How does a hegemon exercise control?

The United States built the undersea cables that carry global Internet bandwidth. By 2002, less than 1 percent of that traffic moved between regions without passing through U.S. infrastructure. The NSA has direct access to those communications. The Treasury uses this access to enforce financial sanctions and freeze assets.

Now, in what Catherine Austin Fitts and John Titus describe as the most important story on their latest Money & Markets report, Iran says it wants to “extract value” by charging fees on the $10 trillion of transactions estimated to pulse through the Strait of Hormuz Internet cables.

What does this mean? As Catherine observes, if the U.S. dollar syndicate cannot protect or assert control over those cables and the related data, its entire control model is “toast.”

What happens when the infrastructure that maintains control becomes the focal point of sovereignty for the rest of the world?
