The amount of corn produced in the United States this year is going to be way below expectations.  The Department of Agriculture just slashed its harvest estimates quite dramatically in its June report, but some farmers in the Midwest believe that those reduced projections are still way too optimistic.

As I have previously detailed, millions upon millions of acres will go unplanted this year, but that is only part of the story.  Much of the corn that has actually been planted is coming up very slowly due to the exceedingly poor conditions, and corn farmers all over the Midwest are reporting that their plants look absolutely terrible.  If we get picture perfect weather between now and harvest time, this will simply be a terrible year.  But if severe heat and/or an early frost hits the Midwest, this could very easily be the worst year that we…

A couple of weeks ago, as part of my academic day job, I led a three-hour workshop on the care and treatment of patients with age-related cognitive disorders like Alzheimer’s Disease.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) currently ranks Alzheimer’s as the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. Nearly 100,000 Americans died of the disease in 2014, the most recent year for which we have complete data.

In reality, however, those figures are likely to be a gross underestimate of Alzheimer’s true physical toll. According to a study conducted at Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center in Chicago, the number of deaths that are actually attributable to the disease may be 5 to 6 times higher. Made by the Monsanto Corporation, Roundup is one of the world’s most widely used herbicides. Almost a billion kilograms of it and its chemically-similar relatives are applied annually on crops, gardens, sidewalks and lawns by farmers and homeowners alike.

It is also used by drug enforcement agents globally in the fight against illegal crops like marijuana and coca, and even by some environmental groups for invasive species eradication and habitat restoration. In addition, many of the genetically-modified crops that are grown commercially are specifically engineered to resist Roundup; nine-tenths of the corn, cotton, and soybeans produced in the US are “Roundup Ready” (i.e. herbicide resistant) strains created and patented by Monsanto scientists. Major food companies like General Mills continue to sell popular children’s breakfast cereals and other foods contaminated with troubling levels of glyphosate, the cancer-causing ingredient in the herbicide Roundup. The weedkiller, produced by Bayer-Monsanto, was detected in all 21 oat-based cereal and snack products sampled in a new round of testing commissioned by the Environmental Working Group. All but four products contained levels of glyphosate higher than what EWG scientists consider protective for children’s health with a sufficient margin of safety.

The new tests confirm and amplify EWG’s findings from tests in July and October of last year, with levels of glyphosate consistently above EWG’s children’s health benchmark. The two highest levels of glyphosate were found…

(Bloomberg)— WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange told a London court that his life was “effectively at stake” as he battled being sent to the U.S. to face charges that he endangered national security.

Appearing via videolink from the high-security Belmarsh prison, Assange said observers “should not fall into believing that WikiLeaks is anything but a publisher.” He spoke after a judge at Westminster Magistrates Court ordered that his full five-day hearing should be fixed for Feb. 25 next year.

The court appearance comes after Home Secretary Sajid Javid signed an order that lets an American bid to extradite Assange to formally proceed. Assange, in a gray shirt and wearing glasses, spoke at the end of the hearing to ask for details of the American indictment, which he’s yet to see.

The U.S. has charged Assange with 18 counts related to endangering national security by conspiring to obtain and disclose…

Yesterday I had a conversation with the National Poisons Centre.

Joel Lund of Wanaka had asked a GP what he would do if someone presented with poisoning symptoms after an aerial 1080 poison drop. The doctor replied he would contact the National Poisons Centre. This sounds like a sensible response, one would have thought. Think again!

I had a number of questions for the National Poisons Centre about 1080 poisoning, given that so many people live around 1080 drop zones and are potentially exposed to the substance many times over.

I asked the person who answered the phone there if she was the correct person to be talking to. She said she was.

I explained that we are about to experience another 1080 poison drop in our area (Wanaka) and asked if there were testing kits available here.

The BBC has been accused of “sanitizing the behavior of terrorists” under plans for an effective ban on its journalists using the word ‘terror’ when reporting on terrorist attacks such as the Islamist massacres at London Bridge or Manchester Arena, or the Christchurch mosque terror attack.

BBC reporters will be told to avoid using the word “terror” to describe any terror attack, unless they are quoting someone else who uses the word.

Instead, the reporters will refer to terror attacks by naming specific details, such as the location and the method of slaughter used.

Daily Mail reports: The controversial edict means that the BBC will no longer use the phrase ‘terror attack’ to describe the massacres at London Bridge or Manchester Arena, as the corporation did when the atrocities occurred.
