caused the very diseases it is supposed to prevent … in the United States: over 75,000 adverse events have been reported from any combination of measles, mumps, and rubella vaccines”
A search of the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) database shows the following statistics from the United States: over 75,000 adverse events have been reported from any combination of measles, mumps, and rubella vaccines, including, most notably:
- 78 deaths
- 85 cases of deafness
- 48 cases of decreased eye contact
- 92 cases of developmental delay
- 855 reported cases of autism
- 116 cases of intellectual disability
- 401 reports of speech disorders
- 276 reports of loss of consciousness
- 143 cases of encephalitis
- 74 cases of meningitis
- 111 cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome
- 692 cases of gait disturbance (not being able to walk normally)
- 748 cases of hypokinesia (partial or complete loss of muscle movement)
- 653 reports of hypotonia (poor muscle tone)
- 4874 reports of seizures, including febrile convulsions and tonic clonic seizures
- 1576 cases of cellulitis (a potentially serious skin infection)
And finally, in some cases, the vaccine has caused the very diseases it is supposed to prevent, with the following data reported to VAERS:
- 147 cases of measles
- 384 cases of mumps
- 29 cases of rubella [3]
The number of adverse events following vaccination are vastly underreported, as acknowledged by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The National Vaccine Information Center estimates that less than one to ten percent of adverse reactions to vaccines are reported. Many of the numbers reported above could therefore be multiplied by one hundred to determine a more accurate amount of adverse reactions. [4, 5]

Corporations – Sucking our Planet Dry
A corporation has been defined as “… a business structure whose sole reason for existence is the earning of profits by manufacturing products for as little as possible and selling them for as much as possible. It does not matter whether the product does good or evil; what counts is that it be consumed – in ever-increasing quantities”.
(Note: therein lies the root of our whole recycling problem … think of all the packaging that goes with those products … plastic wrapping, meat trays, polystyrene and plastic bottles just for starters).
Giant multinational corporations have become society’s most dominant institution. As a student of social policy in the early 1980s I well recall being told there would come a day when corporations would control governments … difficult at the time to conceive of … nevertheless this is exactly what has happened. It was difficult to conceive because it was an era when unemployment was low, benefits for the few who required them were at a livable level and education was relatively free. We were a welfare state. That has changed for we were sharply reminded we were a capitalist welfare state.

Maori Leaders Standing up to Big Tobacco Corporates who Target the Vulnerable
Maori Party Co-Leader Marama Fox featured on the news on Saturday (25 June 2016) having walked out on a discussion with a tabacco company spokesman on TV3’s program ‘The Nation’. She testily put down her microphone and left the interview telling him he should “crawl back into the hole that is reserved for the corporate executioners”. I couldn’t help but agree with her sentiments. Interviewer Lisa Owen rebuked and reminded her that Imperial Tobacco’s Axel Gietz was an invited guest … we know what side she is on of course … serving her corporate employers.
The purpose of the discussion was the fact that NZ had decided to go down the road of compulsory plain tobacco packaging and Gietz had not ruled out the possibility of suing the NZ government for this.
“Imperial Tobacco make billions of dollars every year profiting off misery and death. You are a peddler of death, that is what you get your money from and … you come to NZ in some public service to help us in the debate when we already knows that it kills our children” … Maori Party Co-leader Marama Fox
“For the last 27 years I have not attended a funeral of someone in our family” said Fox, “and I’ve attended numerous funerals – who has died of natural causes”.
This was reminiscent of Hone Harawira’s challenges to the tobacco corporates. He often cites a statement by one of Big Tobacco’s CEOs:
“We don’t smoke this shit – we sell it. We reserve the right to smoke it, to the young, the poor, the black, and the stupid.”
Back in 2006 he questioned them on that statement at the launch of TOA (Tobacco Out of Aotearoa). Harawira said … “today we launch a campaign to rid our country of bastards who think like this, the companies they work for, and the poison they sell us”. Statistically he said, cigarette smoking accounts for one third of all Maori deaths and Maori women have the highest rate of lung cancer in the world. Tobacco also accounted for 4500 Kiwi deaths in 2006. (Read more about his campaign at this link).
Back in March 2010 at the Auckland hearings of the Māori Affairs Select Committee inquiry, British American Tobacco NZ (BAT NZ) representatives were grilled by a Select Committee that included Harawira, following their presentation on tobacco. (Read more on that at the link).
Targeting the Vulnerable
Whilst the point is always made by all sides of the argument that people have a choice, while that is true, I would add nevertheless that these companies are decidedly predatory. They aggressively target the young and vulnerable. This is documented in their own internal planning documents exposed in this documentary on how Indonesian children as young as two years old have an addiction to cigarette smoking. These companies target nations that have little or no regulatory frameworks around tobacco sales so they exist in the same time warp the West did back in the ’40s and ’50s when the medical profession was promoting tobacco as good for one’s health.
The point here is, the tobacco companies now know that smoking is a health risk, yet they are taking full advantage of the ignorance of this fact by poorer countries. Now if that is not predatory I don’t know what is.
If you doubt that children are targeted, check out this documentary on BAT which goes undercover and exposes their tactics, unashamedly targeting and recruiting eleven year old children. The children in the Indonesian link above believe that smoking will make them wise and intelligent and help them pass their exams.
They know no shame so why not shame them publicly, like Fox and Harawira have? Why pander to these wealthy “corporate executioners” who have no qualms about trading in children’s lives.
Corporations
Corporations, for any who aren’t aware, are about profits not people. A timely reminder. Our country NZ is a corporation as also are many if not most of its former so called government departments. So also are our District Councils. Again, their focus is profits and the fact they are corporations explains their flagrant disregard nowadays for democratic processes. Corporations simply aren’t democratic. They operate for the shareholder first and foremost. They need to be challenged.
The same medical industry that claimed smoking was good for our health is still at it by either condoning or failing to speak out about the health risks of other products like glyphosate, fluoride, GM food and mercury . Corporations often conduct little if any research before their wares are released … what is required is often done in secret and the results are often kept from the public. Then they foist them upon the public without prior consent and often without our knowledge, as has been the case with GM food. We are not guinea pigs and it will only be when people like Fox and Harawira stand up and challenge them, and when we the public refuse to buy their wares, that any changes are going to come about. As for our media, having lost any last vestiges of ethics and honesty as they continue their corporate mergers … there is little point in listening to them any more.
Stand up folks and put a stop to their monopoly.

