Aerosol Particle Dispersion as a Method of Obscuration

The purpose of aerosol injection discussed in the following article is to hide aircraft in order to avoid detection by infrared (IR) systems. Aerosol particles such as graphite, [1] Magnesium oxide (MgO), [2] and Silicon dioxide (SiO2) [3][4] are sprayed into the hot exhaust emissions which scatter and absorb IR radiation, so the aircraft can be less visible to IR sensors. According to the authors, continuing work in this area is its application on the supersonic aircrafts.
