After opening up New Zealand’s regional parks for mining,
The government realised that harvesting minerals from the sea floor is the new game in town.
International momentum and attention from businesses and government have spurred this move.
Currently, there are many countries looking at programs for exploitation.
New Zealand holds the 5th largest marine estate in the world.
Up to 200 Nautical Miles away from the land is marked as it’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ)
Accounting for roughly 1% of the planet’s surface,
So the potential mining interests and associated risks are voluminous to say the least.
New Zealand isn’t the first country to “OK” Seabed mining,
In the case of Papua New Guinea,
The Community didn’t know about it,
Until AFTER they’d already consented.
And the process for approval here, isn’t exactly above water either,
so to speak.

A subject that boils every curse word I can think of when talking seabed mining. I live on the west coast near “Taharoa Iron Sand Mining Ltd” a company run by overseas interest leased to them by local Maori claiming to be “kaitiaki “guardians of the land” while the sands disappear at extraordinary rates along with farm lands,cliffs and beach bach’s that have been there even longer.
A bit of context for understanding, close to 30 years ago, the mining company had a dredging ship that when visible at sea looked like a black dot on the horizon and only really visible when unloading 5 miles offshore. Now they have TWO ships 7times bigger and still dredging 5-7miles offshore, and in the last 10 years the sand dunes have vanished rapidly along with our Whānau land and beach bach which makes me wave my fists and curse at “hapu/Iwi “yes” family” for letting this happen, all so they can pay their mortgage’s. Climate Change, Mother Nature my buttocks… K.A.S.M.

Kia ora Jace. Yes these people are very clever at whose permission they seek. They cover all their bases. Like the colonial days isn’t it, divide & conquer tactic. I share your anger at all of that. That’s interesting how you’ve literally watched the disappearance of the sand! Getting serious. They would likely tout the lie ‘it’s global warming & rising sea levels’ to blame (as you say Mother Nature). My buttocks is right.
