EWNZ comment: I recall a friend’s hubby having a heart attack back in the late 80s, at 43. It was noticeably rare & met with great shock and unbelief at the time. Look around now however and you will hear and read of many very young folk having heart attacks. Especially since around 2020. I wonder why that was? When a 45-year-old survives a heart attack, doctors and family members typically assume recovery will be swift.  Youth equals resilience, right?  A new study published in the European Heart Journal has shattered that dangerous assumption, revealing that nearly 1 in 10 heart attack patients under 55 are severely frail, and their mortality risk is dramatically higher than anyone expected.

What makes this discovery particularly alarming is that these young patients face a nearly fourfold higher risk of premature death compared to older heart attack survivors with the same frailty level.  Yet conventional cardiology continues screening older patients while younger ones slip through the cracks, unidentified, untreated, and dying an average of six years earlier than expected.

Massive study exposes hidden vulnerability in young heart attack survivors

Researchers analyzed 931,133 heart attack cases across England and Wales, dividing patients into three age groups: under 55, ages 55-74, and 75 and older.  Among patients under 55, researchers classified 3,710 – roughly 2.4% – as severely frail.

Young severely frail patients showed an adjusted hazard ratio of 6.69 for all-cause mortality within one year.  Compare that to 4.33 for middle-aged patients and just 2.31 for older patients.  Young frail patients faced 3.51 times higher mortality risk than older frail patients, a complete reversal of what doctors expect based on age alone.

Years of life lost painted an even grimmer picture.  Young severely frail heart attack patients died an average of 6.1 years earlier than expected.

Young frailty looks nothing like what doctors learned in medical school

Western medicine defines frailty through geriatric symptoms: slow walking speed, weakness, falls, and cognitive decline.  This outdated framework blinds doctors to what’s actually happening in younger populations – rapid accumulation of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, not physical deterioration.

Young, frail heart attack patients showed dramatically higher rates of diabetes, hypertension, peripheral vascular disease, and early-onset heart failure.  They had higher body mass index, were more likely to smoke, and had a family history of coronary artery disease.

The study also exposed troubling care disparities.  Severely frail patients across all age groups demonstrated lower adherence to quality care standards: delayed procedures, fewer cardiology admissions, lower medication prescription rates, and minimal cardiac rehabilitation referrals.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are prescribed extensively throughout the world. In the U.S., nearly 70 million prescriptions are written and 30 billion doses are consumed each year when over-the-counter NSAIDs are included.1

In many cases NSAIDs are prescribed to treat back pain, headaches, menstrual pain and arthritis. While most consider the medication innocuous, the truth is that by conservative estimates over 105,000 people are hospitalized each year from the side effects of NSAIDsand over 16,000 of those die.2

Side effects from long-term use of NSAIDs range from hearing loss to gastrointestinal bleeding. Unfortunately, there is no specific antidote for NSAID poisoning, which may lead to metabolic acidosis, multisystem organ failure and death.3

Research has now discovered side effects from NSAIDs may occur even with short-term use, increasing your risk of a heart attack in the first week to month if you take the medication consistently.4 The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recognized the risks associated with NSAIDs since 2004.5

In order to review all studies involving NSAIDs, the FDA also recommended limiting use of over-the-counter NSAIDs. This review order came on the heels of rofecoxib’s (Vioxx) withdrawal from the market due to an increase in cardiovascular risk.6 Shortly after the withdrawal of Vioxx, another NSAID, valdecoxib (Bextra), was pulled from the shelves due to increased risk of heart, stomach and skin problems that outweighed the benefits of using the drug.7

Such harmless benign looking little appliances, and so handy for our insanely sped up nowadays world. I’ve been laughed at for suggesting microwaves are harmful … that Russia banned them at one stage … thankfully the science is emerging. According to newly uncovered documents, in the 1960s the sugar industry began funding research to cast doubt on sugar’s role in heart disease, mainly by pointing the finger at fat instead.

A recently published analysis based on correspondence between a sugar trade group and researchers from Harvard University clearly demonstrates how food and beverage makers actively shape the public’s understanding of nutrition for their own financial gain.

The Evidence

In 1964 a group known as The Sugar Association went over a campaign to address any “negative attitudes toward sugar” after studies linking sugar with heart disease began to emerge, according to documents that were dug up from the now public archives. The following year the group approved a project called “Project 226,” which involved paying researchers from Harvard the equivalent of todays $48,900 USD for an article reviewing scientific literature, supplying the materials they wanted reviewed and reviewing drafts of the article prior to publication.

The result was an article, published in 1967, which concluded there was “no doubt” that reducing cholesterol and saturated fat was the only dietary guideline necessary to prevent heart disease effectively. The consistency of the literature on fat and cholesterol were overstated by researchers, and studies on sugar were severely downplayed, according to the analysis.
