More than 150 million women worldwide take oral contraceptive pills. The prescribing documents for these drugs — written by the manufacturers, approved by regulators — run to dozens of pages each. They acknowledge blood clots, stroke, heart attack, cancer associations, depression, and suppressed sexual desire. They admit that the long-term effects of current formulations “remain to be determined.”
