Facebook says it is developing what appears like a fairly fine-grained way of monitoring sounds occurring in enclosed spaces – spaces that would also be mapped for any objects they contain. And Facebook is relying on artificial intelligence (AI) of one kind or another to achieve this, said a blog post announcing “AI Habitat.”
As is often the case, this type of “arrangement” between ordinary users and a data-dependent and hungry tech juggernaut like Facebook, and the trade-off involved, doesn’t seem to be really worth it for users would have to wear “smart glasses” to allow this invasive system into their homes, and in exchange get trivial help from their AI assistants in checking whether the front door’s locked and finding a phone that’s ringing somewhere else in the apartment. If that’s all the benefit to the user wearing a pair of awkward “glasses” loaded with sensors probing the privacy of their home to the core – it truly sounds like the worst deal ever.

A closer look
For the past two days, tens of thousands of Belarusians flooded the streets of Minsk to continue pressuring for new elections.This is a culminated response to the August 9th elections, where far-right authoritarian incumbent Aleksandr Lukashenko claimed to win the election by 80+% of the vote. Citizens and election officials challenged that claim, with election site officials exposing massive disparities in their records compared to “official” state accounts. The protests have recurred each day and night since. Lukeshenko responded with a brutal crackdown on protesters. The reports documented that Belarus security forces viciously beat and detained peaceful protesters. People have been killed. Lukeshenko has indicated repeatedly that he has no intention of succumbing to pressure from the streets. “Until you kill me, there will not be any more elections,” he said. People were brought to pro-Lukashenko rallies by buses and coercion. Meanwhile, citizens demanding new elections continue gathering despite arrests, threats and more facts (previously suppressed by the country’s media) about the intensity of police brutality being revealed. Prior to the election, Lukeshenko dismantled election sites, intimidated journalists and arrested his competition.”
