On the eve of ANZAC Day, we honour those carrying scars from their service in the 2020’s. Staff Sergeant Patrick McCarthy (Ret’d), former Drum Major of the New Zealand Army Band, shares his story — from serving as the public face of the NZ Army on the world stage to the devastating physical toll he endured after rolling up his sleeve for the Covid shot on 12 May 2021: two strokes, neurological damage, chronic pain and crushing fatigue. He details the months it took for him to see his Army doctor, the alleged cover-up within the NZDF and the deep betrayal they felt when the NZDF went to the Supreme Court to “protect themselves against soldiers” so they could continue to mandate NZDF personnel get the shot. Patrick is a third-generation soldier who refuses to stay silent — for his four-year-old son, for his mates and for the warriors and wahine toa of Ngāti Tūmatauenga. Lest We Forget.
