A Blue Ridge Electric Cooperative spokesman says the Advanced Metering Infrastructure units are accurate and have generated few complaints from the cooperative’s 66,000 customers

Tabitha Riley said her power bills have nearly doubled since Blue Ridge Electric Cooperative installed a smart meter at the mobile home in Dacusville that she shares with her fiance.

Her two most recent monthly bills were $330 and $370, she said. Before the new meter was installed, her bills were between $150 and $200 per month, she said.

“We can barely make the bills,” said Riley, 22, who works as a machinist like her fiance.

Their complaint isn’t the only one. A number of Blue Ridge Electric customers have voiced concern about the technology.
