Mount Maunganui landslide: Were warnings missed? A timeline of who knew what and when

Clearly some serious serious oversights made . The council guys came by and then drove off. Two different lots too. Characteristic really of previous disasters we’ve seen here. EWNZ

Questions are being asked about why campers weren’t evacuated from Mount Maunganui’s popular campground at the foot of the mountain before a deadly slip, despite a series of smaller slips that were reported to authorities. Six people were buried and inquiries have been launched. Michael Morrah and Alanah Eriksen, who have been on the ground in the past week, detail who knew what and when.

Two men observed warning signals in the terrain just hours prior. One out walking at 6am phoned 111 but was told, ring council. He warned folk at the Council owned camping ground. He’s said he wished he’d kicked up more. The other, an hour or so prior to the slip, observed slips and waterfalls around the area, took photos and spoke to people there. After leaving the slip came.

Update: As it has transpired today, it’s been revealed that a man phoned 111 at around 6am notifying of slips in the area. He was told to ring the council. This explains the woman who also raised the alarm at the camp ground at 5am. Link to the NZ Herald articles below.