WINZ takes ‘let them eat cake’ to a whole new level – while white collar corporate criminals go free
This really takes the cake so to speak, bringing ‘let them eat cake’ to a whole new level! The Daily Blog reports on the reception a legally blind woman had from her case worker recently in Auckland. Firstly she says to her “you don’t look blind” then she pulls out a piece of paper, hands it to her, folds her arms and demands she read it and prove her wrong! These are the depths to which our government/corporate offices have sunk nowadays. Bonuses are earned (I’ve heard from a former WINZ worker) by those who manage to save the company funds.
There are humane workers at WINZ offices who respect people. But there are also many, unfortunately, like this poor specimen, who humiliate and denigrate their customers (forgetting that without their customers they would have no job themselves). These stories have been rolling out of late with the current homelessness crisis and people sleeping rough in the cities, or in their cars even. We’ve also heard stories of people with cancer and leukemia being told to look for work, the latter in particular, a man with two children to support, and at the time sick in his hospital bed.
This attitude reflects the great disrespect our corporately biased system has for the lower income bracket particularly those without jobs and in this case, the disabled. White collar workers on the other hand, who defraud the system are treated very favourably, particularly by the justice system.
Dr Lisa Marriott, a Senior Lecturer in the School of Accounting and Commercial Law at Victoria University, has stated that:
“Benefit fraud cost New Zealand $22 million in 2010, or around $5 for each New Zealander. While it is difficult to get accurate figures for tax evasion, the Tax Justice Network estimates New Zealand missed out on more than $7.4 billion of tax revenue in 2011, or around $1,500 per New Zealander…
So the figures for tax evasion are phenomenal while they are relatively small for benefit fraud…”
On top of all this the corporate media makes much of the vilified beneficiary who cheats the tax payer of the said $5, whilst it seldom if ever mentions the white collar criminal who cheats the same for $1500. Indeed it quite blatantly misleads the NZ public with its failure to mention these stats, stirring up hatred and disinfo against the less fortunate in our midst.
So much for justice and equity in our once prosperous welfare state. And let’s not forget, we once had full employment in this nation of ours. There was a job for everybody. And what happened to change that? It wasn’t the fault of people on benefits as the corporate media often subtly misleads us to believe. Let’s lay the blame squarely where it belongs…Rogernomics and the new neoliberal experiment … irresponsible governments that borrowed us into the big black hole we are now in. That has left an ever widening gap between rich and poor, and a crisis of homelessness that isn’t going to go away any time soon. Finally, keep in mind we are a corporation and corporations are about profits and not people.
