Singapore’s first biologically integrated server rack began operating today at the National University of Singapore’s Life Sciences Institute, running on 16 million living human neurons distributed across 20 Cortical Labs CL1 units — making it the first commercial data center deployment in the world to use actual brain cells, not silicon chips designed to mimic them, as its primary computing substrate. The distinction matters: every Nvidia GPU, every neuromorphic chip from Intel or IBM, and every deep learning accelerator in production today uses transistors. The CL1 uses cells that die.
